just little kenshin things he does with  ‘i have hitokiri battosai around my finger’ - kaoru kamiya-himura:

he eventually throughout their marriage drops the ‘this one /  this lowly self / sessha ‘ ( it all means sessha ) and essentially just says ‘i ‘ with her because she makes him feel validated and safe to just..talk normally. the ultimate sign of his trust in her and ability to see what she sees, a man, not a legend nor monster.

he teases her relentlessly. he loves being scolded by her and the ‘kennn-shinnn!’ she makes when she’s mad at him he actually loves because her face lights up like she’s so utterly alive and nothing can beat the glow of her face. he’s in love all over again.

he starts tentatively asking for things. ‘can i have a kiss for breakfast instead, that is?’ and learning that kaoru is okay with him doing so, learning it’s okay for him to do so. 

the biggest thing is kenshin drops [kaoru-dono] and [sessha/this one] with her.

also, he loves her the way you revere something sacred, careful reverent touches, but in the same breath loves to tease her in both words + physical love and affection. 

kenshin becomes a vulnerable, ordinary man with kaoru and that is something he never was able to be after tomoe and before he met her.

a quick list of things Kaoru does with japans scariest/cuddliest dragon 

♥ she’s not a very good cook, but during special celebrations like Kenshin’s birthday, Kaoru will sneak away to Megumi’s kitchen and bake dozens and dozens of small treats until finally gets a good batch. that’s his gift every year and they’re getting better each time. she jokes that she’ll “at this rate become a pro baker when they’re old.” 

♥ Kaoru kisses his scars so he can associate them with something pleasant, too. she knows he won’t forget them, but at least he’ll have some other memories that aren’t just about how he received them. 

♥ she enjoys the pet names he gives her, ‘dearest’ is her favorite. 

♥ affection never came easy with her, so it took her a few weeks into their marriage for Kaoru to get comfortable and adjusted to it. one morning she heard him humming while cooking breakfast and thought “wow, I get to hear that voice every morning.” she gave him a hug and touching him became as natural and easy as breathing. 

♥ she’s very defensive of her husband, and she has no qualms about picking a fight with someone talking badly about him. one man even ended up in a tree! but she also understands he’s hurt people in the past, and if someone is grieving their loss that her husband caused, she’s more gentler towards them... doing her best to explain he’s not that man anymore. she has never turned a blind eye to his past -- she just knows he’s not that person anymore. she loves him no matter what.

❤ ▬▬ emotional starters to kick you in the feelings.

❝ Kaoru-san.❞ She walks softly; turning her head without really needing to. Her presence was always so concrete. Sharp. Much like a fellow warrior. Her energy is low enough as it is after healing the good monk . As always Kaoru’s soul felt like a soothing balm of white light; a light she had forgotten she too shared in her heart. Forgetting that she too, was much like her, if she ever had enough time in this limited existence now fading to contemplate it. 

The wounds in her body were barely concealed by her apparel; and she doubted the intuitive woman, seemingly ‘older’ in appearance would let it wander . With her information and her deep thoughts on wishing to save Kohaku, they had shared much. 

The girl saw her not as a demon but a woman bent on finishing what she could do, save what she could, and eliminate once more, evil like she had done in life. ❝ That immense spirit you mingle with…Kenshin-dono? Is he well? I trust he treats you generously. With your spirit I doubt much could be done against you…..he’s visited recently. I see you’ve taken a fancy.  ❞ A weak, barely practiced smile on her comely, pale lips. 

The priestess was invited to sit as she allowed her charge to wander; likely finding great pain in this place. Hopefully Kaoru’s village or at least her hut would be a safe-guard for him. He didn’t like to stray from her side. 

It tormented her that she could not heal the wounds in his soul…she would not live long enough to do so. But at the least, she would make every possible attempt to waylay their ‘plan’ and purify the jewel and sustain his life in the process. That, saving others, was all she could do. All she had ever wanted in her life besides being with – no, do not think of it. Think of it as you sleep.

All she wanted to do it seemed, odd, now that she was closer to what was likely, hopefully, her eternal sleep, she had softened considerably with those she had cared for her in a radiance that had blinded the lives of those she had touched in her life. The woman was too far gone in her self-loathing to realize that radiance remained; however sorrowful and miserable - tragic. 

❝ I’m glad you’re well. I brought herbs and am prepared to heal any and all villagers. Mind not my hands. You know I will hardly budge, do you not?❞ A wry look as she briefly took her hands in hers; cold against warm; cracked skin showing air going through it. ❝ Scrapes and bruises on your hands from tilling soil and battles…here. I’ll mend it.  ❞

❝….You are a bright young woman. I want you to understand this when you doubt your femininity. I want you to understand that your kindness to me has healed…perhaps a greater part of me than I realized. 

