For the past several weeks, I've just been refining a script for my moth and butterfly short film idea (titled "The Butterfly Soldier"). You're able to keep up with my sketch concepts for these guys in the meantime on my other blog or doodle insta account.

It's worth noting that a lot of the interactions they have in these doodles are not necessarily part of the short film, they're more for me to get a feel for the characters' personalities and designs.

Story context:

"The Butterfly Soldier" was originally a placeholder but it'll most likely stick as the title (it gets to the point)

It is set in a world where other woodland winged insects with similar predators are banded together under the Queen Bee’s rule for protection, in exchange for serving her hive.

Most notably are the historically beloved "butterfly soldiers". Taking caterpillars from their host plant and training them to be fiercely loyal soldiers was their way of saving them from being bottom of the food chain, while also preserving their beauty. It’s tradition that at least one butterfly is a high rank officer.

Most I’ll say is that Thistle and Brambelle have grown apart due to a lot of factors, particularly their differing loyalties towards the hive they were raised in. Most notably, Thistle has done unsavory things to secure his position as a lieutenant.

They didn’t expect Brambelle to be a nocturnal moth so that’s why she ended up with a different job more suited for her.

Media that would match the tone of their universe: Watership Down, Ringing Bell, Warrior Cats, The Last Unicorn

I reviewed just about every animated bug property that exists and the closest to match their tone would be Antz. (Also wow there’s a lot less mainstream bug character media out there than I thought)

Minor update: "General Thistle" is now called "Lieutenant Thistle" since he is relatively young. plus he thinks it sounds cooler anyways. i asked him

More practical info:

The moth and butterfly story are conceptualized as an animated short film. Not sure if it’ll come into fruition since I’m not particularly experienced with this sort of thing (gotta start small). If I had to guess it would probably span about half an hour.

The short is mostly from Thistle's perspective (he’s the butterfly soldier 🤯, no way) but if the story were to continue, it would have more of Brambelle’s perspective.

All the main story beats, particularly the beginning and ending, have been figured out since last April and I'm mostly coming up with stuff that happens in the middle. I'd say I'm about over halfway there.

I’ve told exactly 6 friends the full beginning to end of this story and they’ve all had a similar reaction.

So... I think that’s a good sign.

I'm planning to draw these guys more so people can get to know them; there's handful of cool characters I haven't shown yet.

I'm also hoping to make references for them at some point (especially for ArtFight). There hasn't been much polished art from me because I've been mostly trying to figure out character designs as well as the script. I've accumulated at least 8 pages of me just tryna figure out Thistle's knight armor oh my god. (He still keeps his other outfits but the armor will be his main look) (him having extra arms is NOT HELPING!!!)

I honestly wish JoeDoughBoi actually used the fact Kylie is trans for the horror involving her character. I know its really early on in the story and all, but so far the most done with her character is the same song and dance as every other vessel with just the laziest trans based body horror thrown in. (I'm trans fyi) What if everything Lord X said in Beauty to lure her in was a lie? Like he gets her on board, makes her feel all nice n good, and then puts her in a male vessel. Being trans and the fear of not fitting in your body even as you undergo/have undergone HRT and the knowledge that achieving a body that matches with your brain's gender is something that never ends like most forms of self-improvement is a fear I assure you a majority of transgender people feel, and iirc Kylie's already undergone a transition (at least from art of her as a human I've seen that i think JDB drew) so imagine the terror and depression she'd feel if she basically ended up back at square one! Because really, why does Lord X put her in a gender affirming body? Its not even really a 'careful what you wish for' thing because he was always going to put her in his torment game regardless of her vessel's gender, have him be a twisted asshole who makes her feel dumb for thinking she could trust him. But I guess that would be an actual interesting form of horror that would make sense for the characters involved, make Kylie actually likeable and sympathetic, and make Lord X feel uniquely evil.

starting this off with a reminder that Sinister Minds is a fan made album and is not canon to Lord X, the song Beauty depicts a canon interaction in a non-canon way. We have not actually seen this interaction in canon yet.

Making Lord X put Kylie in a non gender affirming body goes against his entire character and shows a complete lack of understanding of his character in general. Lord X is fascinated by humans and everything about them, he would of course be fascinated by the fact Kylie is trans and would want her in a gender affirming vessel to see what that could do in his world.

Making Lord X straight up transphobic isn't 'uniquely evil' its the most obvious thing you could do to make him evil and its bland, boring, and creatively lacking. Lord X giving Kylie a vessel that affirms her gender yet still makes her dysphoric is so immensely interesting and is horrifying in its own right in a way that isn't expected, but is still rather unique to the trans experience.

Kylie's journey of self identity is set back to zero because her new vessel makes her dysphoric. I'm pretty sure its one of the reasons why she does not wear the clothes her vessel came with and instead wears the clothes she looted from a dead body. She is a trans person in a foreign world in a body that will probably never feel like her own and she has no real way to change it outside of changing the clothes she has. As a fellow trans person, this is a very scary and uosetting concept and definitely uses Kylie being trans as a vessel for horror.

The lack of understanding of these two characters in this confession is so upsetting to me, they're both so cool and well written imo and this just misses all of it.
