Standing with Palestine: How Hashtag Publics and Digital Activism are Shaping Support in Malaysia🇵🇸🤲🏻
WEEK 6 - Hashtag Publics, Political Engagement and Activism
Malaysia's Support for Palestine through #Hashtag Publics 📱
Hey there, my fellow advocates ✨
I am back again with another blog here 🩷
In today's blog, I'm switching things up a bit.
If you're someone passionate about advocacy and supporting important causes, then you're in the right place!
I'll be delving into Malaysia's solidarity with Palestine, a topic that's both politically important and deeply heartfelt.
In Malaysia, hashtag publics like #MalaysiaStandsWithPalestine have become digital town squares, where discussions, debates, and calls to action unfold in real-time. They provide a platform for anyone to voice their opinions, share personal stories, and connect with like-minded advocates. Through these digital spaces, ordinary citizens become agents of change, contributing to a larger movement for justice and peace.
As a Malaysian myself, I feel a strong connection to this issue and want to shed light on how our local influencers are also stepping up to support and raise awareness about the situation in Palestine, particularly Gaza.
So for today, we will be talking about the topic that has sparked passionate discussions and calls for action across Malaysia and beyond standing in solidarity with Palestine. As news of the ongoing atrocities in Gaza and the plight of Palestinians continues to dominate headlines, it's more important than ever to explore how digital communities and influencers are leveraging hashtag publics and digital activism to support this cause.
MERCY MALAYSIA POSTER BEING POSTED ON ALL SOCIAL MEDIA
[Humanitarian Urgency: Mercy Malaysia's Response to Gaza Crisis and Digital Activism's Impact on Supporting Palestine]
In times of crisis, the world looks to organizations like Mercy Malaysia to provide swift and effective humanitarian aid. The ongoing Gaza Crisis is no exception, and Mercy Malaysia has stepped up to the plate with a rapid response that underscores their commitment to alleviating suffering and promoting peace.
As the conflict in Gaza unfolds, Mercy Malaysia has been on high alert, closely monitoring the situation and assessing the urgent needs on the ground. Through their social media channels and website, they've kept the public informed about the severity of the crisis, citing reports from reputable sources like Al-Jazeera that highlight the escalating violence and devastating impact on civilians.
The numbers speak volumes: at least 198 Palestinians and 40 Israelis have lost their lives, with many more injured (Times 2023). The toll on innocent lives continues to rise, painting a grim picture of the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza.
Mercy Malaysia understands the gravity of the situation and is actively exploring all possibilities to extend aid in the form of health assistance, psychosocial support, and essential medical supplies.
But Mercy Malaysia's response doesn't stop there. They're also leveraging the power of digital activism to mobilize support and raise awareness about the plight of Palestinians. Through strategic use of hashtags like #FreePalestine and #EndIsraeliApartheid, they're amplifying their message and engaging with a global audience that shares their passion for justice and peace.
AMEERA KHAN SUPPORTING PALESTINE THROUGH INSTAGRAM
[Malaysian Influencers Speak Out: Support for Palestine]
As the Israeli-Palestinian conflict escalates, it's disheartening to see many Malaysian celebrities staying silent, not using their social media influence to raise awareness.
However, some brave influencers have stepped up, using their platforms and hashtags to show support and engage in activism.
Hashtags like #FreePalestine, #StopIsraeliApartheid, and #SaveGaza have become powerful tools for raising awareness, mobilizing support, and amplifying voices that demand justice.
First up is Ameera Khan, a well-known Instagram influencer often in the spotlight. This time, she’s being praised for her courage in openly supporting Palestine. Her Instagram is filled with stories and posts about the situation in Palestine, earning her admiration from netizens for speaking out when many others remain silent.
YUNA ONLY WORKS WITH FASHION DESIGNERS SUPPROTS PALESTINIANS
Another notable figure is singer Yuna (Yunalis Mat Zarai), who is using her influence in the fashion world to make a stand.