Perhaps the ‘me’ that was I feel her more keenly. I have not told a single living soul such. But you were so persistent in allowing me passage, presence, and in life…our friendship would have flourished until we both sprouted gray hairs. 

I thank you, Kaoru-san.  ❞ Her rare, warm smile forever tinged with sorrow in her aching, tired eyes met her blue eyes, seeing the concern at realizing that those same air-flowing cracks were very close to her neck.

❝ That said, I feel..more resolved in my purpose being here. What means a corpse woman can do I will see it done. The poor boy I mean every inch to spare. 

In life it would have been my utmost duty to heal the scars Naraku has rent in his heart. His sister, that is a job you have taken on, haven’t you? And so. . hated or loved, I am merely contented that I visited once more. 

Kaoru-san?❞ A beat, Kikyō softly smiling, and in her lips and eyes was farewell, her body was a monument of coming death, of coming sleep, and everything about her breathed farewell for all her gentleness.

❝ Follow your instinct. Love is precious. I cherished it. I cherish it still. A secret I will impart to you alone long when my false body is perished. And so . . let Kenshin-dono know that he is alright to court you. Let him know whatever time is enough. That…was what I wished for in my life.

One more thing?❞ Her smile turned sad, no, there was no word for its sorrow, or how her body sagged a bit despite the woman holding up her cracked shoulders. Her hand closes atop of her own supporting her, cold but warmed by the sun outside. The deteriorating woman smiles. 

❝ I would ask you to pray for my soul. Like you once wished to before? Now…is a good time. Soon, I think. Do you understand? ❞ The grief streaking across her friend’s face nor the budding tears had the woman gently wiping them with her sleeve; before against her better nature and guard, her pride, the dead woman quietly pulled her into a dying body.

❝…Kaoru-san….I thank you for everything. While I would never have chosen this existence, having you near when it is nearing its end is enough for me. So please, no tears . Please see me off with a smile you must never lose. It saves souls as much as a priestess can. I’m glad I met you. ❞

                  InuYasha verse description / headcanons.

Kaoru works as a “demon” slayer, however she doesn’t like that term and instead refers to herself as a protector. she comes from a long line of protectors/trainers who have the same ideology as her. her father was killed protecting the village. she took over his task. 

her ideals are still very much the same as in Rurouni Kenshin - everyone deserves a place in the world.

she protects both demons and humans alike... if they have a conscience and are capable of change/kindness/growing, she will help them. a lot of people have called her a traitor and deem her actions as a “betrayal to the humans” but she doesn’t really mind. she has met cruel humans and kind demons, and cruel demons and kind humans, so she believes everyone deserves to be treated equally no matter the species. it’s something instilled to her by her father!

however, sometimes it is inevitable to kill a demon... and when she does, she gives them a proper exorcism and burial (if there’s anything left of them, that is.) basically, she avoids killing at all costs unless she absolutely has no other choice.

the first time Kaoru met Kenshin ( @scarbladed ) was when she was a child... he was in his dragon form. she apologized for disturbing his sleep, put her coat on his paw so he could use it as a “blanket” and went on her way. 

she would eventually leave the village for a while to travel and train and study, she comes back some years later. she went away when she was 12, although she frequently visited the village but wouldn’t settle back more permanently until she was 18. 

she opens up her dojo/home to anyone that needs it, including a little half cat demon named Yahiko. she quickly adopts him and calls him her son.

also, she teaches the village kids the importance of being accepting, and how to be cautious but not prejudice towards demons. she makes sure they know that there are some demons who will hurt them, like Naraku. but that there are some who are gentle spirits that would protect them, like Kenshin.

Kaoru is well known throughout the lands. many slayers, young and older, come to her for guidance/assistance and some stay to even train. 

in this verse, she’s 24 years old around the time the messy business of hunting Naraku begins. she ran into Kikyou once (before knowing who she even was) and saw her playing with children. so she sat down and played with them as well alongside her. Kaoru knew she wasn’t one with the living, and told her that if she needed any kind of help in crossing over, she would always be available to help her in any way she can. Kikyou asked if she was there to kill her and Kaoru responded with “No, I just wanted to play with the children too.” 

