Celty had already got used to all the chaos around her; she didn’t feel the need to see more of it and even if she had to, then only to put an end to it.

I’m convinced a lot of people want to turn the tide… I’d be willing to join if there’s a plan of action. Are you planning on doing something?

“Yeah.” A deep breath. “Sector two needs to be cleaned up. We could build a base of resistance there.”

Even if her city were to disappear, she couldn’t abide by this sort of injustice. Invading another city out of fear? Out of desperation? That never should have been the first choice of action. Nisha didn’t believe in kill or be killed.

Even if it meant allowing the ugly side of her to exist in her place, so many more lives were at stake here.

“F, fake?  Is that how the other city works…?  But, I’m certain I’m real.” He had realized, distantly, that there was probably a double of him out there, if that was really how this incursion was shaping up, but he hadn’t dwelt on what his double was like.

That… was concerning. “There’s two of you out there?”

That was also concerning.

A snort. Nisha shook her head and retorted, “That goody two-shoes isn’t me.” But it could have been her if her childhood hadn’t been such a screwed up disaster. “But yeah, people have been talkin’ about doppelgangers or body doubles. Whatever you wanna call it, I plan on stopping it.”

“Sounds fun. Lucky for us, ‘borrowing’ things is right up my alley. I’d say our best chance is to nab some off of those soldiers - the pig-like ones. Helps us and slows them down. We’ll kill two birds with one stone.”

She pulls out her gun and gives the firearm a twirl. “They’ve got numbers, but I’ll bet you anything we outclass them in skill. Up for teaching them a thing or two?”

She likes the way this lady thinks, filling in the gaps and holes of her slapdash outline. Nisha’s lips quirk up in agreement as she tips her hat. “Roger that.”

Walking and talking is more her speed: Nisha starts down the road, keeping off the main streets, before answering Kasumi’s inquiry, “Thought you’d never ask. A little education goes a long way ‘round these parts. Between you and me, we’ll be serving up life lessons like hotcakes.”

He wheezes instead of talking, still down for the count.  He does manage to roll up onto his knees, hands in a defensive position, mostly because he’s afraid she’ll hit him again if he doesn’t do something.

Ehh. She honestly didn’t expect him to grovel, but it does take the edge off of things. Squatting down to his height, she gives him another look over and sighs. Probably worthless in a bar fight.

“Are you a fake or the real one?”

He hits the ground before he even realizes what’s happened, and he’s going to be there for a while.

Fate is a cruel mistress.  Nisha is crueler.

Down for the count so soon? Aww, shucks. She didn’t know her own strength until now. Thanks for that one, Beauty, you’ve been a real help.

She sounds so certain that he has to check where his hands are.  They are, thankfully, at his sides where he left them.

“Well, thank you for noticing my virility, but…” If he’s being honest, this is not a sentence he has said as many times as he’d like people to believe and he’s not sure how to complete it. “You are delusional.” He is so off his game.

It’s something in his tone that sets her off. Or maybe it’s the look in his eyes. Either way, Nisha doesn’t hold back when she drives her fist into the man’s gut-- oh. That was lower than she meant to throw it. Even better. Poor guy’s gonna have some trouble standing for a while now.

“At least I’m not the one who just got punched in the dick.”

“Excuse me?”  At first he’s baffled, then he tries to turn it into a joke.

“Was I breathing your air incorrectly?” Beauty, no.

“It looked like you wanted to do a whole lot more than that, stud. Hands off.”

Someone’s a little paranoid. And conceited.

To be fair, she did have Jack’s eyes and that alone would make most people kooky.

“So you’re a woman of the law.” She grins. The thought of working right alongside a figure of authority, someone who dedicates their life to hunting down law-breaking citizens such as herself, is always an enticing - not to mention thrilling - proposition. “It’s only natural that you’d want to help, then.”

“’Pretty good’ doesn’t even begin to describe my technical abilities, and this city certainly isn’t short on machinery. I’m more of a hacker, usually. Sabotage is more suited towards my skills, but let me take a crack at anything and I’m sure I can get it back in working order in no time.”

“So, Ms. Sheriff, I’m all yours. What’s the plan?”

‘A woman of the law’. It’s got a nice ring to it. Almost as nice as the little ting! of her star.

“First things first, we need hazmat suits. I doubt they’re being handed out, so we’ll just have to ‘borrow’ them for the time being. After that, someone’s gotta clear the air.” If the layout of this city is anything like hers, she’s got an idea of how to get around. “We’ll worry about the water last.” Less tech-work and more hands-on stuff. Should be a blast.

The city’s gone to hell, but Nisha’s still on the clock, ready to bust some caps. Or nuts as the case may be. One wrong look and her fist is up some guy’s crotch. She’s been rather testy lately thanks to the living situation (or lack thereof), so any excuse to let off some steam will be taken gladly.

Anything that makes life harder for us is a weak spot on our part… I don’t even know what happened exactly, just that they went on a rampage and pretty much destroyed the sector.

Someone needed to put an end to this. If the scientists couldn’t (or didn’t want to), it was time for the stronger cittazens to stand up for themselves and protect their city. But when? How?

