Your partner came back from the dead after being missing for decades. Every one of their friends who they went with ended up dying a horrible death.
Now, somehow, their entire mental health is based on the continued life and happiness of this fairground goldfish that they picked up.
Neither of you know the first thing about how to care for even a healthy fish. This fish has been poorly cared for, has multiple diseases and the person who handed it over explicitly didn't expect it to live nearly as long as it already has.
You're frantically googling how to set up a fish tank, where to buy fish food, can you even take a fish to the vet? Your partner wants you to know that they're happy they made it home and survived their horrific ordeal, but also that if anything happens to the fish then they're going to kill everyone on this planet and then themself.
You're honestly wondering if you're even helping the fish, or just prolonging its suffering, but your partner will only accept medical help for their many injuries or engage in basic self-care once they're confident that the fish is being looked after.
So you get a tank. You set up a filter and all that stuff. You learn way more than you ever wanted to know about water temperature and ph and nitrate levels. The fish is safe. You start to develop some affection for the little guy. Your partner begins to recover. The fish begins to recover.
Which is when you learn that in its 'healthy' state, the fish regularly refuses to sleep when tired, keeps begging for food that is obviously unhealthy for it (and struggling to eat the food that you do provide because “it tastes gross”), and continually tries to persuade your partner to take it out of its nice safe tank so it can go explore the wonderful world of Outside, where the slightest mishap will kill it instantly.

What Evolution Made Us (Iron Lung x Project Hail Mary) Headcanons
Simon is supremely disoriented when he ends up on the Hail Mary, and to start with he does not want Grace to come anywhere near him.
He is also kind of sick with radiation poisoning + a laundry list of other injuries, and he’s having weird dreams, but he is not missing a limb nor has he been eaten by a fish monster. So, not terrible.
Grace’s first impression of Simon is “how am i going to explain this to the people back on earth”
Simon’s first impression of Grace is “this man talks so much”
Simon’s first impression of Rocky is “OH GOD WHAT THE HELL”
Rocky, for his part, finds all of this hilarious
He is doing the Eridian equivalent of sitting back and watching with a bag of popcorn
Simon is wary when he learns Grace is a teacher purely because he was raised by Eden and the teachers there were… scary
Simon is a quiet type. Grace is not. There is rambling.
When he recovers enough to move around and explore Simon can’t be pulled away from the viewport for like three days. He can’t look away from the stars.
Simon is not a biology type but he is pretty decent at mechanical engineering, which is good news for the mission.
It takes a while for Simon to warm up to Grace, but he does eventually.
One of Grace’s ticks is fiddling with a pen when he’s thinking.
Simon fiddles with the hems of his sleeves. He also tends to want to wear wrist wraps because otherwise he feels exposed.
When Rocky and Grace find out about the alien thing living in the literal ocean of human blood they both freak out. A lot.
Grace is now hellbent on getting his hands on a sample of the blood ocean.
Hey, it might be good for the mission! What if there’s another way of getting rid of the astrophage?
They’re still on a deadline, but Grace is wondering if there’s a way to figure out what happened to the Shadow area of stars. (More details to come in worldbuilding notes!)
Simon and Grace can both sew but Simon is better at it.
Simon gives Rocky a little pouch for his belt made out of scraps once they actually end up being friends.
Rocky recruits Simon to the Wrangle Grace mission so now there are two people who insist that he gets sleep.
It’s probably a good thing that they picked Simon up because after they work through their collective issues he’s able to provide the one thing Rocky can’t: physical touch. Which is a necessary thing for humans to have to stay sane and in one piece.
Grace is aroace, Simon is some flavor of bi, it's whatever. Platonic relationships for the win here, they all form a weird little friend group.
The food supplies are a bit stretched, but they manage well enough.
Grace’s memory comes back in bits and pieces and he is understandably upset about it.