Kaoru would spend a lot of time seeing Kenshin in his dragon form... so the first time she meets him in his more human look, she almost doesn’t recognize him. he seems familiar but she just assumes he’s a wandering demon and is still very kind to him.

ever since she was little, she was able to understand most demons intentions by their auras. she can tell who is a threat and who is not, so tricking her is hard. not impossible, but nearly. the demon that killed her father was able to get past her intuition, but she still doesn’t hold that against other demons and chooses to still trusts her guts. why should one tragic experience ruin all the good ones she’s had/will have??

she helps Sango ( @slayersheart ) rebuild  her village / home! they knew of each other because of their line of work, but they met through Kenshin and quickly became fast friends. Kaoru was endeared by how kind Sango is to the demons/half-demon that she travels with. she regularly brings Shippou toys and Kirara fish treats! 

Kaoru is quick to understand and accept her feelings for Kenshin. it takes a while to get there, but they eventually marry and end up having one (biological) son named Kenji. she convinces Kenshin not make her immortal, but to help her live longer. since Kenji and Yahiko age slower, she wants to stay alive to raise them and of course, be with her husband too. she stays with him and their family for another couple hundred years.

HIS LIPS TUG INTO A FAINTLY GROWING SMILE. She was calm and composed; vital in a warrior, and knew her strengths and weaknesses wisely. It was something to be admired from the little mortal who had clung to his snout and wreathed whatever she could reach in petals. It wasn’t a parental feeling, merely distant fondness like any child he considered deserving of an extra pair of eyes, however massive. 

Those strange eyes, inhuman in their timeless light; but human in their care; contradict and twist while smiling that achingly kind smile that seemed to reach from above to below . It isn’t unlike her to not assume he’s still fairly protective of her, that hadn’t changed. But she didn’t really need it, did she? 

So why, then? It was…strange. He couldn’t recall going such lengths since long ago, longer than any ancient relatives, the first of her ancestors, and further back did his life stretch. But another had not. He cannot remember her face so well, but he felt her smile once again. Odd. Was her human soul lingering after a thousand years since he’d met that woman? 

Kaoru is not that woman. She is something new and extraordinary. She is herself, and it is more thanenough. If there are feelings that are anything less than platonic, loving friendship and kinship – long have they been repressed and given chase to ever being entertained with mortal lives, much less any like himself. 

❝ He almost thinks himself a nuisance at times. Perhaps it is merely habit that he bumps into you so often, Kaoru-dono. Pray forgive him. Maybe his memory is finally going … oro. ❞ A beat, and his eyes, so fine at hiding any measure of whatever he had no wish to see, briefly, in a flit, widen, the smile remaining.

❝ — ….yes. He enjoys your company as well, Kaoru-dono. Truly, from his heart, he does.  ❞ Violet eyes crinkle in his comely face.  ❝ Spending time with you is something he treasures. ❞ His chest both burns with some strange fire at her words….and aches. His clawed fingers almost reach to touch where his beating heart lay within his chest…..

        ... she listens to him closely, a small smile tugging at the corners of her lips at his response. Kaoru can’t help but find his apologetic behavior endearing -- because even when he has nothing to apologize for, he seems to do it instinctively. again her curiosity is peaking at the reason why... but she subsides it. 

       ❛  you’re not a nuisance... to me.  ❜ can’t say the same for any demons that scurried away when they felt his strong presence and aura in this area. she has impulse to reach out to him... but she stops her hand half-way. instead placing both her hands around her legs, curling up and placing her chin on her knees for a moment. 

      ❛  I’m happy to hear that.  ❜  her voice is a little slower now... the words dragging on as her body starts to go limper. when she’s on her own - Kaoru doesn’t sleep very well. it’s part of the job - you have to always be alert on a mission, and she’s regularly away from the village. but when she knows he’s watching ... everything feels safer. she sniffles back a yawn - and it’s not necessarily that she’s tired but... she’s comfortable. there are rare times when a slayer has the chance to feel this level of ease. 

      a quiet hum comes from her, content and soft and warm.  ❛  you can stay here... by the fire. don’t have to go in the shadows.  ❜ her shoulder brushes against his, Kaoru leans on him for a moment but quickly goes back to her place.  ❛  if you want.  ❜

❝ … . IS THAT RIGHT.❞ A small red-haired man stands before her in a swirl of leaves dissipating.  He looks half-amused and half inscrutable; his eyes always holding that tinge of melancholy,  seemingly lightened with company. And hers has long been blessed in such regard, although seeing her grown after so many years in such a blink; feels strange.  Mortal’s time truly flew; and he cherished her no less, but perhaps – the movement of the blanket warrants a soft, oro,as he treads quietly near her. 

❝ Thank you. He’d be glad to sit with you for a while he would. Will you be camping here tonight ? ❞ All the more reason to stay near, even if quietly. She was a force of nature, but for his peace of mind he’d like to be near in case there were more enemies than she had packed for. Knowing Kamiya Kaoru? Highly unlikely. His violet eyes flit to hers from his place beside her; hair lit and near glowing from the added flames casting him in a strange half-light.

