Song of the moment. #obsessed
I just replaced all of our bedding and it seriously feels like a fancy hotel in here. All white might have been a bold move with two dogs who love sleeping on our bed, but oh well! Just might have to add bleach to my laundry regimen.
2017 goals
Throughout my twenties I was pretty freaking on point... I worked like crazy, I was constantly training for a marathon or half-marathon, did hot yoga in my down time, and was obsessed with juice cleaning and vegan stints. Â I was also single and surrounded by girlfriends with the same interests as me which made it super easy to stay motivated.
Life has changed a lot since then.  My job is less stressful but more demanding, I’m in a serious relationship and have more responsibilities outside of work.  But I’m also in the worst shape I’ve been in since my first year out of college and am really dissatisfied with my body (both what it looks like and how it feels... I’m tired a lot and am not happy with my overall level of fitness).
I’ve always been a little obsessed with simplifying my life as much as possible- whittling down my belongings, spending my time on what’s most important, and saving money/only spending it on what matters. Â
So I was thinking about all of this when setting goals for the year, and I think I came up with three good ones.  What I like best is they overlap and interact with each other and are a little more complex than “do this” or “don’t do that”. Â
1) Rock the 2017 Chicago Marathon
I’ll be running my third marathon on October 8th and want to train all out and hit a PR (sub 4.45).  I have a pretty specific week by week program that takes me right up to the marathon in three phases- the first is focuses on strength training and diet to get back in shape and shed some extra pounds; the second is a pre-training running plan to rebuild my endurance; and the third is the actual 18 week marathon training plan to build mileage.  There are a few weeks of all yoga speckled throughout to keep up mobility and keep it fun. Â
I’m hoping this goal will get me back in shape, get me back to a happy weight to maintain, and help me rebuild some of the discipline I was so good at in my twenties.Â
2) Save as much money as possible
My BF and I bought a condo which depleted a lot of my savings so this is my year to focus on building it back up (just so we can spend it on renovations on the aforementioned condo... jk!). Â Not going to share my specific goals here but I want both my savings and my retirement accounts in much better places by the end of the year.
The two main ways I’m planning to free up some additional money to save is through putting a freeze on buying clothes this year (eek!!) and spending way less money eating out.  My deal with clothes is that I can only buy to replace something that is a current staple that is no longer wearable (i.e. running shoes, or my black skinny jeans).  Eating out is just a general focus right now, but I’ll put more parameters on it if I’m not making progress. Â
I’m hoping this goal will allow me to head into 2018 feeling good about being a homeowner and having a nice little safety net built beneath me. Â
3) Spend my time on things I really love
All that running and working out will help with this!  I’m also working on spending more time on the hobbies I’ve always loved- reading and playing piano.  I have a stack of books to read on my commute and just got some piano music in the mail I’m excited about.  I’m also not being snobby about this.. I’m focusing on finding TV shows I really like to veg out watching when I need a break and want to start baking some of my favorite treats to share with coworkers and friends. Â
This goal is all about being as happy as possible through the little things (and is honestly the one I’m most excited about!).
So there you go!  Three big and fun goals for the year.  While I’m not going to give the play by play of my progress I’ll probably reflect on how it’s going from time to time.
hello, little blog!
It’s been awhile, Tumblr!  I dabbled with privately hosted yoga blog for awhile, then focused solely  on FB and instagram, but have been missing the tumblr community and decided to give this space a go again.
The plan is to largely use this as a space to reflect on what I have going on... some big goals for the year, a new home to decorate, a career to reflect on... and probably some rants about the state of our national politics from time to time. :)
No guarantees it will be particularly deep or exciting.. but I’m going to make a point of at least showing up regularly. Â
I just got back from spending a lovely, quiet weekend in my hometown with one of my best friends. We spent a lot of time outdoors, a lot of time with my parents, and a lot of time talking about life. She’s one of those friends I can be completely unfiltered with- part of it’s …
New post on my yoga website. Â

sick little workout
So Kelly Ripa does this exercise, where you like, draw each letter of the alphabet using your body (squat, lunge, reach & stretch to trace the outline and create over-sized ABC’s in the air).  She apparently uses a light weight, but I didn’t have one handy.
26 letters.  It takes just a minute or two. No bid deal, right? Um, Just try it.  (I mean now…seriously, stand up and whip through your letters.) I can barely lift my arms today.  #GoodHurt!

Big news in my world this week... I have pink hair!
I’m pretty much having my best day ever.
A relaxing yoga nidra class this morning to kick off our last ayurveda training weekend, rocked my final presentation (and mostly rocked my final exam last night), a wonderful (wonderful!) picnic catered by Karyn’s Raw at Adler Planetarium complete with cartwheels in the grass and feet in the sand, a leisurely three mile walk along the lake shore, and plans for a home-cooked dinner (bbq chicken... yum!), rooftop drink, and a movie with my favorite person and partner in crime...  my legs are tired, my cheeks are a little pink, and I am so, so, so content.
Can I please do this every Friday?!?Â
On Instagram, Madison Holleran's life looked ideal: Star athlete, bright student, beloved friend. But the photos hid the reality of someone struggling to go on.
I read this article earlier this weekend and haven’t been able to stop thinking about this young woman, or the partially unhealthy role social media plays in my own life, since.  While it seems there was much more causing her depression than just instagram it makes you realize how much we believe and take in the uber-cultivated and glossy worlds we create for others (and ourselves) on social media.  I still think things like pinterest, facebook and instagram bring more creativity, connection and happiness to my life than they do depression, jealously or self doubt but it’s worth taking a step back.
I think I’m going to take a little social media breather.  I have a big test for my ayurveda training this week and have wanted to realign my priorities and decrease some stress in my life so this seems like a healthy choice.  I highly doubt it will be for long but when I come back I want to do it with a commitment to show my life, thoughts and feelings with as little gloss as possible- we all need as many examples of humanity and reality as we can get.
Love this guy.

YOU GUYS... my sister indulged my desire to have a yoga photo shoot while we were in Florida and look how awesome the pictures turned out!  I always feel a little self-indulgent posting a bunch of pictures of myself but I’m enjoying these too much not to share.  My website and yoga bios are going to be rocking thanks to these!!
Just one… I’ve been at this for years, and still, this is the mantra that I utter when I feel too busy or too tired or too whatever to come to my mat. Just one sun salute. Just one cat/cow. Just one restorative pose. Just one minute of breathing. Pick one. Any one. It doesn’t matter. It could just as easily go the other way - just one email, just one small to do that’s been nagging, just one minute on Facebook…. And I know where that goes. Just one grows, however I choose to spend my time. Just one can be permission, or an excuse, and I’m consciously choosing permission - this morning after a long weekend + late night at school, with a full day ahead, I stepped onto my mat for just one slow, sweet salute. Just a few minutes of sitting and breathing. So grateful to the me of this morning, for this tiny slip of permission, presence and remembrance to begin my day.
beautiful message
Kelly, I feel like you would like this.Â
My sister was right... I DO love this!
My big sister tagged me for 20 beautiful women and I believe I’m supposed to post a picture(s) of myself that I love.
I personally spend WAY too much time focusing on why I DON’T love pictures of myself so here are three that I love and that really capture the happiness and joy of the moment when they were taken.  I also love these pictures because I’m a little bit of a mess in all three (one was taken at a BBQ after a long day at work, one with my little sister after completing the Chicago marathon, and one with my mini-me Kate where I’m wearing no make up after a long day hiking with my family in Vermont!) which, let’s be real, it’s my most regular state of being. :)
I’m not going to tag anyone in particular but would love to see as many of my followers as possible post pictures of themselves that they love!
