A Letter to Extraterrestrials
You're reading this letter because you find us interesting beings :) I want to
ask so many things - how much of the Universe has been explored, when did
contact between planets begin, how do your ethics guide your technology, how
are we alike and different from other industrialized species, is there life based on
genetic codes different from our own, what are your spiritual beliefs, and so much
It is understandable that you haven't contacted us yet. History shows that
encounters between groups of widely different abilities have destructive results.
The ways we often picture you - grotesque, uncaring, immoral - is a reflection of
our lesser selves. It is what many of us would become if we were in your position.
It is difficult for us to rise above the prejudices of our time because we persecute
those who think differently not for being wrong, but for being right. We are capable
of both wonderful and horrible acts, our history being the struggle to overcome this
contradiction. We don't learn when others do things for us. We learn only by
correcting our own mistakes, by getting ourselves out of the messes that we get
ourselves into. We wish to know you exist so that we know we are not alone, that
we can be more than what we are.
When you contact us, please talk not just to those in power, but to children,
housewives, the elderly, the sick and the dying, drug addicts, prostitutes, the
lonely, the hurting, the outcast. They all have just as much to tell you about
ourselves. Please spend time communicating with the non-human species here
too. It is what we should also be doing, as they have much to say in their own
ways. They will tell you things about us that we ourselves are blind to.
I want very much to know that we are more alike than different. When you
contact us, let it be because we're making meaningful contributions to the Universe.
