Demon Slayer is about Tanjiro who's family gets slaughtered by a demon, except his sister Nezuko, who was turned into a demon, Tanjiro now seeks revenge on the demon that did this and to find a way to turn his sister back human again, to do this he finds himself climbing the ranks of the Demon Slayer Corps a group of demon-slaying experts. Demon Slayer's story, events and scenarios constantly keep you interested and excited to see what happens next, however, it feels formulaic, it never feels like anything that happens is surprising, it even feels repetitive, especially if you've seen other shounen action shows. The problem with the story extends to the characters, it feels like you've seen all these characters before. I will say that Demon Slayer does a good job making it so no two characters are even remotely alike, so it's interesting to see how some characters will interact with each other despite it feeling like you've seen all these kinds of characters before. Also, I know it's early in the show, there are going to be more seasons, and this is a plot-focused show, but there is insufficient character development among the cast. The sound and visuals are the best part of the show, Yuki Kajiura does a great job as the composer and Ufotable do a great job as usual and give this show a really unique style, it blends 2D and 3D animation beautifully, the characters will be 2D and the backgrounds and characters' abilities will be 3D, this gives the show the ability to simulate 3D camera movements and angles well, like wide-angle tracking shots, which makes the action in the show incredible. The character designs are great, attractive and unique, you could pick them out in a crowd and they are diverse as well, this combined with how different and distinct characters can feel from one another, really makes up for how shallow the characters feel. I would give Demon Slayer a 6.5/10. As beautiful as it is visually and sonically, it's lack of originality is its downfall. This problem doesn't exist if you haven't seen many shounen action shows, so give it a try if that's the case. Anime: Phantasy Star Online 2: Episode Oracle Genre: Action, Sci-fi Studio: Gonzo Source: Game Season: Fall 2019 Ep: 1-3 This is the new anime adaptation of the Phantasy Star Online 2 MMO and its not too bad actually, it's a standalone piece and you don't require any prior experience with the franchise to know what's going on. It follows Ash and Afin two trainees at this organisation known as ARKS, which is just a space ship that roams the galaxy eradicating monsters on alien planets. A ton of stuff happens, they get attacked, find a mysterious girl, uncover dark plots and so on. The plot is by far the strongest point this show has to offer, if you're someone that really values storyline above all else then I'd recommend you this show. The story is interesting, it moves at a good pace and you're never really sure what's in store for you next. It does kind of feel like the show takes a lot of liberties to move the plot forward though, which can feel forced and unnatural at times, like everyone just waits around for the next bit of 'plot' to arrive. It doesn't leave a whole lot of room for much characterisation aside from the main two characters too, and there's a ton more characters, they all end up pretty one-directional and aren't given the screen time to develop. Now I'll be honest here, I do not find this show attractive at all, the character designs, weapons, colours, the best way I can describe the way this show looks to me is just 'gaudy'. The characters' outfits look clunky, uncomfortable and have too many edges, the backgrounds are forgettable, the weapons are too big and obnoxiously blue! The characters' faces can look fine but they don't seem designed for much movement and animation, which is probably why this show doesn't move too much, even still the action scenes can be a lot of fun, though the the CGI enemy's don't make for visually appealing foes. This is show is decent man really, I recommend it, give it a shot, especially if you're the kind of person that's really into storyline and plot. Anime: Africa no Salaryman/African Office Worker Genre: Comedy, Slice of Life Studio: HOTZIPANG Source: Web Manga Season: Fall 2019 Ep: 1-4 Africa no Salaryman is a comedy show that takes place in a world were everyone is an animal. It follows our 3 main characters, a lion, a lizard and a toucan, and their daily shenanigans as office workers. The show has 30 min episodes split up so it'll be like the first half of the episode is its own short and the second half is its own short, along with some shorts in the end credits scene, this is sort of like some shows from Cartoon Network, though this show doesn't actually seem to have any kind of story arc, nor does it show any progression, it's just light fun hijinks. I would say I really like the way this show looks visually, specifically the cgi, it's very smooth and the characters move tons without feeling awkward or stiff, it's kind of goofy sometimes but that helps the show out since it is a comedy. Also I don't usually watch dubbed anime, but I watched the 4th episode dubbed and I would say I was pleasently surprised with it, it's good, but the show also suits a dub well since it doesn't make Japanese specific jokes or wordplay, it's like any old American comedy cartoon. All that said while this does feel like a cartoon network show, that takes place in Japan of course, I don't think it's a super good one, just a really average one, not super funny or anything, but it's entertaining enough. Anime: Fate/Grand Order: Absolute Demonic Front - Babylonia Genre: Action, Fantasy Studio: CloverWorks Source: Game Season: Fall 2019 Ep: 1-4 PS: You don't have to have watched any other Fate seasons or played the games to understand this show. This specific show is about two characters Ritsuka and Mash who have been traveling time collecting relics called 'Holy Grails' to stop the annihilation of humanity that these things cause in the future. To find the last Grail the characters land in the most dangerous period yet the Age of Gods, B.C. 