      ❛  this seems like a good place to rest, don’t you think?  ❜ she asks, her head tilting just slightly with curiosity. ❛  seeing as you’ll be staying near here anyway...  ❜ she knows your intentions - it doesn’t go unnoticed that Kenshin tends to stay close when she’s on longer-term missions.

      she doesn’t mind, though. because if she did - she’d have sent him packing ages ago. but she can’t exactly figure out why he has this much of a protective nature towards her ... and she doesn’t have it in her to really ask or pressure him to answer. it’s enough that he knows that she knows -- and that it’s okay. 

      ❛  your powers are helpful, but... even without them... well...  ❜   she reaches towards the fire, wiggling her little fingers to warm them beside the flames. ❛  I like your company.  ❜

Oh, has it been trouble. He’s been lured in by demons of all nature, and size, and preference. He’s slept with the most beautiful woman of his dreams and woken up to a literal hog. Somehow, he seems to never learn his lesson.

The gamble is always worth it.

And from her, at least, he senses nothing but human. Human, and freshly cut, lopsided apple slices. Really, what has him blinking in sudden awareness isn’t the threat of his life – it’s the sound of his own name.

“Inuyasha and Sango?” he intones, curious, a little cautious, but mostly intrigued. He’d come out this far from camp specifically to remain out of dodge while they were asleep. What were the chances that at this time of night, one of their acquaintances approached? “My, what a small world.” There’s a pause – it’s a contemplation between letting her off on her own with vague directions back toward the village, allowing Miroku to remain in solitude, or bringing her back himself.

Really, the answer was obvious. “Let me show you the way? They’re likely both asleep at this hour, but by the time we make it back, the sun will be rising.”

❛  small world indeed. I hope I’m not bothering you too much.  ❜ though the look he had when he thought nobody was witnessing... she can’t help but feel some sentiment and concern. 

Kaoru tends to carry light when it comes to personal possessions, but it takes her a quick moment to lift back up all her weapons and utilities. it’s heavier than she makes it seem - but in their line of work, you get used to carting around pounds and pounds of equipment. 

once she’s settled, she makes a gesture for him to go lead the way. ❛  i’m glad to hear they are sleeping - last time I saw them, they looked exhausted.  ❜ she follows along his pace, keeping conscious of the fact that sometimes she gets chatty herself, when she’s this tired herself. 

❛  I had met them through an ah - uh - ah  ❜ well she’s not sure what to refer Kenshin as, so she settles with --    ❛  a mutual acquaintance.  ❜

        ❛  why wouldn’t I be comfortable in your true form?  ❜ oh, hush. she waves a dismissive hand at him at his chastising over her clothes. she finds it amusing as much as she finds it endearing. she steps aside to let him light their fire, picking up her sword to keep it away from the impact. 

       ❛  it’s not that cold -- but the sun is setting soon.  ❜ she won’t say no to warming up a bit, at least. Kaoru drags a blanket to set beside it, spreading it enough for two people. she taps the seat beside her, looking up at the dragon almost expectantly. 

          ❛  come come come -- sit. change back and sit with me for a while, won’t you?  ❜

Shot down already. Thankfully, his ego was used to it by now. He stands up to approach her, keeping a friendly distance; though she was worth his pursuit, it was simply too late at night and– he was too mentally exhausted to bother with the mental gymnastics necessary. 

He bookmarks the bright colour of her eyes and the slope of her kosode along her collarbones for later, instead.

“Who am I to refuse a gift from a woman so beautiful?” Okay, some habits are hard to kick, mental exhaustion or not. His hands are firmly at his sides, though. Well– one is. The other tentatively is held out palm-up, to await her offering. “I can’t say I’m in the habit of accepting fruit from strangers in the middle of the night, but I’m grateful for it.” A beat, and then a grin.

“And I’d be happy to return the favour. Pardon– your name is…?”

despite what Inuyasha has told her, he seems like a perfect gentleman. she offers him back a bright smile and a bashful laugh at the compliment, unsure how to exactly respond to that so she merely brushes past it instead.  

he’s certainly trusting when it comes to a pretty face, that’s for sure. Kaoru makes a mental note of that... that could bode trouble for him some day, if it hasn’t already. what if she was a demon? 

but she’s not - a fellow slayer with common friends is all. she extends her hand and puts a container full of apples in his hand. 

❛  Kaoru. might you be Miroku? I apologize if I’m mistaken. -- I’ve come to meet with a half-demon and a demon slayer in this village, but I’ve arrived a bit later than I was expected.
