the woman's lips curl upwards into a toothy smile, the panic long gone from her eyes. she steps back to retreat as steve wakes, her movements staggered as if her joints were stiff. it's terrifying to watch without knowing the intent behind her being there; usually he could feel their energy, their residual emotion, their want. this time, there was nothing. it felt like an endless void. the shadows engulf her completely until lamplight floods the room and there's nothing but an empty space where she once stood.
dae-hyun continues to stare, bewildered, steve's muffled voice slicing through the static in his ears. at some point, being pried from steve's arm had seen him white-knuckling the covers again instead. his own fingers felt frozen, locked up and stiff. he lets out a trembling breath, feeling the soft kisses against the top of his head and trying to focus on steve's touch to calm himself. his next words, however, have dae-hyun grabbing onto steve again, fisting the front of his shirt, his eyes wet with unshed tears. “ no– don't. don't leave me alone, please, ” he all but begs him, his own heart thundering in his chest. “ i'm... i'm sorry for waking you up. it was a nightmare, ” it felt wrong dismissing it, especially after their earlier conversation at the wheeler's, but he couldn't make sense of anything in this state. his dream of dying, drowning in the lake, and then seeing the woman. they hadn't felt intimately connected in the moment.

his fingers begin to loosen their grip on steve's shirt, before slipping to wrap around his waist. “ ... i scared chihiro, ” he belatedly realises, his eyes darting to the open bedroom door she had bolted through. despite the fact, his arms tighten around steve, worried that he might leave to find her. it's selfish, but he cannot will himself to let go. “ can we leave the light on for a little while? ”