2655 Mesopotamia. This is an Action, Fantasy show all about magic and crazy weapons and a surprisingly large amount of blood and mutilation. The action is really good too, the animation gets really aggressive, the directing fast-paced, the lighting and colors and animation of the spells and the environmental destruction and such, these all feel so massive. This show really feels cool as heck during action scenes. The sound effects also play a huge role in really filling the action, the sounds of the weapons clashing and the spells booming all sounds as ridiculous and breakneck and dangerous as they look, if not more-so. Outside of the action scenes the visuals still stay strong with great character designs and colors, everyone looks so striking and unique and vibrant. The backgrounds and baground characters have far less going on design wise, lacking far more detail and are duller in color than the named characters. The show's mix of 2D and 3D animation can also look pretty ugly sometimes. The premise of the show is interesting, but the characters don't have very original personalities so every piece of dialogue and character interaction just felt a bit too familiar, like I've seen these personality types interacting this way many times before. They are done decently well though and have things like motivations and development which is a plus. Overall definitely a show I'll watch more of, I'll give it a 7/10. This would be higher but a majority of the show is spent on its weakest aspects like its slice of life and character interaction. Not that I want more action. Anime: Special Crime Investigation Unit - Special 7 Genre: Action, Police, Fantasy Studio: Anime&Co Source: Original Season: Fall 2019 Ep: 1-4 Special 7 is a new original anime this season, the first show for the studio at that. The show takes place in a fantasy version of Tokyo filled with vampires, elves, dwarves alongside humans, but these races exist in a far more adjusted, modern day way. We follow Seiji Nanatsuki who survived a recent case of mass murder and destruction, this led him to become a detective, but just after earning his badge he's instead placed in a group of rumored riff-raff in. The show follows this group of mixed races, abilities and personalities and their daily crime fighting antics. I would definitely say that my favourite thing about the show was the look and sound of a dark and gritty detective tale with its dull and muted backgrounds and characters filled with a lot of blacks, whites and various shades of gray, and jazz tunes coloring the dialog and action. The actual designs of the characters and backgrounds though weren't amazing, but still good looking and unique, with really the biggest flaw being the lack of detail in the visuals, that along with the lack of animation really makes the show look and feel bit stiff though, not to mention that the characters also don't seem to emote much. So the show can definitely come off as a bit stale and boring visually. The characters all have distinct personalities, but you don't really get a good idea of who they are, instead of developing characters the show spent its time developing that episode's specific crime/mystery plot. Now while situations involving crime, armed robbery and explosives sound interesting, and they kind of are, they just get dulled by the lack of stakes and even motivation that the characters have for solving the crimes. When crimes do get solved one character will just pull all the answers out of nowhere and what really adds to the lack of stakes is just how bloodless the miniscule amounts of action is. 6/10, the show offers interesting ideas in its look and premise, but really comes off as monotone in its execution. Anime: Azur Lane Genre: Action, Military Studio: Bibury Animation Studios Source: Game Ep: 1 Humanity fought over control over the oceans, until an alien race appeared with vastly superior technology and drove humanity out of the seas. So in order to battle the Sirens humanity forged a global organization alliance named Azur Lane, made out of 4 factions. Now a while later Azur Lanes factions battle each other for opposing beliefs. This show is strange man, the entire cast is female, the story is convoluted and has too much going on, the characters are generic, there are way too many of them. The show's answer to this? An episode of waifus, turning aircraft carriers a planes into weapons and duking it out. I'm down. This shows character designs are great... Well, they can also kinda suck, but that's better than average I guess. A character can go from looking gorgeous or adorable, to looking just kinda wonky and misshapen, the characters also don't emote much, but then again they don't move much at all period, but that's the 2D animation. A large chunk of this show is 3D or CGI, almost all the backgrounds, the vehicles and the weapons, and they look decent, my biggest complaint about the CGI would also be about the show's entire aesthetic period. Everything looks too clean and lacks a lot of detail. The colours and light are great though, the show is bright, vivid and really pretty in that regard. One more complaint though, the sound effects can be abnoxious as hell, especially during battles where all the explosions and gunfire just sound like American movie trailer sound effects. Anime: Choujin Koukousei-tachi wa Isekai demo Yoyuu de Ikinuku you desu!