Hello! I'm HOH and wanting to learn how to sign! My only issue is that in my area, there are little to no ASL classes offered outside of colleges, and one would need to enroll in the school itself instead of just signing up for the program. I'm based in Vancouver, Canada, and I'm wondering if anyone (followers, mods, etc.) Know of any programs that teach ASL at like a rec center or something... Thanks a bunch!

hi, i have autditory processing disorder, is that included as HoH? (self-dx, if that makes any difference). thank you!

I’m not sure I can answer that properly.  Technically no because being deaf or hoh means having some degree of hearing loss.  APD is more about processing the sounds you hear soo... of course you can be part of the community, but I’m not sure what label if any is right fit.  Again, I can’t answer that properly because I don’t have APD and I am not educated much in that either. 

Maybe other people can add comment on this for you to see different perspectives.

I learned a couple months ago I have hearing loss and I constantly have to ask people to speak louder and repeat, the whole shebang. Can I tell people I'm hard of hearing, or is there a certain point where hearing loss goes to hard of hearing ?

No, there is no certain level of hearing loss to label yourself hard of hearing.  If you feel that fits your identity, then go for it.

Yeah I got so overwhelmed when I was younger.  I denied my Deaf identity growing up and refused to accept my queer feelings and thoughts as well.  Eventually, I realized it is the society that made me feel so uncomfortable and bad about myself.  Over the years, I learned to love myself just the way I am and embrace my uniqueness.  Now, I love being Deaf and queer!

It’s okay to feel whatever you feel at the moment.  Find a channel to vent your feelings and thoughts.  Just remember you’re amazing just the way you are! lmL

Yeah, you can call yourself hard of hearing or whatever you feel is a right fit.

Is it inappropriate for a hearing person to suggest signs for previously sign-less terms to the d/Deaf community? Especially for queer signs, of which there are woefully few

Yes that is inappropriate.  You can discuss with Deaf people you know, but let them lead the decision-making process on coming up with new sign for certain concepts/meanings. 

Not only that, but Deaf trans should be the ones to lead the discussion on trans related signs, Deaf aces for asexuality... you get the idea here.

Because of the ask I received recently.  I know I haven’t been active lately. Sorry about that! I will try to post more if people are still interested. It’s difficult sometimes when there’s not much stuff to post and I don’t receive asks/messages.
