This Burr Oak (Quercus macrocarpa) on Business 30 in Downingtown, Pa had a twin who was lost a few years ago. This one has been struck by lightning. That split down the trunk is where the bolt traveled to get to the ground, incinerating the bark as it went. Luckily these guys are fast growers and this one is closing that gap pretty quickly at ~18 cbh.

The Witness Elm. Located on the NW corner of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History at the National Mall in Washington D. C. This American Elm (Ulmus americana) was part of an 1850 planting and has survived the ongoing Dutch Elm Disease massacre. At ~15' around it's one of the larger remaining members of it's species.

In the Swamp at Ravenswood

Maturing Hemlock/White Pine forest mixed with Red/Black Oak, Yellow/Paper Birch, Red Maple and Beech, Witch-hazel, Mnt. Laurel understory. This is along the Magnolia Swamp Trail at Ravenswood in Gloucester, Ma. It's named for the few clusters of Sweetbay Magnolia's most northern population.

Robinia pseudoacacia (Black Locust) Dane Street Beach, Beverly, Massachusetts

Two large Silver Maples (Acer saccharinum) at the Salem Commons in Salem Mass. A swampy wooded area until the 1830's when it's ponds were filled and it was converted into a marching/drill ground. These two trees I assume are from sometime around then or a little later.

This is the Alley Pond Giant. It was measured in 2004 at 133.8' tall and 18' cbh. I measured it at 19.5' in 2015. It is supposedly the largest and oldest citizen of New York City at about 400 years old. It is a Liriodendron tulipifera or Tulip tree. #ents
