(In the far corner of the store, there were faint sobs and muttering. A girl was sitting behind a display, her arms wrapped around her and her legs held close.)

'Huh..?'
Setsuko paused, slowly following the noise. She hadn't realized there was someone else in here.
She carefully peeked from behind a shelf, eyes widening at the sight of a girl curled up in the corner.
Someone else was here. And she was alive.
Setsuko coughed awkwardly, "Hey, are you- you okay...?"
(The girl fliched at the sound of Setsuko’s voice. She looked up teary-eyed before averting her gaze.)
“Y-yes, I’m okay— Mn, t-thank you…”
[Setsuko glanced back to check on Hikari and Daisuke, who were trying to fit a bunch of soda cans into the latter's bag. She turned away, focusing her gaze on Niko and walking closer.]
"You sure? Uh.."
[Not knowing what else to do, Setsuko looked at a granola bar in her hand and tossed it Niko's way, the snack sliding in front of her feet.]
"What's your name?" [She asked.]
“O-oh, thank you… It’s Niko… Dejima Niko…”
(She took the bar, looking up and nodding as a sign of thanks briefly before quickly averting her gaze once again.)
“Oh, right, uhm, a-and you are?”
"Miyawaki Setsuko. Nice to meet you."
[Setsuko flashed a smile and nodded back. She wasn't expecting to see someone else here, but it was good to know that there were more survivors.]
[Speaking of surviving...]
"Hey, do you want to stick around with us?" [Setsuko asked, gesturing towards Daisuke and Hikari.] "Those guys back there are my sister and cousin. If you want, we can try to find a safe place to stay together."
”Hm? O-oh, well… I— Hm…”
(She paused, fiddling with her fingers.)
“I’m… not sure how much help I’d be.” (She looked down at the ground, her legs coming closer towards herself.)
“But… If I can, I’d like to…”
"Don't worry about that, having more people right now is more than enough."
[Setsuko beckoned for Niko to stand,] "Come, I'll introduce you to the others. It's just those two."
(Niko stood up, her legs shaking like a newborn deer. Her eyes stayed on the floor as she wiped the tears off her face and nodded signaling she was ready.)
[Setsuko made her way to Hikari and Daisuke, turning around to check if Niko was following her.]
"Guys," [She called out, catching both their attention.] "I found someone."
"This is Niko," [Setsuko introduced the girl behind her, before nodding towards the brown-haired boy.] "This is Daisuke-"
"-And this is my sister, Hikari." [While Daisuke held up a hand to wave, Setsuko moved to gesture at the young girl beside him. Hikari stared at Niko in awe, smiling brightly as she pointed at her.]
"I like your hair!"
(Niko seemed startled by the sudden compliment.)
“Oh, uhm, thank you..! It’s nice to meet you both!”
"Nice to meet you too," [Daisuke replied. He quickly shoved the rest of the soda cans into his bag, pushing them inside as he zipped it closed and slung it around his back.]
"We should probably go now," [He said, pulling on the straps, Hikari batted at them lightly, poking her finger through one of the holes.] "I think we got enough stuff. And if we need anything later, we can always look for more."
“O-okay… Are we going somewhere?”
[Setsuko shrugged.] "Probably? I think it's best to just... find somewhere with the least bugs that we can."
“R-right, of course.. That would make sense…”
[Setsuko glanced outside. Groups of small insects and large mutations swarmed the streets, blood caked on the asphalt and concrete. None of them had locked onto the convenience store yet, but if they stayed in here for too long, she feared that fleeting safety would change.]
"Alright. We can just sneak around them until we have to run, right-?"
(Niko nodded despite not being too sure herself.)
“Good… Good idea.”
[Setsuko glanced at Daisuke, who slowly inched towards the door. There was a windchime above it that jingled every time it opened. Something like that surely would..]
"..Let's just make a run for it when we get out of here." [He offered.]
[Setsuko bit her lip. She didn't know how this would go, and even if she hated to admit it- the situation was scary. She didn't want to be scared, but the thought of being out there with those creatures was terrifying.]
[Still, there was nothing else to do but try. They had to get out of here.]
"Daisuke, do you have your knife?"
"I do," [Daisuke held up a steak knife.]
"..Okay."
[At least they had a weapon.]
[Setsuko looked at Niko,] "Are you ready?"
(Niko nodded.)
“Will… she be..?” (She asked, gesturing towards Hikari.)
"Ah.."
[Setsuko turned around, looking down at Hikari. The girl was fiddling with her collar, glancing between the door and her sister. She looked up at Setsuko, biting her lip.]
“I can run.” [Hikari stated, nodding with a smidge of confidence. In all honesty, Hikari hadn't fully grasped the situation just yet. Or maybe she had, and was trying to be as brave as she could about it. Either way, she didn't want to weigh anyone down.]
[Setsuko bit her lip, taking a deep breath.] "Tell me when you get tired," [She offered.] "I'll carry you. Okay?"
"Okay!" [She saluted playfully. It didn't do much to lift the tension in the air.]
[Still, it was better than nothing. Setsuko smiled.]
(Niko prepared herself to run, breathing in and out slowly. She hadn’t needed to run for a long time. In fact she hardly got outside. She couldn’t afford to panic now not now of all times. Not when there were three others with her… Not when her life was on the line…)
(Niko shook her head. She couldn’t think about that now!!!!! All she had to do… was run.)
(In the far corner of the store, there were faint sobs and muttering. A girl was sitting behind a display, her arms wrapped around her and her legs held close.)

Huh..? W-what? I don’t.. understand… I’m sorry!
(In the far corner of the store, there were faint sobs and muttering. A girl was sitting behind a display, her arms wrapped around her and her legs held close.)
@dejima-niko
