“We never really knew each other, did we?” he whispers. She doesn’t lift her eyes from her knuckles rapping her knee in a repeating pattern. “I guess not,” she shrugs non-commitally. “Maybe it would have changed this,” he said. She meets his eyes and he realises he never knew there was brown mixed in with the green of them. “Maybe.” And even though he didn’t say it out loud he thinks she knows that what he really meant was “Maybe it would have made you stay. She turns to leave but his voice makes her turn back one final time. “What’s your favourite colour?” A sad, small smile creeps across her face. “Blue.” And then she leaves and he’s speaking to the silence when he says, “Mine too.”
