massage or ice !
𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐅𝐎𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐀𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒- ( 𝐈𝐂𝐄 ) ; one muse holds an ice pack to the other’s injury.
Bo winced as Grace gently pressed the ice pack against the swelling around his left eye, letting out an exaggerated hiss through his teeth. “Easy there, Little Sparrow,” he grumbled, the old nickname slipping out as naturally as breathing, the same one he’d called her since they were courting because she always seemed to flutter around the shop, fixing everything he overlooked. “You’d think I was the one tryin’ to rob the place.”
A crooked smile tugged at the corner of his bruised mouth despite the ache. “Fella figured he’d make off with our register. Turns out he could throw a punch better than he could count.” He chuckled dryly, though the laugh ended with another quiet groan as Grace adjusted the ice. “You don’t gotta look at me like that. I won…mostly.”
His hand found hers, gently keeping it against his face a moment longer. The teasing softened into something more sincere. “Truth is…” Bo sighed, his thumb brushing across her knuckles. “I don’t rightly know what I’d do without you, Little Sparrow. I’d probably be sittin’ back there bleedin’ on the floor, tellin’ folks the other fella oughta see the doctor instead.”
He shook his head with an affectionate smile, eyes lingering on her. “Good thing you had the sense to marry me ‘cause Lord knows I wasn’t born with any of it.”
❝ Hey, now — stay still. ❞
There was always an underlying austerity in Grace’s tone no matter the circumstance: this one was no different than any other … yet, the mien of her furrowed brows shifted from stern to concerned as she pressed the tatty bag of ice deeper into his brow-bone. Bloodshed and bruises weren’t a regular occurrence behind the doors of Delta Grocery. Not that Grace would let that happen in a million years anyway — but, whenever trouble did arise, Mrs. Chow would always be there to tend to her charming fool of a husband.
Bo’s jab at the incident had elicited nothing but a sharp glare and a tongue click from the woman, but she continues to circle the ice pack softly over his inflamed eye. Even while hurt, he always had a sense of humor; as a young girl she tried her best to understand it. After years, she still wondered how the grocery-man could keep his spirits during tough times, but to say she wasn’t irrevocably endeared by his attitude would be a lie. She’d always been.
And as her endlessly-racing mind finally wandered off to somewhere more peaceful — somewhere with him — large hands touched her calloused ones with compassion , causing Grace to gaze at the man upon her. ❝ But’cha had the sense to ask, silly man. ❞ the corners of rounded lips bloom into a warm smile before her free hand dipped two fingers into a jar of Tiger Balm and tenderly rubbed it over Bo’s bruise.
❝ … You lucky ‘m fixin’ you up ‘stead of roughin’ up your other eye. ❞ she jokes, a chuckle escaping her mouth. With such affection, Grace presses a kiss against his temple near where he’d been hit. ❝ Got me all worried whenever you get into trouble. ❞
