Elijah doesn't remember much from before he was turned. It's all blurred in a darkness filled with searing pain and an unquenchable thirst. Vague images of his mother and father are present but in the sort of way that a fading memory of a dream is. The trauma from the turning had all but made him a clean slate for the whims and mechanisms of his sire. Turned a little later in life than most, Elijah was turned out of a violent intent and a malicious ulterior motive. Silas, his maker, was turning those who he thought would help grant him power and ranking over others. Elijah's family had some money, and he had a decently respectable standing within society. Even with that, Silas had a knack for recognizing the darkness that lay hidden in others. Dormant. Waiting. Elijah had it in spades, even if it remained relatively unbeknownst to him. Being turned had unleashed everything that had remained chained and caged away deep in the subconscious parts of his mind. It took Silas some years to be able to reign in and refine Elijah, but the man was the perfect sort of protege.
His early vampiric years were filled with violence and excess. Elijah killed at whim, too often. He had yet to learn the art of properly covering his tracks and a layer of subtly that kept hunters off of his back. Any and every fight was an opportunity for him, never turned down and never ignored. Fighting skills that had been decent as a human were honed in as a vampire. The extra strength and speed were something that Elijah relished in when it came to causing as much death and destruction as possible. Little care given to vicitims left behind, killed for the sake of being killed or drained of their blood. He would drink as he saw fit, whether he felt any sense of thirst or not. Wealth was stolen from victims, funding both himself and Silas. Little thought or care went into anything, Elijah purely running on adrenaline, feeding a desire for violence, and sating the thirst that seemed to be a fairly constant companion.
As years faded and times changed, Elijah began to regulate more and understand the occasional need for restraint as well as the benefits of being more selective. Plenty of opportunities presented themselves, and he didn't need to curtail his desire to render human flesh into his own personal playground, but being smarter about it meant less moving around. Being smarter about it also brought a deeper sense of enjoyment. He could savor the panic, the fear that gripped an entire town as people disappeared, and there was seemingly nothing to be done about it. He could take pleasure in watching those that were meant to protect scramble and try to figure out what was the cause of the death and destruction. Staying one step ahead at all times, watching g them flounder and struggle brought a difference deep sense of satisfaction. This also allowed him to remain fairly current in the modern age, both in terms of technology and events. Elijah refused to be one of the old timers who remained centuries behind. If he wanted to maintain his abilities, he had to evolve with the times.
His employment, for the sake of both appearences, hunting, and simply to pass the time, varied throughout the years, but the rotation remained fairly similar. Mechanic, bartender, guard, musician, killer for hire. Always able to reinvent himself and encompass a new identity so suspicions were never raised. His charm allowed a nearly seemingly integration into a new town, among new victims, and into a life that would last a few years before it began all again.
