Structure on the body

Design and construct a sculptural form that can be worn on the body where the starting point is the 3d structures you made in paper and card, and your research from Broomfield.. You can use any media, RECYCLED where possible, which you should source yourself, or we also have a range available in the studio, including paper, wallpaper, fabrics etc.

This does not have to be a fashion garment- do not be inhibited by the body- use it as a base to work on/ around.

Again, this should be abstract, and not be a covering of leaves etc. Consider form, texture and surface, experiment with a broad variety media manipulation.

You should generate your own ideas initially, but can work in pairs to develop an outcome together.

You should research artists and designers who make sculptural forms on the body, and you should plan your ideas carefully in your book before making. Ensure you fully test materials, surfaces and structure before and during making the work, and record all your analysis in your journal and photographs.

Your final outcome must be photographed and filmed on a human form in the photography studio between 9.00 and 4.00, so make it to fit yourself or a specific model. It may have a function, or can be purely a visual wonder! You should experiment with lighting, poses for photos and film..

Thursday 9.00 - 12.15

cut, slice, scour, fold, bend, pleat, prick, tear, roll, slot……

Make a series of white structures using the shapes, patterns and surfaces you observed at Broomfield.

These should be ABSTRACTED forms ie no leaf shapes, insects etc. Work from the drawings, photos and b&w sequence drawings.

Materials: paper, tissue, card, string, straws…

Take care with the construction, and use a scalpel to cut and scour the materials, tear edges deliberately. Explore a range of joining methods- making tape is not acceptable- use tabs and slotting where possible.

Photograph your experiments throughout, and finally photograph using a light source against a white background.

Sequencing images

Bauhaus student Kurt Kranz (1910–1997) was a painter, illustrator, graphic artist, typographer, and experimental filmmaker—an explorer of form and color in motion. His research focus was the form—as something changing, something dynamic. “My relationship to form was open from the beginning,” he wrote. “I was interested in change, where from and where to? These early studies are based on an array of forms that gradually change across a sequence of individual images. Each picture represents one phase in a transformation or variation of process. These individual pictures cannot be isolated from one another, they appear as “phases of processes that gain their narration only in the entirety of phases”

Task

Select two images drawn at Broomfield that have interesting shapes, forms and patterns. These should be quite different in character - spikey and curved, smoothed and holed, fresh and rotten.

These images form the first and last of a sequence of 7 images, A6 or A5 in size. Imagine the first image transforming and morphing in pattern and structure until it finally becomes the last, as smoothly as possible.

Draw the 5 images in between the first and last to show this transformation using black and white only initially, any media- ink, cut paper, chalk,fine liner. etc

Complete by 4.00 today.

Private study

1. Artist research- research some papermakers, photographers, land artists and Kurt Kranz form the above tasks, and add images integrated into your sketchbook/ journal. Add some of your own, not just the examples given.

2. Colour development, time permitting- translate your 7 images into full color. Select one media, or try using a range of materials in some initial samples- colored paper, watercolor, marker pens, pastels or a combination of all. You should make all 7 images, which must work as a sequence in terms of both content and stylistically.

Liverpool re-make

You should have completed your handmade book and put photos on Tumblr, which will now be used to generate ideas, solve problems, and experiment broadly.

Select works you saw in the exhibitions in Liverpool- Tobacco Warehouse, Tate Modern or Wondrous Place, to make a new, original, thought-provoking work.

You could:

Select 2/3 works, and combine them to make something new.

Re-make one work, influenced by another, changing the materials, processes, scale, colour, surface etc

Make work that is the total opposite of it’s original in terms of form and/ or function- a small detailed drawing becomes a huge structure, a photograph transforms into a 3d garment, a graphic poster translates to an instillation piece

Use you research into to city of Liverpool, influenced by the artists seen, to make work. A line drawing of the Liver Building becomes a mixed media instillation seen at the Tobacco Warehouse.

Be adventurous, take risks, push your ideas, which you should explore in your sketchbook initially.

You can take influences from other artists and designers not seen in Liverpool as well.

YOU WILL EXHIBIT YOUR WORK FRIDAY AT 1.00, so think about how you will do this as part of the development process.

No, not really, whatever you like, so long as it's good content....

Big ideas

This week, you will be exploring scale, working from very small to very large. Combine at least 3 elements from your small holiday book, to make a large piece approx. 1 x 1 metre.

You should make a number of thumbnail drawings first, to plan the imagery and composition, in your sketchbook. You should thoroughly document your ideas and process, including artist research, in your sketchbook and journal.

You MUST fill the page.

