@dearzauberberg
hey so… what the hell 🔥
Me too, Hans.
if you want to read a cozy, cottagecore, quiet book about a little witch looking for her neighbor’s cat in the swiss alps, i have just the right thing for you! so, it’s called the magic mountain by thomas mann,
Got the new Simon Pare translation of The Magic Mountain!!
It has notes at the end about things that Thomas Mann references.
It keeps the French dialogue in the book in French.
ITS SO FUCKING GOOD SO FAR.
I will update everyone on the Frau Stohr-isms that it uses for her way of talking, and on if the humour is any good. I haven't started reading it properly yet cause.. sigh. I need to finish Dr Faustus.
BUT I GLANCED THROUGH AND ITS SOOO GOODD, and its so pretty too. Its so nice to hold. I AM SO FUCKING EXCITED YOU DONT UNDERSTAND.
Alsooo I might write a vampire!Joachim fanfic once I start reading it... Imma reread my ghost!Joachim stuff and see if I wanna continue that, tho, cause I dont wanna abandon it at the second chapter
I finished that Der Zauberberg sketch, so it's going on my art acct! Cause I really like this..
FINISHED ITTT
Another Joachim, this time in the mirror! He's starting to looo more and more like a headcanon LMAOO
ALSO I bought the new Simon Pare translation, and CANT WAIT to start reading it after I finish Doktor Faustus!!!
Joachim Ziemssen .. has tear ducts?
One of my favourite things to do is embarrass Joachim Ziemssen.
Here he is with a small mark on his middle finger from a ring he tried on during a visit in town. He tried it on while giving a performative little huff of a laugh and glancing around to make sure no one saw, but it got stuck, and in his rush to remove it, left a mark.
In the second image, he's binding. Trans Joachim, anyone?!
He is a creature that hates vulnerability to the depths of his soul (soldiers shouldn't have these kinds of moments, nor should older brother figures). Here's Thomas Mann agreeing with me on embarrassing him:
If anyone has any fic ideas that touch on this topic, PLEASEEE GIVE THEM OVER (or write them 👀)!!
I like drawing Joachim Ziemssen with eyelashes. It goes against his nature and reveals something about himself that he wouldn't want visible. But he can't just cut them off
I'm sorry for always making Hans a cutiepie. But I think Thomas Mann would agree
This is partially inspired by my fanfic where Joachim is a ghost haunting Hans, but also. I just love making them pose together. They are such an odd duo. I LOVE YOU JOACHIM ZIEMSSEN
I cannot wait for the new translation to end up in my hands. I really wanna reread the book, and this is perfect timing
Blue print of Hans Castorp.
the basic reading of Doktor Faustus, or at least the reading that the narrating voice of Serenus Zeitblom wants us to adopt, is that the titular character of Faustus is embodied in Adrian Leverkühn, the composer protagonist who enters a pact with the devil so that he may compose masterpieces; and that this pact with the devil is mirrored by Germany's descent into nazism.
however, even without counting what Adrian expresses in terms of his beliefs (it's not nazism), or what obvious sympathisers of nazism have to say about Adrian's music (not compliments), there's also to consider that Adrian's last creative years are 1929 and 1930, the very final years of the Republic of Weimar, in effect the more or less last "spiritually free" years of the entire country; and Serenus narrates these final years during the end of WW2, in 1945. so that Adrian's death corresponds in the two timelines to both the spiritual and the physical/political death of Germany. only one of these two friends survives the rise of the dictatorship, only one has sons who joined the nazi party, only one was part of intellectual circles where the ideology was exalted and discussed and where he never spoke up against it, only one has the privilege of talking about "our" downfall, as an admission of guilt, while at the same time a renunciation and a distancing from what he denounces, as though he was never really part of it. and that's not Adrian, but Serenus. Adrian is the part of Germany that didn't even get to see the war but lived through the malady that led to it, and his deeply jealous friend who's repressedly in love with him projects on dead Adrian a part that, in truth, he played way more straight himself.
Serenus the philology professor is after all the other, undeclared, subtler and more mediocre, Faust of the story.
thomas mann voice what if doctor faustus was 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝓪𝓴𝔂 and to seal the deal with the devil he had to bounce on it crazy style and get syphilis
Serenus Zeitblom confirmed as Little German Boy, film at 11
At the beginning of the chapter in which this exchange appears, Serenus emphatically states in the narration that he was not present for the events described therein BUT that does not matter because his emotional entanglement is so strong that he was BASICALLY there. Yeah, whatever, Serenus, you are making shit up again. I don't think it's completely out of character that Adrian might refer to him as "my Serenus" once (not to his face ofc) but not this much.
(The most pringles-can-worthy thing about this chapter is that Serenus' imaginary version of Adrian is weirdly obsessed with what is and is not going to be in his biography, because this book is not even a little bit subtle about the unreliability of its narrative voice)
naah we got doktor faustus fanart before gta6
