Devotional for November 21

Yet we hear that some of you are living idle lives, refusing to work and meddling in other people’s business. We command such people and urge them in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and work to earn their own living. - 2 Thessalonians 3:11-12

Insight

A busybody is a gossip. An idle person who doesn’t work ends up filling his or her time with less than helpful activities, like gossip. Rumors and hearsay are tantalizing, exciting to hear, and make us feel like insiders. But they tear people down.

Challenge

If you often find your nose in other people’s business, you may be underemployed. Look for a task to do for Christ or for your family, and get to work.

God’s Word makes it clear that the life touched and tainted with sin is a forfeited life. The soul that sins shall die. The wonder that we will never fully understand is that God wanted to save our forfeited lives. So He allowed the blood of the divine Saviour to be offered on our behalf. God promised Jacob, “I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I promised you.” Genesis 28:13-15 Maybe, you feel you have been wronged in your workplace or perhaps you have worked hard making ends meet and you feel your labour is in vain, nobody appreciates you. Jacob must have felt the same. Laban cheated Jacob. He changed his wages 10 times. But Jacob was diligent and hard-working. He defeated the crafty Laban by hard work and by depending on God. God blessed Jacob, so he returned home a wealthy man. God is watching you. Your hard work will be rewarded. Situation will turn around. He will exalt you in due time. Do not give up hope! Promotion comes from God: He puts down one, and sets up another. Psalm 75-6-7

“One of life’s bitter truths is that we cannot change the past. Bad decisions always have bad consequences. But the good news is, you can change the future—with God’s help. How do you do that? Seek God’s forgiveness for whatever you’ve done. Don’t let shame, or fear, or guilt, or anything else keep you from Christ. He loves you and offers you forgiveness as a free gift—a gift He paid for with His own blood. No sin is beyond His forgiveness. Leave your burden of guilt and shame at the foot of the cross. Then ask God to help you walk with Him every day. He will lead you in the path of righteousness for His name’s sake. Psalm 23:3”

Jesus said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 18:3 When I read the verses above I am reminded of the fact that as a mature adult from a worldly perspective I am pretty much totally self sufficient. The reality is that God is my provider, Jesus is the reason I am acceptable to God (Colossians 1:22). I am not worthy of God, I am not really self sufficient without Him. I am dependent on God for everything just as children are dependent on their parents for survival (Romans 8:32). “Unless you change,” Jesus insists, “you won’t enter the kingdom of heaven!” Jesus isn’t subtle. Who wants to be vulnerable, powerless, and humble like a child? “Unless you change and become like a child!” I MUST change. I MUST be humble. I MUST surrender to the King of glory so I can find life.

Jesus cried, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” Matthew 27:46 Can any of you who are parents imagine abandoning your child to be beaten, mocked, scorned, and killed by your enemies – because their crimes needed to be punished? But that’s what the Father did, for you and me. Sin deserves punishment. Jesus took all of that on Himself. Jesus paid for your sins so you wouldn’t have to. He took the wrath that you deserve so you could know forgiveness and access into the Kingdom of God. He was forsaken so you could be accepted. How do you respond to this love, this great sacrifice? Have you really put your faith in Jesus Christ and what He did for you on the cross?

Believers Are Salt and Light

Matthew 5:13-16 (NKJV) - “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.

“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.  Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.  Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

Do not hasten in your spirit to be angry, for anger rests in the bosom of fools.

Ecclesiastes 7:9

There’s a time and place to be angry—at the right moment and to the right degree—but our anger is often destructive, for “human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires” (James 1:20, NIV). We get angry about politics; our traffic snarls exasperate us; and daily life has its own tensions. Eruptions of anger may be understandable, but they can damage our most precious relationships.

The first way of dealing with madness this March is recognizing that the anger isn’t contained in our circumstances; it’s contained in our hearts. The circumstances—a rude caller, a bounced check, a burnt biscuit—may provoke our anger, but the real source is the underlying rage in our own spirits. Anger begins in our minds and thoughts.

The best way, then, for dealing with anger is to fill the mind with God’s Word. If you need some anger management, open your Bible and seriously search out its best verses about anger. Start with Ecclesiastes 7:9 and James 1:20, then check out Ephesians 4:25-32. Find some verses to commit to memory, and let God use His words to bring healing to your angry thoughts.

The day is coming says the Lord when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and Judah. This covenant will not be like the one I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand and brought them out of land of Egypt. They broke that covenant though I love them as a husband loves his wife says the Lord. But this is the new covenant I will make with the people of Israel after those days says the Lord I will put my instructions deep within them and I will write them on their hearts. I will be there God, and they will be my people. And they will not need to teach their neighbors, nor will they need to teach their relatives, saying, you should know the Lord for everyone from the least to the greatest will know me already says the Lord. And I will forgive their wickedness and I will never again remember their sins.

“Boasting in the Lord is, on the one hand, quite the opposite of boasting in one’s self. Instead of drawing attention to ourselves, we draw attention to Christ. This boasting is a call for people to acknowledge him-We are seeking praise for Christ’s worth. God himself is calling us to find our pride and joy in Christ alone! In Christ who was crucified for our sins. This Christ crucified is foolishness to the world because they cannot see that they are sinful and perishing! But for those who are being saved it is the power of God. We are completely destitute without Christ. Christ is all in all, let us boast in Him, because in Him we live and move and have our being. In Him is salvation, redemption and eternal life. 2 Corinthians 10:17 “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.””
