INSIDER'S TRAVEL SECRETS
For this week's theme, here is a list of my favorite, locals-only restaurants and treat shops in Denver County! I highly encourage you to try them all!
The Market (pictured first): This cafe is located right on Larimer Street in downtown. My favorite bite is the Spring Fling cake full of fresh berries and fruit
Dbar (pictured second): this restaurant is right on 17th, and is my friends and I's ultimate dinner spot. Make sure you get an Arnold Palmer and a Cake and Shake to complete the experience!
The Shoppe (pictured third): right by East High School, this cupcake and cereal shop is very cute. They even make a cupcake with a prize baked inside!
Ace (pictured fourth): owned by the same people as Steuben's (number 7), this restaurant has amazing Asian food and even has a giant room full of ping pong tables to play on.
Little Man Ice Cream (pictured fifth): although this outdoor spot is only open in the summer, try it while you can. Their salted oreo ice cream is to die for!
Linger (also pictured fifth): this restaurant is located in the revamped Olinger Mortuaries building, however don't let that turn you away; their international, street food comes tapas-style so it can shared with the whole family.
Steuben's: located right down the street from Ace, this restaurant features comfort food, and is set in an old garage!
Stella's Coffee Haus: this quaint coffee shop can be found on Pearl Street and is a great place to catch up for friends or even study for finals. Try their drink the "Wandering Elephant" if you get the chance.
Cake Crumbs: Lastly, this Park Hill bakery has everything from breakfast to lunch, and they also bake beautiful and delicious cupcakes and cakes. Or for the non-Denver natives, follow their cupcake truck for a treat on the go!
DENVER COUNTY: Capturing the Vibe
There is no better time than the summer to get out and enjoy our world-class city! That’s why Denver Mayor Michael B. Hancock is launching “Denver Days,” a new citywide tradition aimed at creating stronger neighborhoods by fostering community service projects and neighborhood gatherings annually during the month of August. As stated on this poster I found in a local Ben and Jerry's, the first annual “Denver Days” will be this summer from August 3-11. During this week, Denver residents will be asked to work with their neighbors to organize a community service project or work together to host a fun, festive gathering for their neighborhood. From community clean ups to backyard potlucks and block parties, “Denver Days” will provide a unique opportunity to connect neighbors and neighborhoods. Independent Spirit
Denver Startup Week (September 16-21, 2013) is a celebration of everything entrepreneurial in Denver. Denver has a rich history of entrepreneurship and this week long event will showcase Denver's entrepreneurial community with an emphasis on technology, design, social entrepreneurship and business. The event is intended to unite the entrepreneurial community in Denver and will celebrate the great companies, innovation and ideas happening in the City and the people and inspiration behind them.
The week is focused on 5 tracks - Business, Design, Tech, Manufacturing, and Social Enterprise - and events includes sessions, presentations, panels, workshops, happy hours, social events, job fairs, and much more.
In honor of this week's theme of INDEPENDENT SPIRIT, I found a website called Something Independent, linked here.
Something Independent is based in Denver, Colorado, a place where business and lifestyle converge like no other. Something Independent (SI) is dedicated to bringing the stories of entrepreneurs to life. Through events, online media, and education they showcase innovative businesses and the people behind them. In doing so, they foster business opportunities, promote collaboration and cultivate a culture of entrepreneurism.

Denver County has a spirit of vitality because it continues to develop and grow with vigor every day. In fact, this desirable spirit is the reason that businesses such as Trader Joe's and Voodoo Doughnut have recently decided to open up new locations right here in Denver.
In an interview, Tres Shannon, co-owner of Voodoo Doughnut (which currently only has locations in Oregon) addressed why he chose Denver. He said that he's frequently asked why he hasn't expanded to the "big fish" such as New York, Los Angeles or San Francisco, and his response is that he prefers Denver's vibe, saying that similar to Portland, Denver is health-oriented (despite the ironic fact that they are selling donuts). However, this goes to show that Denver is full of vitality and its expanding and profitable environment encourages outside businesses to join the community and thrive.
WHOLESOME
Friday's Word of the Day: WHOLESOME Denver County is where I have spent my entire childhood, and life for that matter. The city offers diversity and excitement, but it also boasts a homey, wholesome culture. Nearly every corner you pass is brightened by a house of worship of some variety, so there is an abundance of faith all around you. And, you can live very close to the city and still belong to a strong, tight-knit community like Park Hill, where I live. The neighbors surrounding me are the most genuine and kind people and I feel blessed to be always on their alert. Additionally, the city is covered with parks, museums, libraries and many places to spend quality time with your family and friends...all the while learning, exploring and growing. It is a great place to grow up, and to raise a family of your own!
Thursday’s Word of the Day: HOME
More than anything, Denver County is my home and I’m incredibly lucky to be able to live here. However, Colorado welcomes new people to share in its beauty and positive energy everyday, so it is by no means a natives-only, exclusive environment. As stated in this song, we too want to “make this place your home" and allow everyone to share in the joy that Colorado offers.

Wednesday's Word of the Day: PARADISE Although Colorado may not be able to boast the sandy beaches or the exotic rainforests that one may typically think of when they hear the word "paradise," we have much more variety and beauty scenery to offer. To start, our mountains hold endless possibilities for adventures, from skiing and sledding during the winter season or hiking and biking in the summer. Also, we have 300+ days of sunshine annually; so talking about sunny paradise, we have it all right in our backyard.
Today Denver County is ADVENTUROUS. Denverites have a tendency to fearlessly try new things, whether it's a new restaurant, an adrenaline-pumping activity or simply walking the streets and discovering hidden gems. Here is a picture I took of the Denver B-Cycle bikes, stationed throughout the metro area, that can be rented for only $8 a day and are an environmentally friendly way to explore Denver County! Today's Word of the Day: ADVENTUROUS Sure, the nearby Rocky Mountains are an outdoor enthusiast's paradise. But you can get your fill of outdoor adventure well within Denver's city limits. To kick off this week's theme, Word of the Day, I chose to start by highlighting Colorado's inherent PRIDE. Every Colorado native is proud of their homeland and us Coloradans hold a distinct love for our state that not many other places in our country, let alone the world, can say for themselves. Anywhere you go in Denver County, and even throughout the entire state, people can be spotted flaunting their Colorado garb, as pictured in the 27 collaged photos above. From pumpkins to Red Rocks lights, nail polish, ping pong tables, hot air balloons, car hoods, fences and even cakes, us natives enjoy representing the Colorado flag and taking pride in it. The Colorado flag unites us all and brings us together around our passion for our amazing home.
