Footsteps in the Sand
scarredlitany:
Amaljâaa. Gareth knew there was a good chance they would encounter the beastmen along the way, but thinking about the high likelihood of just the two of them facing them plucked at his nerves. The last time he had faced them, he had been taken captive, relying on Ryuu to help rescue him from their clutches. He knew they would have to help the Uâ tribe with them, but as a group it would be much easier to fight them.
âIs there no way we can circle around their territory?â he questioned. Surely there had to be some other way. The Uâ tribe must have paths and routes to evade the beastmen.
The heat was scratching at his skin despite his tanned complexion. The dry desert heat was still difficult for him to adjust to, and it was mixing uncomfortably with the tension already settling into his muscles. He took a breath, let it out slowly. This was going to be different. He hadnât experienced any visions; it was highly unlikely that the Amaljâaa were attempting to summon Ifrit again.
âYou have had some experience fighting them?â Gareth asked tentatively, pushing the headscarf up slightly as it slipped down into his eyes.
âUnfortunately no, the only way will be to go through Zanrâakâ After answering his question she paused thinking for a moment. âWe can travel closer to the west cliff side as it might make it easier to avoid being seenâÂ
Uâmei couldnât help but notice how slightly uncomfortable the other looked from the rising heat, he did say he was from Gridania but she didnât think the two areasâ climates were that much different from each other despite there being more of a breeze in the Black Shroud.Â
There was a subtle twitch in the corners of the miqoâteâs lips at Garethâs next question. âI donât think thereâs even one hunter who hasnât crossed paths with the Amaljâaa,â she said as they passed through the gates and headed south.Â
âWhat about yourself?â She then asked curious if he had even set foot in Thanalan before now.Â

Footsteps in the Sand
Seeing confusion in the miqoâteâs face, Garethâs brows furrowed apologetically. âIâm from Gridania,â he began, words that were technically only a half-truth. âI believe I may have seen you there before. I too have studied the lance,â he explained.
Remembering the time he had first ventured into Thanalan, Gareth found himself reflexively checking his belt for his water canteen. Full. He then quickly drew a hempen bandanna from his belt, tying it so it covered the top of his head completely. With his Ishgardian origins, he needed all the protection from the desert sun he could possibly equip himself with. Certain he was ready, he gave the woman a small smile. âWhenever you are ready to leave, please lead the way.â
Brushing stray hairs back from his forehead, and tucking them underneath the protective cloth, he glanced towards his comrade, a thought crossing him.
âAh, apologies, but is there anything I should know about the Uâ tribe prior to meeting them?â he questioned. He had met miqoâtes before, of course, but not until he had left Ishgard five years ago. He knew little of their culture, particularly within tribes that likely were far more traditional than the miqoâtes who had integrated themselves into the populations of Eorzean cities.
Uâme thought for a moment as she took a better look at him, Had there been a white haired hyur at the guild? She never really bothered making herself known to the other members as she was just there to learn more on how to use the pole arm in combat, not to make friends. Though somehow that didnât stop the Scions from seeking her out and recruiting her.
She watched as Gareth began to ready himself for their journey in the desert, at least he is prepared she thought as she noticed the full canteen and that he had brought something to protect him self against the harsh Thanalan sun.
She was surprised by his next question to her. âThere really isnât much to know about my tribe, itâs basically just a simple village in the desert.â Uâme answered truthfully before beginning to make her way out of the tavern and into the streets of Ulâdah heading towards the Gate of Thal Â
âWe will have to go through Amalâjaa territory to get to the Forgotten Springsâ She stated to the other. âItâs possible that we might be able to avoid them but we might also run into a patrol.â
Footsteps in the Sand
Apprehension and intrigue mingled within Gareth as the details of his assignment were conveyed to him. Not so long ago, the Warrior of Light had secured a partnership for the Scions with the Uâ tribe. Gareth had made excursions into the Thanalan deserts before, of course. Alongside certain comrades he had faced the Amalâjaa before, too. But he had never been quite as far as the depths of the Sagolii, nor had he encountered the Uâ tribe. It may have been five years since he had stepped foot in Ishgard, but as one born within its cold stone walls, he had little knowledge of the customs of such groups of people. He was aware that life in Thanalan was a battle, and that the Amalâjaa were a constant issue, but other than that he was, in his opinion, frustratingly ignorant.
The Uâ tribe was asking for help â apparently quite the sign of trust â and he had been requested to go attend to their needs. If he handled the situation wrongly, would the tribe lose respect for the Scions? It was a worry that niggled at him. Thankfully, however, he was not to go to them alone. It just so happened that one of his fellow Scions had been born into the tribe, and he was to accompany her. This fact helped ease the weight of his concerns.
Gareth moved through the Waking Sands, looking for his comrade. Entering the room that branched out on the right side of the hall, he began to survey the small cluster of Scions. At last, he spotted a miqoâte woman with a lance on her back. âGreetings,â he called out somewhat tentatively as he approached her. When she turned around, he smiled lightly. âYou must be Uâme Natski? Iâm Gareth Hyland, your partner for the mission at Forgotten Springs.â
He blinked, a little surprised as he took in her features. There was something incredibly familiar about her. It took a second for where he had seen her to occur to him. âAh, forgive me, but did you ever train at the Lancerâs Guild in Gridania?â
Some time had pass since she had met up with her fellow Scions in the Waking Sands to discuss the current issue that they were to help with, of course Uâme being born in the Sagolli already assumed that the problem would be, but once she heared that her own tribe was asking for help from the Scions because of a rising threat from the Amalâjaa caused the miqoâte to become slightly worried. Of course her people had scuffles with the beast tribe before but they must be doing something to have the tribe ask for help.
Uâme continued to stand in silence among the group as they made light conversation while they continued to wait for the Scion who would be joining her to the Forgotten Springs. A hyur man, so she had been told by the others, name was Gareth or something. Well he must be pretty good to be chosen to help fight against the Amalâjaa she thought to herself.Â
Her ear flicked slightly at the sound of approaching footsteps, and just as she turned to look up there was a hyur already greeting her. So this was the other Scion who would be accompanying her, he looked quite capable to hold out in a fight with others. Uâme was about to say something to the other but he had beaten her to it.Â
âUm, yes?â she answered confused as to why he needed to know that information or why he even knew that she had been there.Â
