Dean Winchester doesn’t answer to anybody about anything. Not about his ever changing hair color or tattoos, not his music, and definitely not about all the fucks he definitely doesn’t give. Of course, then he meets pretentious, skinny jean wearing, ugly sweater buying Castiel Edlund who’s hardest lot in life is probably alphabetizing inventory at his uncle’s record store, and suddenly Dean has to answer for everything.
Castiel, on the other hand, had long since accepted his fate as an anti-social, directionless, and misunderstood soul, with his cat, Meg, and a bottle of whiskey being the only company he needed. But then fate threw him Dean, the abrasive, infuriating punk who wears guyliner, and walks around like the chip on his shoulder is something to be proud of, and Castiel’s carefully constructed life was turned ass over teakettle.
After a heated exchange upon first meeting, a mutual loathing afterwards, and the glaring opposites in their lives, neither of them sees the point of mixing oil and water. Which would be all good and well, except neither of them seems to be able to stay away from the other.
Enemies to lovers is my own personal catnip, so of course I was quick to click on this fic. There's a lot of misunderstandings in this fic between Dean and Cas, and the first occurs at their first meeting, where they both make some hasty assumptions about the other. But they keep getting thrown together through social situations, at first accidentally and then... less accidentally. Basically, even though Dean and Cas can't stand each other (initially) they're also a little obsessed with each other, and they end up inventing increasingly transparent reasons to see each other. And once they end up sleeping together, it's even worse!
Rest assured, however, for those of you who like a softer version of our boys--Dean and Cas aren't at each other's throats for long. As they spend more time with each other, they both acknowledge each other's good points, and before too long, they're head over heels for each other. Except Cas has a tragedy in his past that prevents him from getting close to anyone, and Dean is too scared of losing Cas to push for what he really wants.
I love how these two heal each other throughout this fic. Even though they bring out each other's worst sides, they also bring out the best in each other as well. It's really true--there's no one in the world that understands Cas as well as Dean, and there's no one in the world that understands Dean as well as Cas. Even when they're bickering and insulting each other, these two just connect on a level that's impossible for other people to comprehend.
