I think this is literally the exact wrong takeaway of this. The takeaway is that people *do* care, they *do* want to change things and take action to that effect, and they *can* be convinced of the morality of an issue.

But they aren’t going to *take action* unless you can convince them the action is useful.

Because duh.

If you want people to take action on things which are daunting, find actions which are eminently doable and convince them to do those with you. Then it’s easier to convince them that their actions can change things.

it really drives me up the wall how people want to view male privilege as a binary yes/no question for trans men. there are options beyond "every single trans man has inherent male privilege from the moment he realizes he's trans, or even from the moment he's born, and therefore never experiences misogyny" and "trans men never ever access male privilege because of their poor victim afab status." and it's actually different for every single trans man because guess what! shit's complicated!

kai, who is 15 and just bought a binder and his parents think it's a silly phase and he's in a red state where politicians writing laws about whether he can chop off his beautiful womanly breasts

joe, who is in his 40s and entirely stealth and has a wife and two daughters

oliver, who is 22 and on hrt and passes pretty well, but is still legally female and is read as female in some contexts

sarah, who is 30 and in a conservative environment where he's forced to be a housewife and mother and doesn't exactly know he's trans, just that he wishes he was born a man

and so many other trans men because every single one of us is a unique individual with a unique relationship to male privilege

and it's not that trans men can't have male privilege. joe certainly does, though he would likely lose some of that privilege if he were outed. oliver is probably privileged in a lot of everyday ways, like not being catcalled or getting taken more seriously at work, but is still very much subject to more structural forms of misogyny. and there are ways in which trans men are privileged over our trans sisters. our capacity for privilege is something to be aware of, not something to instinctively deny.

but also, for non trans men, listen to us when we talk about our experiences not being treated like men and not having male privilege. listen to us when we talk about our experiences with misogyny (crucially, without treating us like being subject to misogyny makes us Honorary Women)

there's balance! there's nuance! shit's complicated!

Also, also, even if Joe currently has male privilege, he likely still grew up being catcalled as a woman, men commenting on his breasts when he was a teen, was very likely raped multiple times, statistically speaking, either 'correctively' or just in general, until some point before his 40's when he started to pass enough to be stealth. This is all true. People should, and many people do, do work that benefits others for no benefit to themselves, because this is the right thing to do.

However, in practical terms, this is another example of People Will Not Just. If your movement relies on large groups of people Just Doing [thing that does not directly benefit them], your movement is fucked.

Your options, if you want real change and not just moral purity, are to show people how it does in fact benefit them, or be so loud, and so annoying, and so inconvenient, that supporting you in order to make you Stop That Already will register as a tangible benefit to the people who Will Not Just.

We're also up in the realm of theory, here.

Feminism is an idea and a philosophy. Feminists are the people who go out and do those ideas. Alright, fine, you've made a ring-fence around your definition of feminism to say that the discussion of men and feminism is not one you care about. It's bizarre that you'd do that, but fine.

But feminists have fought for and supported and pushed for causes that benefit men primarily and only secondarily benefit women, or whose benefit for women is difficult to even articulate directly. You're not defending feminism against some new idea, some threat of men shoving themselves into the equation, men are just naturally going to be a part of that equation when you're looking at real-world scenarios. You're trying to propose a new standard that has never really worked for feminism before.

It's not just "men who want to join feminism Will Not Just", it's "if you have a bunch of people who care very deeply about gender discrimination, they will end up considering the benefits to men of their policies, because of course they will." The women also Will Not Just. Nobody Will Just.

Very few feminists find it possible to only care about women when it comes to their feminism, because most of them aren't sexist. Unless you believe men have zero real problems, the only way you can care about only the impact on women when it comes to changing society is if you hold sexist beliefs, thinking women are inherently more weak and vulnerable. And to come back up to theory, that's... not going to lead to good feminism. That's going to lead to segregation/secessionist feminism, both of which suck and don't offer any real progress.

Sure their natural ability to go into stasis for long periods of time as part of their hunting and survival strategies is great for genetically engineering hybrid humans so they can be put into stasis for extremely long-distance space travel. Sure they're stopped by crucifixes because a flaw in their fuckign. Multidimensional hyperanalytical predator thought processes makes their minds bluescreen when they try to comprehend right angles. Why not.

They have to take mind-dampening drugs to go out in public. In the lab they're kept in oblong rooms where the lighting is designed to not create right angled shadows. It's a whole big thing and probably a big part of why they went extinct, humans fucking love making rectangles.

My favorite part was how the displays indicating the ships systems statuses were represented as human faces bearing subtle emotional changes as various parameters increased - the predator perception was so attuned to displays of fear and anger that the vampires could comprehend the gestalt of the ship (and notice deviances) without consciously processing it.

That bit is actually science. They're called Chernoff Faces. It's not predator perception that relies on, it's human social perception, of which vampires have very little need but still possess nearly the same capacity for as a remnant of such a recent split from humans evolutionarily.

Yep, the idea being that for them to safely enter a human house, they would have to close their eyes, meaning that effectively the only good way for a vampire to enter the home of a human is to have their permission to be there, otherwise they'll literally be fighting blind.
