Oh boy. What a loaded question (not really). Rhys glanced around for anything with which to make himself useful and grabbed a wooden plank off the ground. Close enough.
He glanced between the thugs and decided that scanning one of them was worth the risk; there was no way the Hyperion database would have had anything on these mooks, but his ECHO-eye was still semi-functional. “Um, uhh…” Within a matter of seconds, his cybernetic eye had pulled up a brief bio on the man in the middle. There was a quip or two about his weight and his feminine birth name (replaced by some cliched pseudonym like “Fist”) but also a note about a physical injury the man had sustained some while ago.
“That guy, front and center, go for his left knee. Limb’s not fully healed after sustaining a fracture,” - he yelped as they were fired upon - “That’s all I got!”
But no, Rhys could not fight. Not very well. Not until he stopped panicking and had a chance to use his wits. Maybe if the other cyborg dude could even their odds a little, he’d be of more use than some annoying gnat in his ear.
✖ – HIS NOSE TWITCHED when he saw the other pick up a plank from the street. Well, at least he was being useful (to a point). It seemed more like he was only trying to appear useful rather than be of use, however. If he couldn’t fight, then what was the use of finding excuses to answer his question? (...Not like a wooden plank could do much damage, anyway.)
However, Genos’s opinion soon shifted at hearing the man’s advice.
“That guy, front and center, go for his left knee. Limb’s not fully healed after sustaining a fracture.”
Ah, so he was more of the observational type. He could work with that.
“Got it.”
Clenching his fists, the cyborg lunged forward, swinging his leg around and toward the thug’s left knee. With a large and painful crack!, the impact left the poor man yelping in pain, toppling over while clutching his leg -- just as the stranger had predicted. Not bad.
The thug (that was currently on the ground rolling in pain, mind you) left the others speechless. The “guy in the front and center” -- as the stranger described it -- appeared to be their leader. The gang looked toward Genos, mouths agape, then toward the man behind him. Back to Genos. Back to the man. As if to say they were unsure to continue the fight or to run away. After all, they were facing a man with a deadly eye for detail and another with arms that could, as Genos had hoped, still pack a punch.
“If you don’t leave, he,” the cyborg hooked a finger back to the stranger behind him, “will be able to tell which of you has the smallest dick. If I were you, I would get a move on it.”
A snort escaped from her lips.
“At least you’re not like that guy. He hardly needed to replace everything, bit by bit. I hated working with him; he sucked out all the fun, you know? A real killjoy. You’re not a killjoy, too, are you?”
✖ – With the stranger’s words, Genos’s curiosity grew as to what the girl did for a job in particular.
“Maybe not a killjoy per se, but I’ve been told I can be ‘too serious.’” He shrugged. “What did you do for for that guy? He sounds like a real asshole.” He could go for a little story; the people here had such fascinating lives.
Shin-Ah looked back to the other, surprised that the man was being polite. He had thought the other was angry, but that was no longer the case. It put the seiryuu at ease, though he did look back to the tub of ice cream as the other spoke.
It was true that Shin-Ah did not like the cold, so perhaps the man was right. After all, eating something as cold as this might leave him with a chill, and he didn’t like the thought of that one bit.
Giving him a nod, Shin-Ah handed the ice cream back to him. Since they would find something else for him, and since the man had his eyes on it first, it was only right for Shin-Ah to give the man back his ice cream.
“…okay,” he said, his tone soft. Despite his silence and attire, the seiryuu was rather kind and gentle. Soft, as Ao put it, just like the tone of voice in which he spoke.
✖ – HE BLINKED. WHILE he hadn’t expected the stranger to give him the ice cream, the gesture was appreciated nonetheless. As he noted however, if the man didn’t like cold things to begin with, it didn’t make much sense for him to keep the dessert.
So, taking the ice cream into his grasp and murmuring a small ‘thank you,’ Genos sent a small nod to the other. “Alright. Let’s start with something basic: is there a particular candy that you like?”
Per hinted by his attire, the stranger didn’t seem to be one to come from the present. Genos wasn’t even sure if the guy would know what he wanted -- would he even know what chocolate was? -- but he was willing to sit and find something that he would like. After all, he was rather rude to him.
That said, he corrected his inquiry, “Or... let’s start with something even more basic: what kind of flavors do you like? Sweet, sour...?”
Error 404 [intro/open]
⌧ — At the sound of a voice speaking out behind him, the teen tensed, head turning ever so slightly so that he could glance out of the corner of his eyes towards the stranger.
For a moment he would stand there, his posture shifting ever so slightly; for a moment he seemed almost like he would teleport once again, intending on avoiding interaction at all. But he hesitated, turning away once again without a word as he pulled his sword back to his side.
