DEIDRE WRITES ABOUT JAMES - Part IV
"To you who made me see things I could never see alone"
That's what Deidre wrote on the first page of the notebook she has been filling with memories of the friendship and love she had with James before the Time Jump. One day she plans to give it to him. maybe to explain everything, maybe with the silly hope that he will remember, maybe just so he knows.
[He sees her step back and makes a stronger effort to be in control of his emotions and aura. At her question, he watches Corinne holding a blade to to boy’s next.] You’re better than that, Corey. [It was a whisper, not judgmental, just soft. He nods at her words.] Makes sense. [Once their out of the room, he clenches and unclenches his fists a couple of times.] I apologize for my tension. [There’s a dry sarcasm in the words.] It’s many things. Most of which even the most kind-hearted individual wouldn’t care about. But, right now, one of the most pressing is Project Play, yes. Someone that matters to me is in there. She had to watch me and her sister in the last one and I worry.
(She looks back at the screen for a second after more or less hearing his whispered words, but she avoids seeing the screen for fear of seeing something too gruesome or violent. She'd seen enough. But it was safe to assume he was concerned about the dark-haired girl, the Blackwood girl) Don't worry, she will not do it. Beheading is against the rules as well as other execution methods, she'll draw her sword back (she states, not really thinking the girl wouldn't sink her blade in the boy's neck because of some higher power or moral code, but simply because the girl ought to know it was against the rules and she'd be elminated from the Play). You don't have to apologize for that, the majority here live under a permanent state of tension. Myself included (she replies with a light shrug, managing a brief smile to reassure that it was okay, and apologizing wasn't needed). The Blackwood girl (she says now that he'd confirmed what she'd thought about) It looks like she's doing alright in there. But I understand it, it can't be easy to see people you care about beating the shit out of each other just because the headmaster thinks it's entertaining... Oh, we can talk about something else. Anything else. We walked out from that room but we're still going on about the same thing- sorry.
Sexier though. [James winks playfully, giving her his classic smirk. He was in a good mood despite Project Play and school in general. Things were pretty good for him right now regardless] Is it? I’d hate to see them then. I’d actually have to be worried about you Mason. [Noticing the way his thumb brushes over her skin lightly and even the fact that he was still holding her hand, James drops it and stuffs his hands into his pockets] So…why all the limbering up? Training for something special?
(She raises an eyebrow at that comment before she chuckles) Are you always this cheeky? (she asks in a teasing way, though obviously, she knew the answer to that question. Always flirty, always making that kind of remarks to girls). You got better things to worry about, Talbott. And I'm a big girl, I can take care of myself (she pokes his chest once giving him a rather confident smile. It seemed like they had fallen back into the typical interaction they used to have before when they were best friends, and it was a good thing, it made Deidre happy that they could be like this again. Maybe, just maybe, they would follow a similar path than last time and eventually he would catch up to her, to reciprocate the love she had for him). Something special? No. I don't know... for all I know I could end up in Project Play one of these days (she replies with a light shrug, moving a hand up to take the rubber band off her hair, undoing her ponytail to let her hair down as she normally had it).I guess I just thought it was time I learnt to defend myself.
Whoa there million dollar baby, wanna take it easy on the punching bag? Poor guy can’t even get a hit in huh? [James chuckles lightly as he moves towards Deidre, having entered the room a couple seconds ago. Looking down at her hands, he takes them in his and winces] Yikes…that’s actually a lot worse than it looked from back there. Are you alright?
Million Dollar Baby? Thanks, but I'm barely half as good as Hilary Swank (she replies with a light smile as she removes the other glove. Her right hand wasn't in such bad shape as the left one. She looks at him without saying anything as he takes her hands in his. Nodding lightly to reply, she looks away from his eyes, seeing the bruises and the small cuts on her knuckles). Believe it or not, it's better than when I started (she tells him in a soft tone, managing a light chuckle. Before, James had been there to fight her fights, but now thigs were different and she wanted to learn to fend for herself. That was why she'd started practicing every day for the past month).
