Animal welfare and animal rights are different things; it is good and normal for humans to be slightly anthropocentric while acknowledging our role within the greater ecosystem. Factory farming should indeed be dismantled- I want all animals harvested for food/leather/fur/bones/organs to have full and rich lives with as little suffering as possible before they're harvested. But it is not anti-leftist to live as a predator within the ecosystem. It is not more wrong for humans to eat salmon than it is for bears and eagles to do so.

I agree! theres a humongous difference between how indigenous people live of off animals, its sustainable and doesn't cause immense harm to animals or the environemnt. unlike the animal agriculture industry, factory farming, etc which exists on a massive and widespread scale that is damaging, unsustainable, polluting, and horrible for animals and the people who work in these industries too.

Your vegetables were almost certainly grown in a monoculture and were almost certainly harvested by slaves.

Your quinoa is making indigenous and resident people in the area that grows it unable to afford their traditional staple food.

Your agave is making bats and other animals that rely on agave go extinct, and is overworking the agave plants themselves.

Your palm oil is destroying the bornean rainforest and directly destroying orangutans specifically, who are killed as vermin on palm oil plantations.

Your soy is a monocrop that is almost certainly picked by people not being paid their worth if they are being paid at all.

This doesn't even go into the fact that there are many, many people that cannot eat vegan sources of protein. I myself am one of them--I literally cannot eat legumes not even of any kind, and legumes are the only vegan source of protein--but the reason I can't is very common.

It is also a violation of human rights to tell people how to eat. Like I know it's a common one because of fucking Diet Culture but it very much is none of your fucking business what people eat, and it shouldn't be any political cause's business what people fucking eat, unless it's "whatever your body needs and wants to eat", because food is part of someone's body and someone's body is not anybody's fucking business but their own. That's part of bodily autonomy and fostering a culture of consent and fat liberation and disability rights.

Your food is not praxis, it's food. Your food is not medicine, it's food. You cannot Individual Choices your way out of systemic problems, and preaching that any form of Individual Choices can do this is spreading lies. You may believe them but they are still lies.

Addressing problems in the food system first and foremost involves listening to the workers in that system, not talking over them, not talking to the consumers. It starts with labour rights, not animal rights. It starts with Landback, not animal rights. It starts with prison abolition, not animal rights. Care about your fellow human beings first!

This poem struck a chord with me. I had never heard it before last night's episode and found it very appropos given the focus on parental relationships. Just loved it's use and the beautiful recitation by Annette Badland (Mae).

The ending is a little cynical, but the rest is a very succinct description of generational trauma.