In what seemed like forever, he felt uncertainty rise in his gut. Again he was reminded that this was neither the Datascape nor the world from which his real self was from, and this stranger was something unknown, a being that he had no information on whatsoever. The tides of his anger wavered, and he felt a shiver run down his spine.
It was an odd feeling to be substantial again.
“Not that this would be any use anyway.” He muttered, lifting the sword up in front of him once again, staring at the simple craftsmanship of the weapon. However he was surprised to see barely a dent where he struck the railing.
“This thing is barely fit for a spar, let alone a fight for my life if it came to it.” He sighed, letting his arm drop once again before turning to the other person once again, fully facing them for the first time.
“Honestly, today’s been pretty shitty anyway. There are worse ways to vent it than breaking a stupid toy.”
✖ – “AH. I AGREE.” His eyes shifted to the stranger’s wooden sword. Sad how the scientists replaced whatever weapon they had before, as they seemed to be an adept fighter -- correct posture and everything. A wooden sword was the farthest from appropriate weapon the scientists could have given the individual, but then again, they took away his arms and replaced them with plastic. They were overall uncaring people, stealing weapons and forcing people to survive in an unfamiliar city. Ruthless. Insulting.
“Honestly, today’s been pretty shitty anyway. There are worse ways to vent it than breaking a stupid toy.”
“Then why don’t you stop?” It was a simple question. Yes, Genos had acknowledged that they had in fact ceased their sword-beating, but as he mentioned: there were other ways to vent frustration. Most of which included a smaller likelihood of receiving splinters. “It’s already been a shitty day. Don’t make it worse by breaking your only weapon.”
He turned his attention to the other’s face, eyes squinting the slightest. All he could see was the bottom half of their face -- who (or what) they were was a mystery. Ah, but most people here were. He had received his own fair share of odd stares because of his eyes.
“At this hour monsters begin to appear throughout the city. You’ll need something to defend yourself with.”
Chrome was still shaken over that little encounter. She was thankful enough that he didn’t leap at her for the screw. She could have defended herself if she was fully prepared. The girl gave out a huge sigh, easing up her nerves. It’s best if she’s careful around him. She noted that this person can be quite dangerous if not careful.
“I’ve been here for a while…” She’s quite familiar with the last three Sectors in the city. It’s probably because of the fact that it’s possibly the most peaceful than the first three. But that doesn’t make it an immune to trouble. It’s better there than Sector Three and Two, anyways. That’s what she heard, at least.
“D-Do you need help with something…?”
✖ – HE SIGHED. HE hated asking for favors, but jesus did he need to get his arm fully functional again. Plus, add on the fact that he was in a completely unfamiliar city and... yeah. It was pretty safe to say that Genos was embarrassed requesting the girl’s help. To be unable to so much as bend your arm would be a greater inconvenience than you would expect.
“Could you show me where the nearest repair shop is? Or at least point me to the right direction.” The response was short and blunt. He really didn’t want to drag on what he needed. “As you can see, I’ve just arrived. I don’t know a thing about this city, so if you could help me, that would be... greatly appreciated.”
First he scared her, and now he was asking for help? Talk about a new low. But to help shake the tension between them, the cyborg quickly added, “My name is Genos, by the way.”
and one day I will beat you fair & square

The thing about imitating assholes who owned entire planets was that unless you had the same resources and reputation to back your giant fucking mouth, it was probably a better idea to keep your head low and your lips zipped. Lesson learned: Rhys was fleeing from a couple of thugs who were packing heat and none too pleased with his smarmy ass. (It wasn’t that great of an ass anyway, unsalvageable by even pinstripe slacks.) While screaming his head off and causing a ruckus through the industrial sector - Jesus, was that puddle glowing? - the former Hyperion programmer (or recently demoted janitor if you’re feeling like a dick) turned a sharp right and slammed into someone who was definitely more than just flesh and bone.
Without even getting a chance to catch his breath, bolts for joints was barking at him like he was some kinda public menace. (Jury’s still out on that one, but don’t hold your breath.) Rhys steeled the man with a glare - noticed his sclera and squeaked - before wheeling around the cyborg and clamping his palms upon his shoulders.
“Please, please, just hear me out– from one cybernetically enhanced guy to another, help me out and I promise you I will pay you as soon as I make it big here. And I will! I’ve got a gameplan, I just need to stay alive so it can come to fruition!”
Rhys screamed when the guys chasing him finally caught up. He quivered where he stood, wondering if it made any sense to run away from a gun down a straight path.