[As on edge as he is, when she bumps into him, his aura blazes around his hands before she apologizes and he calms down.] No worries. [At her suggestion, he looks at the screen then back at her.] If I leave I won’t…[I won’t know if something happens to her.] But if I stay..If I stay I’m liable to lose my temper at someone. [He lets out a slow breath.] I’m game for not being here. [He moves slowly toward the door, looking at the screens and the teachers and her, looking surprisingly nonchalant given how tense he is.]
(Deidre's eyes widen a bit at the sight of the glowing, red energy that formed around his hands. It seemed a bit dangerous so she takes a small step back, just in case). You won't what? (she asks, looking at the screen to see what he was seeing. The images playing on the screen showed a dark-haired girl and a scruffy boy, her with her blade to his neck. Deidre turns away, not wanting to see what would happen next. She just assumed that he was worried about someone there in Project Play, but didn't ask anything else). If someone asks, we went to get something to eat (she suggests with a shrug, since that was the excuse she'd been using in the past Plays. She walks out of the door and lets out a breath, just being out of that room felt good). You look a bit uh- tense (she says, depite how obvious the remark was) Do you want to talk about it? Is it because of Project Play? I don't mean to be nosy or anything, it's just- If I can help...
[Eyes fixed on the screen, Russ paces restlessly. Why does seeing Corinne in that…simulation…upset him like this? His fingers tap on his crossed arms as he sees the programs follow her. His breath catches subtly and a faint glow appears around his hands, dissipating as she deals with them. Good thing she had some control now. Still.] I’d rather be back in the fucking maze than watch this.
(She looks around the room to see if there were any teachers there. They all seemed either too excited about Project Play or about to fall asleep. Deidre takes the opportunity to get up from her seat and try to sneak out from there. She'd seen enough, and honestly, there was nothing she hated more than to see her classmates fighting for their lives as if it was just some cool action movie...) Oh. Sorry (she apologizes as she bumps into Russ. Hearing him say those things she could imagine he hated watching Project Play as much a she did) You don't have to watch it... They're distracted now (she looks over her shoulder, seeing their teachers weren't looking in their direction) You could sneak out too.
"This is precisely what is wrong with the combat junkies in these halls," Breanna starts, her eyes wandering over towards the girl at the mat. When the girl removes her hand from the glove, she quirks a brow and moves towards her. Shoving her hand into her pocket, she pulled out a spray and held out her hands towards the girl. "You all believe that it’s through sheer power alone that you will win whatever comes you way. You’re thoroughly wrong. Give me your hand, this will numb the pain as well as help with the healing process. Something new that I’ve made - works much better and faster than the medicine at the healing wing. Though, of course, it’s not as great as the power of healing." A light chuckle leaves her lips as she waves her hand in the air. "Well, are you going to let me help you, or not?"
If you think I'm a combat junkie you clearly have no idea who I am (Deidre replies dryly, not appreciating the other's girl blatan prejudice. She wasn't as inept in combat as she'd been before, but she wasn't an ace in combat either). Look at me. Does it look like I rely on sheer power only? (she asks with a raised eyebrow, since her skinny form wasn't one of a strong fighter. Obviously someone like her had to rely on speed and agility to win a fight. She looks at the spray and then back at the girl, unsure of whether or not to accept that offer. It was more her stubborness rather than uncertainty what was urging her to say no and figure out a way to heal herself. It was a little bruise and a cut, nothing she couldn't manage to heal by herself) I think I can manage without that.
(Over the past weeks Deidre had made it a habit to train combat in the afternoon. Combat class wasn't enough to the weakling she was... or used to be. Miss Dunham had congratulated her on her progress, apparently she was finally developing some muscle and had aquired a better form when throwing some punches. It still hurt like hell, her whole body was sore after class, not to mention her bruised knuckles -sometimes even bloodied knuckles- like today) Great... (she mutters to herself at the sight of the blood-stained bandages around her hands as she removes the glove).

