i was in a communal all-gender restroom today and as i was washing my hands a middle-aged man came out of one of the stalls, started to make for the door, clocked me standing at the sinks, and changed course to wash his hands with a real hangdog look on his face

i was watching the last unicorn for the 352205462553 billionth time and there’s a scene that really stuck with me. right after amalthea gets turned into a human, she says over and over, “i’m a unicorn, i’m a unicorn!” and implies that she would have rather died and become a human. that combined with her being naked, the most raw and natural form you can be with your body, this scene reminds me of gender dysphoria and how it feels. deep down you are a unicorn and you know you are a unicorn, but your current physical self does not agree. the pain of being trapped inside the wrong body is so excruciating that death would’ve been better.

i have for a while been using stepping on somebody's toes as a metaphor for misgendering. and i genuinely think that it's kind of a good one.

if you keep stepping on somebody's toes for a long time at minimum they're probably going to start really hating you and at maximum you might cause them lasting damage.

if you do it on purpose you're a dick. if it's on accident but you keep doing it that person is still going to be mad at you because you don't care enough to try not to step on their toes

if you give a grovelling begging apology after accidentally stepping on somebody's toes one time you're going to make the whole thing awkward, but not giving a quick "sorry" before moving on is still kind of rude.

not all of us can live in fantasy 100% the time like i see some people on here do and it's refreshing to learn something new. its been philosophy, essays, and history for me and i feel much more at home on planet Earth for it knowing that people have been struggling and wishing similarly for millenia.

its not that fiction doesnt have its place, its important and healthy to exercise the imagination, but non-fiction can do so much to boost and supplement that. if not for yourself, for your art or for the people you're around
