Jonathan Joss was an Indigenous, gay man who was murdered on the first day of Pride month as well as Indigenous History Month. He died protecting his trans husband. Homophobia and racism aren’t marks of the past, and this is a heart breaking reminder of that.

This is also going to happen with state lotteries.

If you're like me, you might occasionally throw a buck at the lottery. You know your odds are shit, but it is, very literally, just a couple bucks. I think the most I've spent on the lottery in any given year was $25 and it was because I kept winning $5 on a $5 scratcher so I figured I'd keep going until I either lost, or won more than $5.

This isn't a problem. Once in awhile it's fun to daydream. What is a problem is that you're going to start seeing people insisting there's a way to predict the lottery, and they'll teach you--for a fee, of course, on top of the cost of tickets. You'll see a lot of new scratchers. You'll see people pretending they're the official lottery.

I used to work for a gas station, so I'm going to tell you for free how to predict the lottery:

You can't.

That's it. There is no way to predict the lottery. There was in a couple of states for a brief time in the 1980s because of the equipment they used to draw numbers, but they changed out the equipment when this imbalance was discovered. The closest you can get is that when a new scratcher comes out, the odds will be slightly better because they want people to start thinking that particular scratcher is "lucky." But the prizes with the better odds? Yeah, they're like $1-5. You're not going to do any better at a jackpot just because the game is new, and when I say the odds are "slightly" better, that's exactly what I mean: slightly. I never tried to track specific statistics or anything, but we're talking maybe a 5% rise in odds for prizes that more or less cover the cost of the ticket. You're not really winning--you just think you are.

So by all means, grab a Powerball ticket for fun on your birthday. But watch yourself. Because one on your birthday can too easily turn into one a week...one a day....ah, hell, let's make it two.... and the next thing you know you're flushing fifty or sixty bucks (or more) per week on lotto tickets, and the clerk isn't allowed to tell you no.

Don't think you can game the system. You can't. Don't think there's a formula. There isn't. Don't think that shiny new game will help you. It won't. And don't think it can't happen to you. It can.

No, I'm never going to say "well yes he shouldn't have called you a slur, but hitting him back was just as bad!" Because it isn't. You don't get to inflict violence on a group and then expect them to be Held Above responding to it. You don't start fights and then say that it's a problem that someone fought back.

yesterday a visiting undergrad came into my work and was telling me about how she's doing her undergrad research project about lichens even though no one at her university studies or even knows very much about them. heartwarming to know that there are young people choosing the lichen lifestyle even though it is a difficult and often lonely road 🔥💪💯💵

Making it happen (lichens) in the face of adversity (no lichens). That's the kind of badassery I like to hear about! Praying to the lichen gods on her behalf that the lichen life treats her kindly and all of her dreams come true.

Incredibly violent take of mine but I actually don’t think you need to relate to a story in any way to enjoy it. You can enjoy a story even if you can’t point at a character and insert some aspect of your personality or identity into them. In fact I would argue the need for a character like that to be present in every single story you experience is a sign of stunted growth.
