At Chase’s joke, Janie rolled her eyes, though a wide smile still managed to make its way onto her face. “Boo,” she heckled, picking up a noodle and flicking it at him, laughing as she did so.”I should try to come over more often, though. It gets lonely at my place sometimes.”
Trying to dodge the noodle and failing, it hit Chase’s shoulder and flopped to the floor ---- which caused an excited stir from the dogs, all trying to get at it at once. Letting out a chuckle at the sudden uproar, he shook his head before looking back up to Janie. “Now look what you’ve done, you stirred up these beasts.” Reaching over to the carton of noodles, he plucked a few out with his fingers before tossing them in Janie’s direction, which resulted in his pack scurring over to her for the apparent flying food.
Will you ever tell Janie about what you do?
ask my muse a question and i can only respond with a gif ;;

The red, white, and blue lights that flashed in front of the church caused Nani’s heart to clench as she made her way towards the building. Looking at the way police were keeping the bystanders at a distance, she couldn’t help but grab out her phone to read the text Chase had sent. Why would he want her here when obviously something bad was going down? Something that even the police weren’t able to completely handle except to stand around like idiots. “Two people died just stepping out of there,” Nani overheard as she pushed her way to the front of the roped off perimeter. Died? Chase? She couldn’t see anything except the glare of the lights flashing and uniformed men walking around to make sure no one got past.
They weren’t doing anything. “Is this a hostage situation?” Nani heard someone call out. “In a church?” “Who would stoop so low?” The questions were thrumming in and out of her ears as people continued to pierce the night with their questions. Meanwhile, all Nani could do was stare at the doors to the old church. Chase’s church. Selecting his name and putting the phone up to her ear, her heart dropped. All that was on the other line was static.
Stepping underneath the rope, Nani moved swiftly–so much so that it took until she hit the first step before someone grabbed her arm. “Ma’am you’re not allowed to go in there,” the officer said–his voice gruff as he pulled her backwards. “You-you don’t understand..,” she returned, trying with all her might to break his hold. “I need to get in there. My…” At that she broke off. Something inside her clenched as she tried to figure out what to call Chase. Were they even on that level? “My boyfriend’s in there.” She let her had swing–blindly connecting with his nose and breaking it. She was going to feel bad for it late but she took the advantage of his distracted hands to run up to the doors.
Bursting inside, Nani stopped dead in her tracks, her breath suddenly caught in her throat. There was no way this was what she was seeing. Blinking, the color drained from her face. “Chase?”
“Te rogamus, audi nos! Ut inimicos sanctae circulae humiliare digneris ---- te rogamus, audi nos!”
Chase announced the Latin prayer with a strong tone, one that empowered the entire room and belittled the demon that had latched itself to one of the innocent church goers. It was a mid-day service that luckily, the exorcist decided to attend. Had he not, there’s no telling what would have happened ---- though one life was already lost, he was determined to protect all of the others that were locked in the church with him.
“Terribilis Deus Sanctuario suo ---- cernunnos ipse truderit virtutem plebi Suae, aradia ipse fortitudinem plebi Suae!”
With the help of three other men, they were able to restrain the vessel the demon had clung to. Though laughing uncontrollably, no other bystander showed a smile. This thing was pushing the limits, and it had Chase devastatingly concerned that the man the creature had control of wouldn’t make it through ---- for at that moment, tears of blood came streaming from its eyes. The laughter continued.
Just as Chase was about to continue with the prayer, the presence of Nani in the corner of his eye had him double taking. His expression fell, which caused the demon to rear up, its laughter getting louder ---- emanating through the church like a curse. He couldn’t stop now, not even to tell Nani to stay back, for if his prayer was split it would loose all effect.
Though before he could get the next line out, the demon rose its dark and demanding voice. “Found your little bitch, found your little bitch!” It screeched through its laughter, the skin of the possessed man paled and became veiny, tones of dark purple and black worming their way through his blood. “Your little bitch that God hates!” His laugh echoed, most eyes of the bystanders then falling on Nani.
Sitting that the table, across from Chase, Janie picked up various containers one by one, putting a little bit of the food from each on her plate. At the man’s suggestion, she smiled and took one of the egg rolls, immediately taking a bite out of it. “There are good,” she mumbled with a full mouth, nodding her head. The blonde took another one and set both of them down on her plate before picking up her chopsticks are carefully picking up some noodles and popping them into her mouth. “I miss havin’ dinner with you,” she said, swallowing her food.
Smiling at her approval, Chase brought the container back and put one on his plate, along with some lo mein. As reclusive as he could be, he really did love the company of others, especially Janie. “You should stop by more often, I have it every night,” he joked, picking up his chopsticks to gather a bundle of noodles.
The familiar bark of the dogs comforted Nani, if only for a moment. She couldn’t help but love the animals that brought some measure of comfort to the man that she had come to be so close too. She tried to keep her breathing calm as she waited for Chase to answer her knock–but she couldn’t help her the speed of her heart as she heard the footsteps come closer.
As the door opened, Nani looked up and gave him a weak smile. Stepping back as she felt the droplets of water hit her leg from the shaking dog, the dark haired woman set the box in her arms down to the ground. “It’s fine. I’ve got some presents in the box for them…and one for you. Belated Christmas gift. Really belated.” Her words came out rushed, and while she wanted to calm down her nerves she couldn’t seem to stop talking. “I’m sorry..for not…for not calling.”
“You got them gifts?” Chase smiled. Nani always had a way of bringing light into his life, and the simple, kind gesture of her bringing goodies for his pack lifted his spirits. “You don’t have to apologize, I’ve been unreachable for a while...” he admitted, his smile dying down a bit. “I should have reached out--” he stopped, wondering if it was even his place to reach out in the first place, especially after what had happened on Halloween. Crouching down to pick up the box, he rose with a question -- a hint of hopefulness in his voice. “Do you want to come in? I was about to make some coffee...”
( @janie-edison )
Chinese takeout covered the kitchen table, which inevitably left each of Chase’s dogs sitting not too far away ---- individually creating their own pools of saliva. Glancing over to them, he perked a brow and gave them all a look that silently said you better not come any closer with that mess of drool. Looking back to Janie, Chase lifted the container of egg rolls and passed them over to her. “Try these, they’re the best around.”
Nani stood out front of Chase’s door, her teeth pulling at her bottom lip as stared at it. She had considered just leaving the box filled with miscellaneous packages–one for Chase and the rest for his dogs–on his front porch and leaving. She hadn’t really seen him since that night and the fact that they’d barely spoken through text or phone calls hurt her even more so. Closing her eyes, she took a deep breath–her hand coming up and rapping on the door, in time with her exhale.
Without a doubt, Chase was becoming his father. That antisocial behavior getting the better of him, his work and studies interfering with the important relationships that he truly needed ---- and more so, the guilt of it all eating away at him slowly. And perhaps that only encouraged him to become reclusive, knowing what a man like him could do to others.
Naturally, the dogs were the first to respond to the knocking at the door. Excitedly they scurried to the foyer, only to pounce over each other to look out the door’s window or the one to the left, pushing the curtains away. It was a mystery how they were still up and not shredded to bits. It took Chase a little longer to get to the door, as he was upstairs at the time washing mud off of Milo. The wet lab hurried along beside him down the stairs, and when Chase actually worked through the pile of dogs to open the door, Milo gave a merciless shake that sprayed everyone in the vicinity with Meadow Grass scented droplets of water.
“Nani----” he began, pushing the pack back. It was clear they were full of energy, most likely due to the lack of activity around the house. “I’m so sorry, they’re----” pausing, he squeezed his way out of the door and shut it to block them from parading around them. Last thing he wanted was for Nani to be knocked off her feet. “...a little rowdy.”

