Final Designs

After many developments, refinements, and decisions, my final poster/brochure design mixes Paula Scher and Erick Spiekermann's design style. I was mostly inspired by Scher's manipulation with type and Spiekermann design in terms of hierarchy and legibility.

The main challenges I faced within this project was refining my work. In the development process, I found it hard to focus on one idea as I wanted to explore and experiment with many styles of manipulation. This slowed down my progress and began to be off tasked.

Overall, I am content with the outcome of my poster/brochure as it is exciting and effective in terms of communication. Through this project I have learned and improved my skills in photoshop, indesign and illustrator. This has taught me the importance of the design elements and principles when design a poster and brochure. It is the small details that matter in which make a design more better and cohesive.

Brochure Design

On the first day of the design for print class, we explored and experimented with different ways to fold a 16-panel brochure prototype. The two folds we covered was the accordion fold and the gatefold. This exercise helped me get a fair idea of the placement and function of my brochure design. I plan to make my brochure design an accordion fold because of easy it is to function and how it can become a display when standing on its own.

In this brochure development, I aimed to make it similar to my poster design by adding texture within the background of the top and bottom part of the page. I also tried exploring with abstract shapes and tables.

Peer Feedback

From my peer feedback session, what I need to improve on is my composition, word sizing and background colour. They found the black textured background to be to distracting and disrupts the legibility of the text. This aspect within my brochure design is what I need to work on for my next steps.

Brochure Exploration - Layout

My main goal with the layout design above was legibility and simplicity. In my opinion, I find that the composition and colour scheme of the brochure create a  a sense of harmony that overall balance the weight of the layout well. However, I also find that it needs another small design element to add weight make and elevate the design to complement the poster style. 

Next Steps

My next steps to improve me layout is to try exploring with shape and colour to make my layout design more effective and eye-catching.

Brochure Exploration

In the brochure exploration above, I tried to experiment with a vibrant reddish colour and a simple layout. The reason why I chose to have a vibrant background, is because I wanted to create contrast with my poster side. However, I find this colour harsh and distracting. It may be better to incorporate this colour within the text of the brochure as it will make the text stand out without being too harsh on the eyes. 

In terms of layout, I quite like how the images and text are positioned together as it looks cohesive and united. I also like the minimal approach as it really focuses on the idea of simplicity. 

Next Steps

My next steps to improve my brochure design is to work on my colour scheme and try and experiment more with the layout.

Brochure Research

In search for Brochure design inspiration, I found these minimalist, Swiss design brochure concepts. I find that this type of brochure style will complement my poster design because of the simplicity of it. It uses a selective range of colour and favours communication above all else in terms of hierarchy and legibility. These are some design elements that I can explore and experiment with in my brochure side.

My next steps in terms of my materials and media progress are to start working on my brochure design through experimenting with layout on the indesign software.

This map above is a style that I want to explore with my map design. I like how sleek, easy to read and minimal it is. I also like the use of colour, line and bold flat shapes. I find that this style will complement my brochure/poster design because of minimal yet effective it is.

In the poster exploration progress above, I tried to develop my initial ideas with type, positive/negative space and the colours of red, black and white. I wanted to challenge myself to freely explore and not be afraid with the manipulation of the mesh tool. I did not want to restrict myself from breaking design principles and rules that challenged the overuse of distortion and composition.

  I like the weirdness of the ‘Typografika’22′ and selective colour scheme. However, I need to improve the composition and hierarchy of the text as it disrupts the flow due to the quite awkward placement.

Experimenting with Type

Typography Exploration

Exploring and experimenting with different ways to distort and manipulate type resulted in weird and exciting designs. I tried to find a style that incorporated and depicted some aspects of the eight designers through using the mesh tool, gradient, bold type, thin type, clean geometric type and decorative type. Overall, I like the Paula Scher typestyle and want to develop this further, as it combines both bold/light elements into one cohesive, simple and striking design.

This is a design style that I could develop further as I find it intriguing, bold and eye-catching.

Lecture Feedback

From my feedback session, the design errors I need to improve within my poster is my colour scheme of red on black colour, title legibility, type placement and the conflicting boldness of the Basic Commercial LT Com Black type. The elements and compositional arrangement seems to be clashing with each other, which becomes distracting and takes away the attention from the main title. However, the manipulation of the ‘22 is interesting and can be bigger and explored more in terms of composition.

My first poster design was inspired by Paula Scher’s manipulation on typography/lines and Swiss design. I used the Basic Commercial LT Com Black type, mesh and the selective Swiss colour scheme of red, black and white, with the main purpose of creating strong contrast. Through this design, I aimed to emphasise simplicity and clarity only focusing on the typography.

Poster Research - Swiss Design 

In search for more minimalist poster designs I began looking into Swiss Design. I find these Armin Hofmann and Swissted poster designs simple yet impactful through the use of strong contrast, abstract shapes, lines, points and minimal/thin typography. These are design principles that I want to explore and experiment within my final poster achieve a modern approach that values legibility and ‘communication above all else’.

Whilst searching for inspiration for my poster design, I came across some of Paula Scher’s designs. Scher’s posters are eye catching and sparked my interest as a viewer through the use minimal colours, bold/thin/distorted typography, imagery, and the exploration of positive and negative space. In addition, although most of her designs are striking and bold it still contains a good sense of legibility. 

Next Steps

In terms of my Poster, I plan to explore, experiment and implement these  elements to achieve good flow, legibility, hierarchy.

Erik Spiekermann is a German typographer, designer and writer. He is an honorary professor at the University of the Arts Bremen and Art Center College of Design.

Erik studied art history at Berlin's Free University, funding himself by running a letterpress printing press in the basement of his house. In this workshop Erik will be demonstrating some letterpress work in the relief printing studio at AUT.

Design Style 

Spiekermann’s design style is influenced by Swiss Design and is inspired by Akzidenz-Grotes and his German fore fathers known as the 'the big four' - “Herbert Bayer, the Bauhaus modernist, Jan Tschichold, the grid-based “New Typographer,” Willy Fleckhaus, the outspoken iconoclast, and Otl Aicher, the purpose-driven democratic designer”. 

His works focus on clarity and grid-based design as they have a system of order to communicate clearly.

Jessica Nicole Hische is an American letterer, illustrator, and type designer. She is best known for her personal projects, 'Daily Drop Cap' and the “Should I Work for Free” flowchart. She published In Progress: See Inside a Lettering Artist's Sketchbook and Process, from Pencil to Vector in September 2015, which gives insight to her creative process and work she has completed as a hand lettering artist. She has spoken at over 100 conferences worldwide, but splits her time between San Francisco, CA and Brooklyn, NY.

Design Style 

I don’t first draw the entire alphabet in the style I wish, then position the letters to spell out the word. I draw the word as a unique image. This means that in a lot of lettering, if you rearrange the letters it would look pretty terrible—the art is meant to be seen and used in that specific configuration and that configuration only.

Paula Scher is an American graphic designer, painter and art educator in design. She also served as the first female principal at Pentagram, which she joined in 1991. Scher studied at the Tyler School of Art, in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1970. In 1972, she was hired by CBS Records to the advertising and promotions department. After two years, she left CBS Records to pursue a more creative endeavour at a competing label, Atlantic Records, where she became the art director, designing her first album covers. A year later Scher returned to CBS as an art director for the cover department. Her designs are recognised with four Grammy nominations. She is also credited with reviving historical typefaces and design styles.

Design Style 

Scher’s design work was inspired by Constructivism and ’30s through Art Nouveau and influenced her style to revolve around the infusion of imagery and decorative typography.
