//Hey guys, I’d like to apologize for disappearing without warning a few months ago. I lost my muse for Sans, and was expecting it to come back in just a little while, but so far it hasn’t.

That said, I am officially placing this blog on hiatus. I don’t know when I’ll be back, but hopefully some time in the future I can get back to writing Sans. Sorry to all the people I had threads with and dropped the ball, you guys are great and I had a lot of fun writing with you.

“WE HAVEN’T BURNED THE HOUSE DOWN IN AT LEAST THREE WEEKS.” Papyrus said proudly, trying to hold the squirming dog so she couldn’t escape. “NEXT WEEK, SHE’S GOING TO TRY AND TEACH ME HOW TO MAKE QUICHE.”

Sans tapped the dirty pan lightly against the countertop to mimic the sound of a rimshot.

Shaking her head Crimson could feel the blood rush in her skull. It was nauseating to say the least. Her hands, which were first dangling, started to reach towards the clasp of her seat belt as her eyes fluttered open. With a few more shakes her ears twitched and her attention was returning as she started to struggle with the seat belt. First with meek attempts, then with desperation as she worked to wiggle her tiny hips out of the strap. Unlike Sans she still had her wings and tail to worry about, and still struggled with them against the belt, “I’m trying!” Finally, something gave and she was able to depress the button, releasing her body to painfully flop against the roof of the car. She lets out an annoyed yet pained grunt on impact before crawling out through the remains of the window, “Hold it just a bit longer!”  As she gets up on to her feet she makes a few mini bats to help hold the car up before reaching in once more to retrieve her bag from the back seat. With her bag in hand she pulls away fast from the vehicle and lets the bats dissolve to dust, before looking up the hill to see a few contents of the ruin trunk scattered in the brush. Looking down at her arms she grimaces at the few glass shards sticking out from them and the long scrapes from her crawl. “Sans.” She spots the first aid kit from the trunk dangling from a branch a few meters up the hill, “We should get back up to the road.” She keeps her arms down now as the pain sets in with the adrenaline dying out. Hopefully they can grab the kit along the way and treat her injuries.

Sweat beaded on Sans’s forehead as he fought against gravity to keep the car from moving. He began to wonder if he should have kept better practice of his magic since they made it to the surface, when the load suddenly became lighter. A wave of relief flooded him when he saw the tiny helpers pushing up against the car. If Crim could still summon those bats of hers, surely she couldn’t be that injured. As they vanished, he released the car from his control.

The sudden return of the car’s weight finally rips the tree’s roots from the crumbling ground. They tumble down the hillside together, the noise becoming fainter and fainter until the fog muffles it completely. Sans isn’t sure whether there’s even a bottom to reach.

He turns his attention to Crim, who seems not to have fared as well as him in the crash, and then follows her gaze upwards to the kit above them. “just a sec, i got it.” He scrambles up the slope, careful not to kick any loose rocks down towards Crim. Once he’s a the base of the tree, he concentrates his magic again to gently levitate the first aid kit down from the branch. Package safely obtained, he returns to Crim.

“ok. how bad is it?” he asks, starting to pull supplies out of the red bag. “we can get back to the road in a minute, let me patch you up first.”

Frisk gave the other an uninterested look. Why would this skeleton want to now what they were up to? The child signed to him with quick motions from their hands. Kind of impressed that he knew what they were signing. Mostly cause they’d usually have to take their notepad out to tell others what they wanted to say.

‘I don’t know.’ They signed simply. ‘Probably go off to explore or something.’

The response didn’t sit right with Sans. Maybe it was a glint in their eyes, or the sense that the child had more determination than an offhand desire to explore could explain. He walked around them slowly, making sure to stop between them and the path forward.

Just a simple detour. 

That’s what it was supposed to be.

Just a simple, little, detour.

How wrong that assumption turned out to be. Halfway down the road the fog grew thick and vision became a humid sheet of white. There wasn’t even time to react when the road became disheveled and cracked. There was barely enough time to hit the brakes before the bridge ahead was revealed to be missing. Now, tumbling in a box of metal into the ditch, vision is going dark. Flipping over and over until the final impact with a thick tree trunk, making the metal groan. Balance is lost as the vehicle topples back from the wood with one last crunching thud into the ground, wheels now up in the air and passengers dangling within their seat belts. Airbags hang near deflated, serving their purpose, and the cars engine sputters the few last revs before dying. All there is now is silence. Not a sound of another motor passing by, not even a sound of nature. No birds, no squirrels; not even a curious bear.

Sans couldn’t believe how quickly it happened. There was no time to shout a warning to the driver, no time for him to concentrate enough magic to hold back their vehicle from hurtling over the edge. He slips out of consciousness on the car’s first flip.

