debby hadn’t meant to start crying, not really. she’d been browsing the boutique trying to find a beautiful outfit for her date with Mason but the prices… there was no way she could afford something on her salary. she panicked and began walking around aimlessly when genevieve approached her. already on edge mixed with her tone and intimidating presence.. it just happened! debby nods, “ his girlfriend.. ” she corrects, sure they hadn’t been together long but that’s what she was. “ i know he’s off! girlfriend’s know those kinds of things. ” she defends, her voice cracking softly. “ we have a date tonight and i wanted to buy something pretty.. ” she wipes at her eyes and takes a small breath to call herself, “ to surprise him. i thought it’d be nice. ”

“ah yes, you’re dana.” gen said before rolling her eyes. “so to impress him on a date you thought it would be wise to pick an expensive dress from the store he works at? something he sees all the time? you think that won’t annoy him?” gen was just rambling now. she didn’t like this girl in her space. it was one thing for her to be with mason, but this? she was not having it. “dana he isn’t that type of guy. he doesn’t do surprises.”

" she corrects automatically. debby furrows her brow, she didn't like the way genevieve was talking down to her. she tried her best to fight away any doubts she was triggering with her words. why wouldn't mason like it? she'd look good and she'd be supporting the business. she might have been hesitant before to spend so much on an outfit but now with the this woman was treating her, she felt determined to prove her wrong. she knew her boyfriend, he wouldn't hate it. " he'll like it. i know he would and i would be supporting your business. " she points out. " it's debby and he hasn't had ant problems with my surprises in the past. why would it start now? " she asks with a hint of a frown.

genevieve didn’t mean to make the woman tear up. she didn’t even know who she was until she started crying! all gen had seen was a woman who looked like she didn’t belong at her store in her store and asked what she was doing there when she clearly wasn’t going to try to get an outfit and then the water works started and she just stared at her awkwardly. “are you mason’s friend?” she had finally asked, more annoyed than anything. “because if you were a good friend at all you would know he is off today.”

normally, debby chose to skip valentine's day in favor of watching films about death and sorrow with ferris. but this year was different, debby had a boyfriend! she had a formal invite! she couldn't say no, not when mason was such a gentleman. before mason, debby had always dubbed herself the queen of first dates. one date was all it took for someone to realize she was just too much for a relationship but mason was different. he stuck around. he could handle her when she was near tears for no real reason. when she was too overwhelmed with her feelings to contain them. at least, he'd been handling it better than most so far. this relationship was still new but it was exciting nonetheless.

the ball was everything she'd seen in the romcoms joy sometimes suckered her into watching. it was beautiful and elegant but most importantly, it was romantic! while she felt out of her element, at least she had mason. watching the sweetheart queens dance, debby can't help but get teary eyed but not because she was sad but because it was just so beautiful. " this is so sweet, " debby says to her date, a genuine smile pulling at her lips. " thank you for bringing me. " @masonofhearts

for almost all of his life mason had been attending events like this. first with his mother as her honorary date, then throughout high school with some girl or another, one year with anita during their brief relationship - but usually he was escorting gen. in a work type of way, of course. she was the face of the business and he was the person that most clients dealt with on the regular - it just made sense that they would attend events such as this together. but not this year. no, this year was one of the rare ones where mason actually found himself in a relationship during valentines day. and for once he thought it might actually be one that would last.

grinning down at debby’s obvious happiness, mason wraps his arm around her waist and moves a tiny bit closer so he almost has her in a sideways hug. “thank you for coming with me. i know it goes against your usual tradition, but i’ve been honored to have you here with me tonight. it’s been one of the best sweetheart balls by far thanks to you.”

love wasn't something debby easily subscribed to. it seemed magical in fiction but in real life, she was scared of it. too much could go wrong and debby only focused on the wrong. yet with mason, she felt happy around him. happy enough to shut off the intrusive thoughts and it was a strange feeling. she rarely felt happy and she kinda liked it. when she wasn't with him, the thoughts seeped in. the bad and the ugly that could result but he made it go away. falling for some was new and terrifying, mason made it less so.

feeling mason's arm around her waist, debby leans in to him snuggling close to him. " you're just saying that, " she responded, glad the dim lights hide the blush that's crept onto her features. " you've been to many of these things... "