Yuna has publicly stated that she will only work with fashion designers who show solidarity with Palestine. She took to Instagram to explain her decision, making it clear she doesn't support Zionist cruelty. This came to light when a recent magazine shoot featuring her caused a stir online, due to a misunderstanding about her turban style. Despite the controversy, Yuna's firm stance against working with Zionist-supporting designers has garnered significant support from her followers (Muiz 2023).
These actions by Ameera Khan and Yuna highlight the power of hashtag publics and digital activism. By using their platforms to speak out, they not only raise awareness but also inspire others to join the cause. It's a reminder of how influential social media can be in advocating for justice and supporting important global issues.
HARITH ISKANDER INSTAGRAM POST
Harith Iskander has used his social media platforms to highlight the situation in Palestine, encouraging his followers to learn more, donate to relief efforts, and join online campaigns.
His influence goes beyond just posting as he inspires real change and motivates others to get involved in the fight for justice.
Palestinian Cultural Organisation Malaysia (PCOM) Chairman Muslim Imran said Malaysia's virtual war against the Zionist regime, using the hashtag #IsraelKoyak among others, has proved to be influential and effective. - NSTP/MOHD KHAIRUL HELMY MOHD DIN
According to the New Straits Times, Muslim Imran, Chairman of the Palestinian Cultural Organisation Malaysia (PCOM), praised Malaysia’s virtual campaign against the Zionist regime, particularly through hashtags like #IsraelKoyak. He emphasized that Malaysia’s political, diplomatic, financial, and cyber support has been crucial and effective, urging everyone to continue their efforts (Yunus 2021).
However, this support has also led to some Malaysians expressing anti-Semitic views, sparking controversy.
The popular comedian Harith Iskandar recently addressed this issue, stressing that the Palestine-Israel conflict is not a “Jew vs. Muslim” issue but a humanitarian crisis. In a five-minute video, he condemned the actions of the Zionist forces and the Israeli government, describing them as “borderline inhumane.” Harith emphasized the real and devastating impact of the conflict, calling for an end to the violence (Karissalund 2021).

He also pointed out that boycotting is not enough to help Palestinians. Boycotts often resurface only when news from Palestine becomes particularly devastating and tends to harm Malaysian businesses and employees.
Harith highlighted a significant problem: when tensions rise, anti-Jewish sentiments often emerge, turning the issue into a “war on Islam.” He clarified that while most Palestinians are Muslim and need support, there are also Palestinian Christians and Jews who are suffering. Harith’s main point was that this conflict is not a Muslim issue but a humanitarian one. It’s not about religion; it’s about land, politics, power, and money. It’s about one group using political intimidation, bullying, and war to push out another group.
Harith urged Malaysians to focus their anger not on random Jewish individuals or Jewish-owned brands but on the Zionists and their powerful political allies responsible for the violence. He stressed that recognizing the conflict as an atrocity against human beings would help rally like-minded, influential nations to put pressure on the Zionist government to stop the killing.
As for my own opinion, I completely agree with Harith Iskandar's approach to supporting Palestine through activism and social media.
His use of Instagram posts and hashtags is crucial in raising awareness and advocating for humanitarian issues. This approach helps shift the narrative from one of religious conflict to one of human rights, encouraging more comprehensive and effective activism.
Hashtags like #FreePalestine and #IsraelKoyak help gather support and educate people, giving a voice to those who need it most. This collective action can make a real difference.
MALAYSIAN CITIZEN RAISING AWARENESS SUPPORT PALESTINE
As I wrap up this blog, it's clear that Malaysia's support for Palestine is both inspiring and impactful. Through the power of hashtags and digital activism, we've seen how collective voices can amplify important humanitarian issues.
Harith Iskandar's approach and the efforts of many others show that social media is more than just a platform for sharing—it's a tool for real change.
By continuing to use hashtags like #FreePalestine and #IsraelKoyak, we can keep raising awareness, educating others, and standing in solidarity with those who need it most.
So let's continue to use our voices, both online and offline, to stand with Palestine, amplify marginalized voices, and work towards a world where peace and justice prevail. Together, we can make a difference.