✖ – HE HAD TO admit the guy was pretty fast. Both in his movements and his speech, the cyborg had a difficult time keeping up with him. One minute the stranger was in his grasp, the next he was hiding behind his back; one moment the stranger was begging for help, and he was silent given another second.
He was tempted to just dump him. The guy appeared to be no more than deadbeat with unattainable dreams. Yet the moment the stranger mentioned ‘cybernetic,’ he had Genos’s attention. Something about one cyborg to another made him feel almost... sympathetic.
Regardless, when the gang that was chasing the stranger appeared, Genos was ready. Not only was the man behind him a cyborg as well, but it would be a lie to say he wasn’t interested in his story. How could he -- such a small man -- have pissed off a group this threatening?
But, then again, he did seem to be the smart ass type.
No matter. His metal arms may had been replaced with plastic, but that didn’t mean that they couldn’t still pack a punch! However, that wasn’t to say he knew how hard of a punch his fists could pack per se, so glancing toward the man behind him, he asked:
“Can you fight?”
“You don’t have to repeat that, you know.”
Genos sure is weird, he’s treating everything the hero says like a philosophical saying when it’s just the most logical thing to do in a situation like this. At least he’s teaching him something, like what he’s supposed to do, and it doesn’t even need to have anything to do with battling, just simple life lessons. Sheesh, he wonders what would happen if the cyborg didn’t meet him in the first place.
“Okay forget the hair, I’m more concerned on how you’re going to eat.”
Saitama furrowed his brows, he didn’t know how Genos’ body worked in the first place and how his body processes food into fuel because he didn’t want his head to hurt, but hopefully the scientists didn’t mess him up and he’s still built the way he was, it’s just that it’s plastic instead of metal.
“Though I’m sure they thought that far and let you keep your ability to eat.”
✖ – HOW HUMBLE! TEACHER was concerned about Genos’s well being...! Although moments like such were rare, it wasn’t to say that the cyborg didn’t appreciate them. In fact, they only made him respect the man more (as if he didn’t respect him enough as it was. Jeez).
“I haven’t tried it out yet,” he admitted, face scrunching. Saitama had a point: if his body was made from a completely different material now, would that affect the way that he functioned? Hopefully not. The scientists had already taken away too much as it was -- to take away one of his power sources would be just cruel. “As you mentioned, however, I doubt they would be that careless. I still need food to continue on.”
Speaking of continuing on, it made Genos curious as to who else could be trapped here too. If Saitama was here, did that mean other heroes (or villains) could have been dragged to Hive City as well? It would be a nice addition, though the ability to spend time with his mentor without any disruptions would be welcomed also.
“Teacher, I would like to ask a question too: is there anyone else from home here as well?”
demoncybxrg
“what’s with that scary expression.. Don’t cha know how to smile?”
✖ – “Of course I do, though I only smile when I see fit. As you can see, there is no reason to so much as grin right now.”
Way to be a Debbie downer.
demoncybxrg
“Are you in it for the money like that jackoff with the drones? All those bits and pieces will suck away your soul. Not to mention you’re shinier than most of the gems a girl can afford.”
✖ – ‘Jackoff with the drones...?’ That was certainly one way to describe a person.
“No, and although I appreciate the compliment, I am content with my current body. All these ‘bits and pieces’ are what’s keeping me alive.”
demoncybxrg
“Hey there, tin can. Or do you go by plastic bottle these days?”
✖ – Eye twitch. So this punk was here too? Great.
“Know your place before you insult me, dickhead. Piss off.”

✖ – SOMETHING WAS REALLY fucking off. Sure, he had only been in this city for a couple days and yeah, maybe he was walking straight out of sector three and onto sector two -- aka the ghetto -- but it didn’t take much to feel that the air was wrong in some way. It felt as if something incredibly dumb was about to happen for an incredibly dumb reason, one way or another. Whatever the case was, Genos couldn’t shake it off.
That is, until he heard loud thumping in the distance.
Like shoes. Like a person. Running towards him. Or more like running away for something.
He should have known better -- he had sensors installed in him, for christ’s sake -- but when a stranger bumped into him, the impact was immense. Maybe it was because he was distracted by the source of noise or the feeling of off-ness was that intense, but when he collided into the other person, the cyborg was knocked back to his senses. Quick to grab hold of the other’s collar, he (at least attempted to) hold him in place.
Here right now, with this man in his grasp, something made Genos believe that this guy was the reason why the atmosphere felt so wrong.
“What the hell is your problem?!”
ワンパンマンらくがき3
“Yeah, sure it isn’t Z-City, but you’ll learn to just move forward and work with what you have.”