/CHOYOYU! High School Prodigies Have It Easy Even in Another World! Genre: Fantasy, Isekai Studio: Project No.9 Source: Light Novel Ep:1 This show is about 7 high school students, that are, the best doctor, the best politician, the best inventor, the best journalist, the best entrepreneur, the best swordsman and the best magician on earth. They all get into a plane crash and wake up in a fantasy world with beastmen and dragons. The show is about how these characters and their extraordinary abilities interact with this world. Man, I lost my suspension of disbelief pretty quickly watching this one. This show is standard generic isekai with all its tropes, except instead of 1 overpowered protagonist, there's 7 of them, all the obnoxious fanservice, the animal people, generic character types, generic fantasy world, it's all here. It doesn't even have much going visually, generic fantasy world, generic fantasy background characters and races, and generic large breasted females, nothing looks bad, just unexciting, the CGI is a bit wonky, but it doesn't come up often. The main characters are distinct enough from each other and have far more interesting designs and brighter colours than everything and everyone else. Really the only thing that could possibly pose for excitement in this show is what the main characters do in this fantasy world, but the problem with these shows will always be that there's just nothing that could possibly challenge the main characters, there will never be tension. I suppose some people like that kind of thing, if you do, this show is probably pretty good for you. TV Series: Peaky Blinders With the recent release of the 5th season of 'Peaky Blinders'. I found myself hearing and seeing more and more about it, eventually leading to me checking the first season out. I see what all the hype was about. Peaky Blinders boasts a very interesting story taking place in 1919 Bermingham, England, following the tale of Thomas Shelby as he leads his family's gang, the Peaky Blinders, and their various criminal activities. Now whilst the the first season isn't perfect, most of its downside for me coming in the form of the cinematography, the backdrop of the streets of Bermingham looking a bit too much like a set and not lived in, though nowhere near enough of a complaint to detract from the characters and the story which were quite a standout. TV Series: Fleabag Fleabag is the origin of my depression... Brilliant show though. British comedy-drama on BBC and Amazon Prime by Phoebe Waller-Bridge who brings the show multi award worthy writing, being the show's screenwriter, and acting, portraying the titular character. Fleabag follows a witty and humorous women as she navigates the insanity of her family life, tragedy, her own mental state and her very active sex life. Why Is It Always Anime vs Manga This isn't something that only happens is anime, this comes up with any adaptation of anything, a movie adaptation of a game, a series adaptation of a book, an anime adaptation of a manga. So why do adaptations exist? A few reasons, some popular ones being that the audience of one thing will immediately make your adaptation of that thing successful just from making it, it doesn't even have to be good, there are tonnes of examples I don't even have to name drop, another reason is that someone is just a big fan of something and wants to make that thing in another medium, a more honerable reason. And thus the biggest pain in the ass in anime is born. What? A massive manga is getting an anime adaptation? Manga readers fill forums with Hype (OMG, this is like the best anything ever made). The anime comes out. Doesn't finish the story. Something changes. And so on. I can't count how many visual novels I've played, light novels and manga I've read just because a half finished anime of these came out. On one hand I guess it's cool that I've read this much manga, on the other, I'd rather the anime was just good. The Seasonal Anime Problem, Binge Culture, Otaku Culture vs Netflix Honestly one of the things I'm most grateful for, is the internet, giving rise to numerous forums, blogs and websites that allow us anime fans to come together and talk about the show's we love. The most consistent topic by far among these sources is Seasonal Anime, when a new season arrives so does a whole batch of new anime shows airing weekly anywhere from Monday to Sunday. While for the most part these new shows bring forth a rise from the fandom as people are excited to share the hype of a new anime and the rollercoaster of airing episodes. Really the only downside to seasonal anime is the watching weekly episodes part, outside of these conversations about airing shows there is no upside to watching anime weekly. Which brings me to something else the internet brought with it, binging. Binging is massive amongst anyone that watches series period, anime or otherwise, and with the rise of Netflix, everyones binging fantasies have been brought to life. If you remember, when the first few waves of Netflix released anime came, anime fans weren't happy, the idea of shows not being released as they're made, but when they're finished, meant that there were no weekly conversations anymore, no hype, no weekly episode analysis, but once the show's were eventually released it was of they'd never even been held back. If it's not apparent, I much prefer binging to weekly watching, but I also like taking shop in anime sites about newly released shows, I want the best of both, the only way to get it? Have a way that every anime in a season can be held back until its finished, then sent out to the public in a widely accessible way, with TV dying out and internet streaming taking over, it seems obvious that streaming is the answer. Series: One Punch Man Season 2 & My Hero Academia Season 3 I didn't think that season 2 of OPM was as good as season 1. Why? A decrease in the quality of the character designs? A decrease in the quality of the animation? No. Well of course these contributed, but not as much as this. One Punch Man Season 2 gave us far less information in the same amount of time as season 1, after season 2 it felt as if almost nothing changed and little was established. I had a very similar feeling as I did to the 3rd season of My Hero actually. My Hero Academia Season 3 was almost entirely a rehash of seasons prior, no growth in characters or expansion of events. Both of these shows seemingly rehash everything the previous seasons did, but I less detail, making it feel like filler, but then add 1 or 2 things to make it seem like the watch was worth it. My Hero Academia, All Might vs All For One, One Punch man, little things like introduction to some heros like King, and The Hero Killer. Take these away and both of these show's seasons seem like pure filler. In any case I'm kinda bummed I didn't like OPM Season 2.
