When an iconic native animal is overabundant: The koala in southern Australia. . Congratulations to Dr Desley Whisson and PhD student Kita Ashman on their amazing review paper on the overabundance of koalas. Telling the girls from the boys. . Establishing the sex of powerful owls in the field just became a bit easier. After measuring and looking at hundreds of images, our Deakin Enviro team have managed to work out how to sex owls from photos. This saves us having to genetically test birds to work out what sex they are and allows #citizenscientists to be involved in monitoring. Check out the paper here (it is open access to anyone) 👇🏼 https://ift.tt/3cTJZpV #birds #birdphotography #owls #HarryPotter #wildlife #deakinenviro #predators #birdsofprey https://ift.tt/2TVGlU4
More amazing work from our @bluecarbonlab 👍 ・・・ The value of Australia’s coastal wetlands gets featured in ECO magazine. #MappingOceanWealth reveals VIC wetlands contribute >$562 million in tangible goods to the community via food produce, shoreline protection, recreation & #BlueCarbon storage. https://ift.tt/2W6lFew
As devastating as our fires have been over the summer, it is important to be positive. Our plants and animals are very resilient to fire. With good rains and time, our ecosystems will recover. https://ift.tt/2TD8Yq6
This gecko came to an untimely end at the “hands” of one of Borneo’s gliding snakes. https://ift.tt/2Q1R2TN
Great stuff @watch.wildlife 👍👍👍👍 ・・・ This is a eastern pygmy possum (Cercartetus nanus) from the forests of the Great Otway National Park. I am studying these, and other small mammals as part of my PhD, where I'm trialling a method of protecting small mammals from predation (by feral cats and foxes) in forest that's been burnt (link in bio). This particular pygmy possum was a male that tipped the scales at just 20 grams, meaning that I only need 3,249 more to build a life-sized pygmy possum replica of the high calibre scientist @eco_tdo. The hardest part is getting them to stay still. #phd #phdlife #wildlife #greatotwaynationalpark #pygmypossum #possum #australianwildlife #nature #naturephotography #australia #wildlifeonearth #wildlifeconservation #abcsouthwest @deakinenviro @ecolsocaus @kita.ashman https://ift.tt/3892rYd
I think seeing a thorny devil is probably on the bucket lists of most Aussies. Great shot from @nvolpe.wild 👏👏 ・・・ Thorny Devil (Moloch horridus) One of Australia's most iconic reptiles, the spike-covered Thorny Devil lives in the hot arid interior of the country. These lizards jerk as they move along the sand dunes, feeding on thousands of ants per day. Thorny Devils are so specialised for life in the desert, that they can lay in any dew they come across and absorb water through capillary action to their mouth via grooves in their scales! . . . #ausgeo #canonaus #deakinenviro #nature #macro #northernterritory #wild https://ift.tt/2VwKcZY
Fabulous shot and info as we always get from @lucynak.wild 👍 ・・・ Bringing things back closer to home with a Pygmy Mulga (Pseudechis weigeli), also known as a Pygmy King Brown. A dangerously venomous snake, the species is a member of the black snake genus and is endemic to the Kimberley ranges and the NT. Gorgeously marked with three fierce blood red lines down its neck, it is an incredible sight (especially if you were as excited as me to see it!) 🐍 . . . #wildlifephotography #wildlife #snakes #reptile #northernterritory #conservation #wildlifeconservation #macrophotography #macro #canonaus #animals #venom #snake #reptiles #photography #deakinenviro #ausgeo #australia #cuinthent #ntaustralia https://ift.tt/2wbGpXp
