i cannot stop thinking about the literal night-and-day change of susie's behavior between chapters. can you imagine being alphys or noelle or ANYONE in class when she walks in the next morning on-time and with a kick in her step that she probably doesn't even notice. she gets someone's attention by making a loud noise and TALKS to them!! she cracks a joke in class and she's the only one who laughs at it and she laughs REALLY HARD!!! and then you walk out of class and she's playing bully again but then she drops it in less than a beat because she can hardly contain how excited she is to see her new friend again!!!!!! gaahhh!!!!!!!

Ultimately "nobody gets to choose who they are in this world" and "your choices don't matter" are purposefully fatalistic statements implemented as optimistic themes. The point isn't that you shouldn't try or there's no hope, the point is that you can't destroy yourself trying to become someone you're not bc you feel like you can't be loved as the person you are, and instead must learn to accept yourself for you and find other people who will do the same

Berdly and Susie serve as two perfect examples of these themes in action. Berdly convinces himself that he's unmemorable and unlovable so he becomes obsessed with becoming someone he isn't, making him miserable, insecure and isolated. Meanwhile Susie is convinced that the person she is makes her unlovable and views if as a personal failing she has to resign herself to, lashing out against people who try to get close. Susie finds hope when she finds people who stick by her and love her because of who she is and not in spite of it, and Berdly finds hope when he learns that nobody actually cares about the persona he's forced himself into and he doesn't have to carry that burden anymore.
