Livor mortis (livor meaning “bluish color” & mortis “of death”), postmortem lividity, hypostasis or suggillation, is one of the signs of death. Livor mortis is a settling of the blood in the lower portion (in most cases) of the body. This causes a purplish red discoloration of the skin. When the heart stops functioning & is no longer agitating the blood, heavy red blood cells sink through the serum (the clear stuff we know as plasma) by action of gravity.

Livor mortis starts 20 minutes to 3 hrs after death & is congealed in the capillaries in 4 - 5 hrs. Maximum lividity occurs within 6 - 12 hrs. The blood pools into the interstitial tissues (the spaces between the cells) of the body. The intensity of the color depends upon the amount of reduced hemoglobin in the blood.

The discoloration does not occur in the area/s of the body that are in contact with the ground/another object in which capillaries are compressed (a simple example of this is to press firmly down on the tip of your finger for a few seconds and the skin will be white/pale for a few seconds, this is because you’ve temporarily slowed down the blood flow into the tissue you have put pressure on). As the vessel walls become permeable due to decomposition, blood leaks through them & stains the tissue.
