What is that thing?
As Debra made her way further into town, the fog grew even denser. She could only see a few feet in front of her at this point and there was definitely no one in sight. If there was anyone else in this damned town, they were fucking silent. She couldn't hear anything except for her own footsteps, and...
Wait. Was that groaning?
Stopping in the middle of the street, Debra strained her ears to listen for the sound. It was definitely groaning and it sounded like it was coming from in front of her. Was there actually someone else here? They sounded like they might be hurt. Releasing the breath she didn't realize she was holding, Debra quickly made her way toward the noise. It got louder fast and she soon realized that it was moving toward her as well.
A minute or two later, she could finally see a vague shape forming in the fog. It looked to be human, but the groaning had taken on a strange sound. The figure moved slowly, almost as if it were shuffling it's feet. She ran toward it, but stopped in horror mere feet away.
That thing. Was most definitely not human.
It was a vaguely humanoid shape, but it had no arms and no real facial features. And in the middle of it's chest, was a gaping black hole. Debra wanted to scream. To turn and run. She wanted to do anything, but she could only freeze in place.
The monster - that was the only way she could think to describe it - took another step forward and groaned loudly. Where the hell was the sound coming from? It continued moving toward Debra and finally she came to her senses, turning and running toward the nearest building.
The door was boarded up, but thankfully one of the boards was loose enough to pry off. Debra grinned when she saw the nails on one end. A feeling started to take over her body. One she felt often. A feeling of winning. Turning on her heel, she moved back over to the monster, holding her new board up like a baseball bat.
As she got closer, she took a hard swing and smiled when she heard the wood connect with the flesh of the monster. She swung again, and watched the thing go down. Bringing the board up like an axe, she took a few more swings at the creature until she was sure it was no longer moving. Staggering backward, she breathed heavily, but still smiled brightly.
Suddenly she felt invincible. She'd defeated whatever the fuck that thing was, and had done so without any help. Her wrist didn't hurt as bad anymore and the euphoria of a kill drowned out the pain in her head.
Turning back to the building she'd run to, she saw that it was a small drugstore. Hopefully she could clean herself up in there while she figured out what the hell to do next. She walked over and pried off the rest of the boards. After a few minutes of this, she finally had a space large enough for her to fit through. The glass door itself was broken, so she went right in, saving the boards for use as future weapons.
