For our new exhibit curated by Allison Fischbach, “1876 Centennial Exhibition Chromolithography Proofs,” Meredith Moore scanned and animated a few of the proofs to show the different stages involved!

Developed in the 19th century, chromolithography, or “chromo-printing,” was a color printing method that used multiple flat stones or zinc plates to apply layers of color to a print. The process was incredibly labor intensive and high quality prints could take months to produce. Printers and shop workers were highly skilled in all aspects of development, from applying images to plates, to etching, to printing final proofs.

Contained in this very special volume, Treasures of Art, Industry and Manufacture Represented in the American Centennial Exhibition at Philadelphia 1876 Proof Book (T825 .P45 N678 1876 Cage) are proofs outlining the entire printing process from base layers of color, to fine detailed highlights. Developed for the 1876 American Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, this collection was printed by Cosack & Co. of Buffalo, N.Y. In the preface editor C.B. Norton explains the impetus for this commemorative collection was to show items of art, industry, and manufacturing presented at the exhibition from countries around the globe.

so, not only has this entire bathroom debate/target boycott bullshit made me ridiculously dysphoric because i am so tired of seeing hate towards transgender people and having biologic sex equated to a person’s gender but now i’m also terrified to use any bathroom while i’m out.

like, i can’t go into the men’s room because i’m afraid of being trapped in there and assaulted because i don’t feel like i can pass. now, while i’ve always hated going in the women’s room because it makes me more dysphroic, i’ve often done it because i already didn’t feel safe in the men’s room. now on top of feeling dysphoric in the women’s room, i also don’t feel safe there now either because i’m afraid of being assaulted there as well since i present as masculine.

plus i’ve seen all of these posts from friends who act as though they’re supportive but the majority of what they post online focuses on how it’s ridiculous to make a person who has transitioned use the bathroom of their birth sex and that just makes me feel like more of a failure because i haven’t transitioned and i know i don’t fucking pass because i’m always being read as female. even worse, i’ve had some friends post “joke posts” like one of a bathroom sign that includes unicorns and mythological creatures and shit like that and everyone’s making me jokes like, “i draw the line at hobbits” or shit like that and it makes me angry too because my gender identity isn’t fucking fantasy and this situation isn’t something to make light of. maybe it’s not a big deal to you because you’re not impacted by it but it’s made me so fucking self-conscious and depressed and anxious.

This is some very real shit from a dear friend of mine in the trans community, and you need to listen because this is from someone who is actually being affected daily, not just by shitty laws but by shitty attitudes from people on both sides. Genders aren’t fantasy, genders aren’t jokes, and you don’t ever get to decide what someone is or isn’t based on how they appear to you or whatever surgery they may or may not have had.

There’s no pressure for any of you to donate and there are many greater causes out there to support. I’m lucky to have been able to afford these braces at all, but I was only able to do that because of my parents’ willingness to support me. I want to alleviate the stress of such a high price, even a little bit.

let me tell you a story...

… it is not the story now i did not have surgery on new year’s eve and am not having any surgery at this time, but i digress.

it is the story of what happened when myself and allison decided to go to the abandoned pa turnpike in the snow. now, we did this a year ago without any trouble. however, this time a forest ranger was blocking off the portion of the trail we normally use to hike the turnpike.

so we did the normal thing that anyone would do and parked the car along a small strip of the road and started to hike down a mountain trail named “tunnel trail.” we figured, you see, that this would take us directly to the tunnel without any trouble.

before i continue, i should note that apparently a year and a half in florida has limited my intelligence when it comes to dressing for cold weather. because while i was wearing a long sleeved shirt, a t-shirt over that, a flannel, and the warmest jacket i own, i was also wearing ripped up jeans (with fishnets on underneath, in my defense) and my converse all stars with normal socks because i don’t even know where my wool ones are. i had, however, taken the precaution of wearing my father’s slip on snow boots, which were way too big for me.

'The Black Tapes' is a 'Serial'-style podcast that will scare your socks off

If you like being terrified, this horror documentary series is definitely the podcast for you.

If you’re searching for something scary to get you into the Halloween spirit, it’s time to start listening to The Black Tapes Podcast. Framed as a Serial-esque series hosted by reporter Alex Reagan, it feels like what might happen if a perky NPR journalist decided to investigate the Blair Witch Project.

The Black Tapes Podcast was originally billed as a profile of paranormal investigator Richard Strand, a character partly inspired by the real-life skeptic James Randi. But things take a turn for the disturbing when Reagan discovers Strand’s file of unsolved cases, the so-called Black Tapes. Despite his best efforts, Strand hasn’t been able to find a scientific explanation for this unsettling collection of seemingly supernatural events.

As Reagan begins to investigate these cases herself, her interviews with witnesses and academic experts feel so realistic that some listeners fail to realize that the podcast is a work of fiction. In the vein of the icon of audio drama Orson Welles’ The War of the Worlds, the best kind of horror story is one that you can almost believe is true.

The podcast borrows much of its inspiration from “real” paranormal events and artifacts, from the urban legend Slender Man to medieval Satanic mythology. Some of these details will undoubtedly be familiar to horror fans, but the documentary format and creepy atmosphere are more than enough to make Black Tapes frighteningly addictive.

In an email interview, we spoke with creators Paul Bae and Terry Miles. In order keep the mystery alive, they never admit that The Black Tapes Podcast is anything less than real.