Napping? You think napping is better than being with me? Shame, my darling, complete shame. [He makes a clicking noise with his tongue, giving her a classic smirk before he tilts his head to sigh lightly] I don’t need a girlfriend, Raven, I’ve got much more important pressing matters to take on. Like napping. [He teases back, chuckling to himself before he waves her off] Plus they aren’t girlfriends. [Raising his eyebrows at her, James looks down at Raven with a slightly guarded expression. His eyes search hers for a moment, trying to find some sort of explanation for what she meant. Yes, they were trouble together but the way she spoke about them seemed she didn’t care they were probably being really fucking stupid getting involved with each other. Honestly he couldn’t help but feel there was something about her that was just…different. James wasn’t quite sure if he liked that or not] It’s not a distraction, more like a…break. Don’t you need a break sometimes? Or do you always enjoy being a goody two shoes? [His tone comes out teasing but it’s not unnoticed that his breath hitched slightly in his throat when her hand moves to the collar of his shirt. When her lips meet his, James moves forward, pressing her thin frame in between himself and the wall behind them. Dammit, the power this girl probably had over him…something always took over within him when he was with her, and he noticed it more when he’d kissed her back at the facility. He just quite simply enjoyed kissing her]
(She can only smirk at his reply, trying not to laugh about it). I'm sure your 'girlfriends' will be heartbroken to hear that (she replies with an arched eyebrow, still using the word girlfriends, because well, 'women you seduce and probably sleep with' was too much of a mouthful. It was strange how both of them were so guarded around each other, but were also able to easily find the cracks in the walls the had around each other, effortlessly sneaking in. After the whole ordeal at the facility she began to find it harder to be completely distant and indifferent to this man. The things they'd talked about, the promise he'd made her that they'd make it out of there... the look in his eyes when they were taking her away to start the experiments, the kiss.). A break, huh? (she asks in a low tone, very much aware of how the distance between them seemed to have grown shorter in the past minute) I could use a break, I guess. And if you think I'm just a goody two shoes, you don't know me, James (she replies with a light smile. And just like that, they were kissing again. It seemed like this would end up becoming some sort of habit. She lets her arms move around his neck, pulling him closer when he trapped her between his body and the wall behind her. For a moment she pulls away, catching her breath, but soon enough their lips meet again).

Can you? Care to list a couple? I’m afraid I don’t quite believe you. [He chuckles lightly, shrugging his shoulders as his hand moves to brush a strand of hair behind her ear] Only the very special ones. You’ll be happy to know there aren’t many. Girls just aren’t as quick witted as you, Raven. They really aren’t. And I’d take that compliment because I haven’t got many. [He teases, obviously kidding about the last part but this was how they were, always joking] Maybe? [Another small chuckle escapes him before he rests a hand on the base of her neck, his numb brushing softly against her skin] Enemies? After what I did for you, no. No, I think we’re a bit past that. You are trouble though, Raven, very much so. Hm…I’m not sure what to make of you.
I could be training. Catching bad guys. Following some leads about the people who captured us. Napping (she adds the last one with a light smirk obviously to tease him. When he brushes a loose strand of hair behind her ear she thinks about slapping his hand away or something, but in the moment she doesn't do anything. She knew she shouldn't like those sort of gestures from him, but she did like them, just a little). Not that it matters. I'm not going to join your little group of girlfriends, Stratagem (she replies with confidence, ignoring his attempt at a compliment). Maybe (she repeats, feeling his hand resting on her neck as he gently brushed his thumb against her skin. Damn this cocky bastard... she shouldn't like the way he looked at her, talked to her, how he stood so close to her). So we're not enemies, huh? Then what are we? You with The Guild and me with the Guardian Corps, we definitely are trouble for each other. We don't need these kind of distractions... do we? (she asks in a low, somewhat seductive tone, and she wasn't even using her power to lure him in. One hand had moved to his chest and it went up to loosely take hold of his collar. It probably wasn't her brightest idead to play Stratagem's game, but damn, she really wanted to. That's why this time around she was the one to steal the kiss from him).

