The faint fussing of a newborn echoed down the hall and Dean heard Alissa groan beside him, since she’d only just fallen asleep. “I got it,” he whispered and kissed the side of her head before climbing out of bed. She mumbled something that sounded like “I love you” and he smiled and quietly padded to the next room over and peered into the nursery. Walking over to one of the cribs, he rubbed at his eyes tiredly and looked at the small squirming newborn with her face scrunched up. “What’s going on, Claire Bear?” he whispered as he carefully picked her up and rested her against his shoulder. He sat in the nearby rocking chair and lightly pivoted his foot at a slow and even speed.

They had settled into a routine at home but Dean was still awestruck by the small squirming bundles that were so small and dependent on him and their mother. He remembered when she had told him she was pregnant and he nearly fainted out of shock. At first he was overwhelmed; stressed, even. He didn’t have the first clue about taking care of children. Sure, his cousin had kids and he was close to them but, that was different than raising your own children.

The rhythmic rocking soon soothed the newborn back to sleep but in the process, also put Dean to sleep. Alissa noticed he hadn’t come back after quite a while and quietly walked out into the hall and poked her head in. She chuckled quietly as she saw him asleep in the chair with his head lulled back and his mouth open with Claire nuzzled against him. The sun started to shine it’s first few spurts of light through the drapes and casted a beam across his face. She stood in the doorway and watched them for a moment before finally turning to go back down the hall and attempt to get a few more minutes of sleep.