For a moment, she went quiet. This woman didn’t realize that this was not her city she sought to protect. Oh well. She’d always been a proponent of justice, of the moral high ground. “I don’t know the specifics, but that doesn’t matter much. Not if we want to turn the tide.” 

Nisha glanced off into the distance, frowning at the sounds of chaos and destruction. People were dying and she was only vaguely aware of where to begin.

“Sector Two’s been a bit of a mess as long as I’ve been here, but it has charm to it. It’s a dump, I won’t deny that, but it’s so alive. Maybe I’m just being sentimental, but I can’t stand to see a place like this fall. Not when so many people call it home.”

 “You look like someone with a thing or two up her sleeve. You up for doing something about it?”

“Heh.” Sure, she’s got a plan or two. Maybe three if you throw in a few meat shields. “I’m just doin’ my job. The badge isn’t for show.”

Embossed in gold is the word ‘SHERIFF’ and she flicks the star with her finger as she walks on past her mysterious new acquaintance. “What are you working with?”

The woman was a complete stranger, but in consideration of the current events it hardly mattered, did it? Celty pulled out her PDA, rapidly typing her thoughts up for her.

I’ve heard of it. To be honest, this is a nightmare already…

Oh? Guess she’d been thinking out loud again.

“I’m not concerned about the gas leaks but the radiation is a little harder to deal with.” Though, technically her shield would keep her protected from the worst of it; damn thing could absorb acid on the right settings. “Not to mention how many of those creepy blobs are swarmin’ ‘round like they own the damn place.”

“Sector two’s a bust, huh? This is turnin’ into a nightmare.”

But the question was, who could she trust? A one-man repair job was downright impossible. With a small recon team, though? There was a slight chance she could get things running again. Beauty of technology and butt-stomping oxygen tanks, y’kno?

Her teeth shone in a gleaming grin. “Oh believe me, I understand perfectly.” And now she was curious. 

“Admittedly, I’m still inexprienced. Do you have any advice…?”

“Next time, I’d like to try wringing out more than a few tears from the stupid fop.”

She’d call this an interesting development, but that would imply that little Miss Dollie hadn’t been putting up a front the entire time. Intrigued, she smiled effortlessly and answered as if she were giving out the weather, “Start with the extremities. No one’s gonna die from a few broken fingers.”

“Maybe not a killjoy per se, but I’ve been told I can be ‘too serious.’” He shrugged. “What did you do for for that guy? He sounds like a real asshole.” He could go for a little story; the people here had such fascinating lives.

“Nothin’. Except save his ass a dozen times.” Something she regretted doing as they had nothing in common aside from being damn good shots. 

“I was being paid to work alongside him. Our business ideologies... clashed, for lack of a better word. Athena could tell the story better than I could; she’s got a real knack for it.” The sarcasm dripped off her lips like honey, faux-sweet and akin to venom.

“You wouldn’t be the first to say so…” Or the last, he remarks privately to himself. “But let me answer your question with a question…why would you ever want to just fit in? Like I said, it’s boring. Don’t you want to be noticed and appreciated (maybe even admired) for the things that you do? Why slip quietly into the shadows when you’re worth the spotlight? I’m just sayin’.”

“I never said anything about fitting in,” she corrected as soon as he finished his last sentence, eager to get her point across. “What I’m wondering is why you’re so willing to paint a target on your back. Me? I can handle myself; I don’t mind being flashy.” Which of course begged the question: Could this fellow handle himself as well? She chuckled at the thought, ready to be proven wrong.

It wasn’t surprising that Marian had begun to prefer the more grimy and crime-ridden areas of Hive Citty. She’d taken up night patrols, partially for the advantage of putting her nimble fingers to work picking coin from pockets. It was like Lowtown, but was lacking a certain charm to it all. Maybe it had just been lacking her all this time. She snorted to herself, humoring the idea.

She was lazily resting most of her weight against her staff, cheek pressed against the gnarled wood as her slim fingers picked through the money she had managed to slip out of  the nearest drunkard. It’d been unsavory, but the trouble had paid off. She could get herself fairly drunk with this.

Maybe then she’d actually sleep tonight.

Her hopeful thinking was interrupted by the sound of footsteps and Marian smirked, craning her head slightly to look at her company. “Most of them are all talk. But they are dumb enough to carry a good amount of money on them.” The mage pocketed her winnings and motioned towards the grimy streets. “It may be boring but there’s plenty of easy reward. Not to say I wouldn’t kill for a little excitement here or there. Could always start a good bar brawl if it fits the mood?”

Nisha whistled long and low, entranced by the idea of a random scuffle. Hopefully the other lady wasn’t just being sarcastic; she was all for the notion of pointless violence so long as the odds were skewed against her favor. “I could always cause a distraction. While you’re busy nicking their pockets, I’ll be working up an appetite. You in?” 

She jerked her thumb towards a bar just down the road. A seedy place. Some guy stumbled out and spotted her and her new best friend, started cursing at them, and bellowed in a rage. He would have made a good first target.