Hey hey now, put those away. No threat here. Unless being extremely sexy is a threat to you, which it might be. [Chuckling lightly, James sighs and folds his arms over his chest] Oh yeah? Better things to do than me? Really? [Though his eyebrow was slightly raised when she calls him James, he shrugs his shoulders and moves around her slowly before stopping in front of her again] Oh no, you’re supposed to be easier to find, dear. I’d gladly love to make a habit of kissing you. Tell me you haven’t been thinking about it, Deidre. Just try. [Stepping back close to her, James smirks] Apparently not. A bit bothered are we?
(She rolls her eyes at his comment, put ends up putting away her sai. If he tried anything shady, she could still make his eardrums bleed). Really. I can think of several things (she replies with a light smirk. She looks up to meet his eyes when he stands in front of her, so awfully close really... She doesn't let her eyes move down to look at his lips). I bet. Do you say that to all the girls? (she replies, tilting her head a bit to the side. He was a flirt, a player too, possibly. He didn't even try to hide that away, instead made full use of his charming, cocky personality. This time she makes no attempt to move away from him, though). Maybe (she replies with a low tone, barely above a whisper as she leans close, speaking those words close to his lips. She could also taunt him if he wanted to play this game). Bad day. That's all you need to know. I can't share all my secrets with you, Stratagem. We're "enemies", remember? (she replies with a smirk, though she no longer considered him to be he enemy. Not after he saved her life).

Raven? [James steps out from behind the wall he was leaned up again, a small smirk on his face] You’ve gotten fairly good at avoiding me but really did you think it would last forever? What, two days alone with each other trapped in a government facility and you’re suddenly not interested. [Raising an eyebrow, James moves closer to her, closing the distance between them] I’m still thinking about the last time I kissed those lips.
(The moment she hears him make a sound, she's already pulled out her two sai knives. She holds them down, though, because after what had happened at the facility she didn't think he'd attack her) I'm not avoiding you, James, I have better things to do (she replies with a light smirk of her own, calling him by the name he'd said was his. Whether or not that was real, she didn't know). Oh, excuse me, was I supposed to call you? Sorry (she replies with full sarcasm). You kissed me once, doesn't mean we'll make a habit of it (she puts one of the sai back in its sheath before she places her hand on his chest, lightly pushing him away) Do they not know what personal space is in Ireland?
The nickname "Raven" was given to Deidre for several reasons: her dark suit when fighting crime and villains, her sound related powers and the high pitched scream that can leave a man deaf. But also, ravens are typically associated with death, and so far she hasn't failed to finish off her targets on her own or with the Guardian Corps. So if Raven is hunting you, you might as well be dead already.
AU HEADCANON #2 - DEIDRE'S WEAPONS
Deidre doesn't rely on her powers entirely, if anything she uses a mix of her Sound Manipulation and her skills as a warrior. In the monastery she learned to master the use of sai knives, katanas and shuriken daggers, but er trademark weapon as Raven have become the sai. Traditionally, a fighter uses three sai knives. Two of them as the main weapons, and one strapped to the waist, hidden and to be used only in case of being disarmed, so that the fighter can still have means of defense. Carrying the third sai to her mission has merely become a precaution because to this day, Deidre has never made use of her third one.
AU HEADCANON #1 - DEIDRE'S TRAINING
There's a heavy oriental influence in "Raven's" fighting style. Having spent most of her childhood and teen years in Bhutan and India given to her parents' work there as diplomats. Since she was little Deidre got immersed in martial arts and started learning to fight with katanas, shuriken daggers and what would later become her trademark weapon as Raven: sai knives.
Her sensei saw her potential to be even better, so by the time she was fifteen he promoted her to a league of skilled warriors that he trained, furthering her training in a monastery. Since Deidre has the power of Sound Manipulation, her sensei used this to turn her into an even better warrior, making her excel with one very important skill: know how to rely on sound rather than sight. So in some of the training exercises she would, her sensei would blindfold her so that she would fight merely based on the sounds that her opponents made.