You can use any materials, any techniques; drawing, collage, stitch, photocopies, ink, paint etc- but don’t resort to the easiest option. You will be working on a 2d surface, but could make this a low relief if you like. The work can be figurative or abstract.

Remember, the marks will need to be larger and scaled up. Work on the drawing as a whole, then add the details. Photograph the process of making the drawing as you go.

Induction project- collaborative installation

Working in your group, make a piece of installation that combines elements from all of your summer drawing books.

You will need to - discuss - ideas generate - plan - research - resource - develop - construct - record - evaluate as part of a team.

The installation should be site-specific, and can be anywhere around the college that can be removed and will not damage the structure it it attached to. You can build, knit, draw, collage, stitch, pleat fold…….

Materials available are basic- drawing materials, brown paper, newspaper, string, tape, paint- but you can source any additional materials as needed.

You will need to make decisions about the site, content, scale, shape, methods to be used etc to make the work coherent. Decide who will do what according to skills and interests.

You will need to record the whole process through drawing, photos, and video- how it is constructed, how you solved problems etc. One of your team might be responsible for this, or you might all record your own footage. Maybe make a video diary? Post on Tumblr as you go.

3.00 DEADLINE

You will now present your work and sell your ideas to the group through your imagery on Tumblr. How will you do this?

NOW REMOVE YOUR WORK AND PUT IT IN THE BIN/ TAKE IT HOME.

Private study Thursday/ Friday- Record the whole process of you collaborative project in your A4 sketchbook. Make drawings, print out photos, show the construction process, and annotate where appropriate.

Journal- Reflect on the whole process over the induction day. You might consider:

how did you decide what you would make as a group?

How did you allocate tasks?

Did the group work well? how did you find working in the group?

what materials and processes did you try? did you take risks as a group and individually?

How did the final piece work out? How could it have been improved?

Bring you sketch book, journal and summer work to your first lesson next week.

Liverpool visit 15th September

We will be visiting the 12th edition of Liverpool Biennial, ‘uMoya: The Sacred Return of Lost Things’, along with the Tate and The Museum of Liverpool. You will see a very broad range of work that will delight and inspire, but may also confuse or not interest you. That's OK- on Foundation, you should be challenged with new ideas, concepts and methods, so be open-minded and learn something new. You will photograph and draw artworks and details- you might love a texture you see, be fascinated by how it's constructed, or be interested in what the work is about.

For the next three weeks, you will use the visit to Liverpool as the basis for a series of activities and projects, so you should photograph and film as much as you can. You should also make notes/ take photos of the accompanying text to explain WHAT the work is about. Some of the work is about social injustice, global wars and instability, an energy crisis, environmental violence, economic systems crashing, racial and gender injustices. Liverpool is a place of community, of migration, of reflecting the past and more importantly moving forward. It is a place of culture, excitement, history and personality.

As part of this 3 week block, you will consider ethics, society, sustainability in a chaotic world in your own work, so look deeper than the surface of the works you see.

What work should you do?

collect information leaflets

fill the accordion book you have made with drawings, cuttings from leaflets, notes, print outs, recording the things that catch your eye. You should complete this in private study time ready for the following Wednesday's lesson. It should be packed with inspiration

You can also add images from Liverpool- architecture, people etc

put photos and videos on Tumblr ready for Wednesday

You should also visit the permanent collection at the Tate. Make sure you visit all floors

You have the afternoon to have lunch, look around the Tate and visit the Museum of Liverpool. You can also go into the Slavery Museum and Maritime Museum if you want to (all are free)

From iconic Beatles suits and Garry Christian’s famous hat and sunglasses, to a dreamy Lita Roza dress and Spice Girl Mel C’s stage costume, the gallery explores Liverpool’s enviable reputation for musical creativity.

Art Foundation Induction 2023

Induction for Art Foundation is now confirmed as Wednesday 6th September 9.00- 4.00 in F34.

On this day we will run through the course structure and year plan, give you your timetable and course handbook, and you will get to meet the rest of the group. You will do a practical project based on order/chaos, so please bring in the A6 booklet you are working on, even if it's not completed.

You will also get your college pass (photo will be taken), and you can pay in the money for the Liverpool trip into reception.

You will not be in for the rest of the week, but will have sketchbook work to do at home.

So on Wednesday 6th September, please:

go directly to F34 if you know where that is, or I will collect you from reception.

bring in your summer sketch book as you will be using this today, as well as the following week

upload your sketchbook research tasks onto Tumblr

have an A5 lined journal

have your Tumblr blog set up and the app on your phone ready to use

have your basic art kit with you- pencils, scissors etc