“look out, the CORE—” Sans sputters awake, struggling against the cloth strap holding him aloft. He blinks in surprise to find not the whirring machinery and red glow of Hotland, but instead a cold, damp, rocky hillside. It takes him a few seconds swinging there to think himself back into the present. The summit, the drive, the—

“crim. crim, are you ok?” He finally thinks to check himself for injury, and finds no obvious cracks or chips in his bones. With the sky veiled by the heavy fog, he has no way to tell how much time has passed since the crash. Pushing his seat belt out of the way, he twists himself out the shattered window and onto the ground. The tree groans under the shifting weight, threatening to slide further down the slope. “c’mon crim, we need to get outta here.” Blue magic threads from his hands to the shredded tires, but it can only delay the inevitable.

Ten years. It had been ten years since… Well. Sans didn’t like to think about it. He would have forgotten the date if could, but it seemed like the numbers identifying one of the worst days in his life were seared into the back of his skull. A stronger than usual sense of guilt gnawing at his bones had sent him to his usual stool at Grillby’s, where he’d been slumped over the counter for the past few hours. He hardly even registered the movement of the other monsters out the door as the hour neared the bar’s closing time. Crumpled ketchup bottles and empty paper baskets littered the space around him. He raised a finger slowly to request a refill.

* hey, grillby, could ya —

The trembling finger in front of him suddenly blurred. Could he be—? No. He hadn’t cried at all the day of, ten years ago. It must be a trick of the light. Or maybe you could actually get drunk on just ketchup and fries.

He’d been watching the familiar skeleton drown himself in ketchup for what seemed like most of the evening, silently watching him and giving in to his requests despite the biting guilt that he should cut him off. Regardless of what the bony companion was choosing to bury his emotions beneath, there was nothing good that could come out of it if he was to judge based on the misery that radiated out of his short frame. Sans never did really frown, but it was obvious to that white hot gaze when something was amiss.

Busying himself with sweeping a rag across the top of that polished counter, bringing the mahogany to a sheen under his warm touch, words caught his attention and caused a notable flicker to roll along the contours of his face. An incline of that head and his sights were trained on Sans through the lenses of his glasses. Inquisitive nature mirrored by an arch in the ridge above his eye, flames tinting with a soft hue of amber as he moved to peer at the shuddering monster from across the counter.

Something was definitely off for him, more so than any of the previous fits of melancholy or apathy that he had witnessed in that stool. He waited in silence, an air of curiosity as he waited for the sentence to be completed.

Looking straight at Grillby was better, even if it meant he’d be seeing spots for hours later, since an extra layer of wavering hardly registered over his bright features. Sans lowered his hand and pressed it against the countertop, where its shaking wasn’t as noticeable. He prepared to laugh the whole thing off and found he’d made a mistake, because he couldn’t bear to look his friend in the eyes and lie.

* welp. knew i shouldn’t have come here. nothin’ gets by you, huh, grillby?

The jukebox in the corner fell silent, its steady stream of quarters having finally ceased. Only the light crackle of flames filled the air. Sans looked away, taking in the bar’s emptiness for the first time.

* sometimes i can’t even remember what i’m supposed to be sad about. how’s that for a joke?

He’d chased the memories around his skull for days on end, but the more desperately he grasped for them, the faster they seemed to crumble into dust. And yet, they refused to leave, preferring to haunt the edges of his thoughts and dreams. The fingers of his left hand wrapped themselves into a fist hovering inches above the wooden surface.

* ok, but you’re the one he’s attached at the hipbone too. couldn’t you, i dunno, train him to be your royal guard dog or something?

With the dog out of the way, he crossed over to the trash can and scraped blacked lumps out of the pan.

He absentmindedly scratched between the dog’s ears, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of its head. “SHE IS PRETTY CUTE, BUT… I WOULD WORRY ABOUT HER GETTING HURT.”

He looked at the failed experiment. “WHAT WERE YOU TRYING TO MAKE?”

Frisk froze when they heard a voice. They raised a brow before turning around and seeing a skeleton. 

‘Another monster?’ They thought before signing to the skeleton, ‘I fell from the ruins.’ And that was all they signed, nothing more.

The meaning of the child’s motions jumped immediately into Sans’s mind, although he couldn’t for the life of him remember how or when he’d learned a language in hands. While not talking, the human seemed to hear him fine, so he continued to speak.

WHEN DID YOUR BLOG REACH ITS PEAK? I guess I was probably the most active in the beginning of January. I tapered off from there until I took my four-month hiatus.


WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO GET A TUMBLR? I’d been stalking a few blogs and decided to make one of my own in order to save art/posts that I really liked. Ended up stumbling on the Welcome to Night Vale RP community, then made this blog after I finished playing Undertale for the second time.

DO YOU GET ASKS ON A DAILY BASIS? Ahaha no. But I’m not even here on a daily basis, so I can’t really complain.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR URL? The premise for my particular Sans is that he vaguely remembers previous saves and resets, and has to work with these feelings of déjà vu all the time. I also found out that DejaVu Sans is a font, which sealed the deal.
