    “did they close earlier than usual?” kyle glanced around the darkened and nearly barren street which only added to his confusion, it was the weekend, wasn’t it? people were supposed to be out drinking, partying, laughing, something. “did i miss the memo?” 

“It’s 4am dude,” Xavier informed the funny man, who he assumed was telling some sort of joke that was flying up and away and over his head right now. For as bustling a hub as Santo could be, there were some hours that stretched where just hanging around was an invitation for interaction with unsightly characters. 

( It doesn’t even register to him that he may be the very weirdo to be avoided in this scenario. ) 

“Anyone out wandering passed three is usually an oddball. ‘Cept me, I just can’t sleep. What’s your excuse?”

“Not to me personally, no, but I know quite a few who do.” Lenny pauses in the doorframe, hands on her hips. “…were you looking for something, Teller?”

“No.” His answer is quick, too quick. Instinctual rather than truthful. Xavier was always looking for something -- an escape, the next high. What he didn’t seek at present was trouble, and crossing paths with Lenny always felt akin to traipsing a field of landmines for him. 

“Unless you’re offering something.” 

There it was, right on cue, that same weakness that had dictated his life since his teens. The source didn’t matter as long as he got what he needed.

The roll of his eyes is playful at worst, she most likely wasn’t alluding to his stint as a calendar model but the remark certainly takes him back to that rather regrettable attempt at good favour within the department. 

“One hundred percent, really? That’s very definitive. Though I guess me even thinking that probably makes me fickle. Well, shit.” With that he lifts his coffee to his lips and takes a gulp, no sugar and no cream -- just how he liked it.