Chase: Please come to the church as soon as possible
He’s beautiful.
“Thank you -- all of them are, really.” Chase offered a quick smile to his opposite, his fingers snapping together softly in order to get the dog’s attention. When Jasper complied and quickly made his way to his side, the exorcist glanced back up to Aaron in silence.
“Alright,” Janie called back, making her way past the dogs and joining Chase in the kitchen. She looked at him, a wide grin immediately forming on her features. “So, I made it into school,” she announced as if she hadn’t told him earlier over text. “Isn’t that great?”
Greeting Janie with a smile, Chase rounded the table with arms open before he took her into a tight hug. “You have no idea how proud I am,” he replied, loosening his grip only to mess with her hair a bit before pulling away. He was in a particularly good mood, and Janie’s news only boosted the feeling. “This is the start of something great for you, I can tell,” he continued, moving back around the table to fetch his wallet from the other end.
…I’m afraid there isn’t just a single book on this house’s history, no. But I can refer you to some general texts… or a few newspaper clippings, if you wish. Unfortunately not the more recent ones, but…
Interesting...
I would appreciate that.
It was difficult to keep the smile from her face at Chase’s response. It was amazing how genuine he seemed and Nani couldn’t help but feel slightly comforted. He had always seemed passionate about the work he did–even though she had only thought he worked for the church–it was something that had drawn her to him. Sure she still had her worries–exorcism was a scary thing to her, but something inside her quieted and new faith replaced it. Moving up, her weight on the table, her fingers traced his jawline–and without any warning, she kissed him.
The smile that graced Nani’s expression put Chase at ease, his uncertainty slowly but surely washing away. Eyes following her as she moved up, what followed had taken him by surprise. He had collected a fair amount of reactions from others when he told them the truth, but this... was a first. With her sweet lips upon his, the exorcist moved his hands up her arms to her shoulders, moving into the gesture for a brief moment before breaking the kiss, dark green hues searched hers curiously, though no words were spoken. Truth be told, he wasn’t sure what to say, or if anything needed to be said for that matter.

About a half hour later, just like she said, Janie showed up at Chase’s house. She knocked a couple times to let him know she was there before just opening up the door and stepping inside. “Chase, I’m here!” She called before some of the dogs came from seemingly out of nowhere to greet her. “Hey, guys,” she said to them with a smile, bending down to pet them as she waited for Chase.
Chase was in the kitchen, eyes set down to an article he’d been meaning to read that his father had sent him through the mail about a week ago -- regarding the successful exorcism of an elderly woman named Agata Katsaros. He’d been so engulfed in the story that he lost track of time, and when he heard Janie calling from the living room his gaze popped up from the newspaper clipping and he made his was to stand shortly thereafter. “I’m in here,” he called out, sliding most of the papers on the table into a folder.

Janie: Okay, we'll do ice cream! I'll meet you @ your place in like a half hour, if that's alright?
Chase: Sounds good, see you then.