Like his house and most importantly his hair, after losing them he felt kind of sad but not for long. It’s better to just keep moving forward than to wallow in a rut just because everyone says that it’s your limit and you’re hopeless. He may be not good at this teaching stuff when it comes to battle strategies or anything to do with fighting but he’s glad that the stuff he says affect the cyborg in some way.
“Preaching like that made me hungry. C’mon, I’ll treat you to some donburi. I hope they just messed with your arms and not your whole body.”
✖ – “MOVE FORWARD AND work with what you have.”
Like most of Saitama’s advice, his words stuck with Genos. Damn his not being prepared! He didn’t have his notebook on him...! So instead, Genos repeated the statement under his breath as an attempt to remember them better. If he was going to be stuck here for as long as Saitama made it seem, those words would be vital to the cyborg’s survival.
It was funny with how short of a time they had spent together, and already his mentor was lightening the mood. As expected of Teacher.
“Preaching like that made me hungry. C’mon, I’ll treat you to some donburi. I hope they just messed with your arms and not your whole body.”
Saitama’s comment was enough to break Genos from his thoughts. “Ah! Of course!” he exclaimed, eyes brightening. “Donburi sounds excellent right now.”
To be able to eat with Teacher again... It was as if nothing had changed. Perhaps his stay wouldn’t be so bad after all.
In any case, the cyborg quickly trotted up to Saitama to keep up with him. “Unfortunately, they took away everything. It feels so odd. If I could, I would like to have a word with them one of these days... First you and your hair, now this...”
Error 404 [intro/open]
⌧ — Data is… insubstantial. It’s an existence that doesn’t actually exist. A thing created with nothing more than numbers and letters, made for the sole purpose of either ease, access, information, or to pass along a message. It couldn’t really have a form, or even be considered real. It was all just bits and pieces of something to be used as a tool before being deleted forever.
So then, why was he here?
He knew he was nothing more than a program created for a single purpose, but where he stood was not the Datascape that he had been born into. When he clenched his fists… when he drew the makeshift sword he’d been given, the feel was completely different. Not that he could explain why- it was clear to him that these Scientists had done something that was beyond his understanding, and that frustrated him.
It was all off. It felt almost wrong somehow. Deep blue eyes carefully examined the buildings and streets around him. He had a hard time believing this was ‘real’, even if it suddenly felt like the notion that he was a program was silly simply because he was no longer a part of the original System inside the Journal. Whatever he was now… was on a level higher than simple binary.
No matter how impressive this city and his current state of being was, however, he still felt the icy-hot vice of anger clutch at his belly. It seemed that no matter what the circumstance; as his ‘real’ counterpart in the Organization, his brainwashed simulation-bound self, or as nothing but a program, he was always doomed to be used as some kind of tool or source of amusement to someone with more authority or power.
Drawing his hood further down past his face, he felt his lip curl in disgust and resigned fury. In his current state, any rebellion would end up in a situation nothing less like a fly being swatted against a wall. He could be a nuisance at best, and an easily deleted bundle of numbers at worst.
For now, all he wanted to do was escape the crowd. Equipped with nothing but his mobility and a nearly useless wooden sword, this shadow of a shadow vanished from the sidewalk with nothing but a slightly glitchy looking patch of air to note his previous position.
Within a span of a second he would reappear on what at first appeared to be a deserted overpass, with the only sound being the noise of a few cars droning to and from their destinations below.
It figures, he thought as he brandished the wooden sword in front of him, staring at it as though it were a foreign object. It figures that when he was so close to getting what he wanted that he would be dragged here for who knows how long.
Teeth clenched as a muffled noise of frustration burst from his lungs, he brought the weapon down with every fiber of his being upon the safety railing of the overpass. Somehow it didn’t immediately shatter, but so consumed he was with his actions that he hadn’t noticed the stranger that had been crossing the overpass the moment he had teleported in.
✖ – “IF YOU’RE GOING to let your anger out, at least do it right.” The stranger caught his attention when he saw their violent outburst toward the overpass’s railing . Hell, who wouldn’t notice something like that? Whether they were new or simply angry Genos couldn’t tell, but whichever they were led him to try and talk to them in the first place.
If they were new, cool. More new friends to bond with. He had arrived recently himself, so to see someone as angry as he was to arrive in somewhere so unfamiliar was refreshing. He could help the guy out. Get acquainted.
If they were angry, perhaps from a bad day of some sort, well then they would have a problem. As a member of the Heroes Association, his heroic customs were returning in which the stranger could pose a danger to society. Sure, stopping something as petty as this wouldn’t count for much, but at least it was something.
From the looks of it however, the individual across from him seemed to be both: new and terribly angry. Oh boy.
“Break your sword like that and you’ll get splinters everywhere. That’s a pretty shitty way to end a day.”
