SOUNDBOARD - KEEP YOURSELF IN THE MIX
Soundboard is a website aimed at people in the music industry wanting to keep on the track to success by being well organised and ahead of the game!
Access in minutes on your phone or tablet device and never miss a rehearsal or forget to pickup that new equipment again.
User Case Scenario [Walkthrough]
Paul is running around trying to get organised before his bands next gig. He has a bunch of things he needs to do, but can't quite remember what they were and is having trouble getting in contact with his other band members. He pulls out his phone and loads up Soundboard.
He enters his user information and presses login.
He is logged in and redirected to the home page. He can now quickly access whatever information he needs at the touch of a button.
He clicks on the "To Do" box to find out what jobs are on the list.
Paul scans the list and notices his band members have added some items. This is convenient as he does not have to get in contact with them directly now to find out what needs to be done. He has completed the first item on the list, so he clicks to remove it.
He is now aware of the jobs he needs to get done that day, then opens up the Notices to see if there's anything he's missed.
Paul is now up to date on the band and what needs to get done, and has done so in only a few minutes. He can how navigate to the bottom of the screen where he can logout, put his phone away and get started for the day.
Paul is redirected back to the login screen, ready for next time.
Final Thoughts & Reflections
Overall the Soundboard website is an idea that aimed to bring a simple tool to the music industry that could be used by managers and band members to keep track of their daily schedule, upcoming events and progress. With more production it could be a well rounded application that could assist in daily lives of those who use it, and save time for the most important things, like playing music and building a fan base.
The hifi prototype shows a basic outline of the website in use, although a more in-depth example could have been demonstrated through further development.
Future Opportunities
Future opportunities for Soundboard are very exciting. Once the website was to finish development and begin gaining users it would be widely advertised to bands and the music scene for its ease of use and convenience for keeping track the life of a band. More features could be added such as integration with Facebook and other popular social networking sites so that all information coming from there could be accessed in the one place via Soundboard. This would provide the music industry with a one stop place to keep track of all things social network and organisation.
UI Explanations
When designing the user interface for Soundboard I had three key themes in mind - Minimalistic, easy to use, functional. To keep with this idea the website was designed around the idea that everything was to be accessible from one main home page. By utilising expanding divs for content, the user is able to remain on one page and have quick access to any information needed.
UI Experimentation
The user interface for Soundboard was kept true to the original designs, however some experimentation went into the way that it was laid out during coding. As previously mentioned, the login screen was adjusted to suit a more traditional style of layout, but is still the same process as the initial design. There was a lot of experimentation that went into the coding of the resizing tiles, firstly to get them to switch between divs, and then to animate the sequence also.
Development continues - Login screen
After developing the basis for the home (index) page I moved on to making the login screen. This was a pretty straight forward process using jQuery and I was able to style it to a similar style as the one proposed. There were some differences, however the changes were made in order for the style of the login to stay traditional to other login interfaces found on popular websites that users could be assumed to be familiar with. (See below)

Development Begins
To begin the construction of this website I began with a simple html and css layout of my main index page (See below). I decided that it would be best to make the tiles using images as they would be simply clickable links to open up their content. I kept the design the same as the previous iteration so it was easy to layout the page as I wanted. I set the tiles to 50% so that they may be later expanded to 100% to fill the width of the page. The header and footer logo were inserted using a web font and the decoration was easy to construct since I had kept the initial designs simple and minimalistic.
PART TWO – Development
Coding has now begun for making Soundboard a reality. The following posts will explain the UI development, experimentation with design and layout and some insight into the coding process. I will also cover ideas on future opportunities for Soundboard and reflect upon how the project went since the first iterations.

Project Proposal - Soundboard
Concept & Aims
Soundboard is an organisation application, designed for use by bands to keep track of all their upcoming events, progress and any other information that may be needed at a glance. It features intuitive flat UI design and the ability for each member to login personally and monitor the band’s progress in a private social media platform.
After doing research into organisation apps and websites that can help you to form a band and keep on the path to success, I found that there wasn’t much available. There are many programs available to help monitor tasks, and a few to get started with making a band, but there was a gap when it came to combining the two. My aim was to a companion service that was user-friendly and genuinely helpful in the long term.
Between gigs, rehearsal, writing, interviews etc., it can be difficult to keep up with times and dates, and it is even harder ensuring your band members are in the know with all the updates also. Soundboard plans to solve communication problems and save time so that more focus can be put into playing music and having fun.
Project Stakeholders
The main stakeholders for this project are band members, the music industry and creators of other organisational applications and social network websites. Soundboard was designed to work as an all in one integrated organisation tool, removing the need to use various other social and organisational tools.
Although this can potentially take away from the amount of users that these platforms have, future plans for Soundboard will include integration with these, therefore working with them and not against them. This could be implemented in the form of live updates sent from a Facebook page through to Soundboard, acting as a link between the user and Facebook, rather than make them redundant.
User Case Scenario
Jason is in a band with 4 of his friends. They formed about 2 months ago, and they are still trying to get on their feet. He finds it difficult to keep everyone updated, as they are not always available on Facebook or through text, and they all have other jobs and commitments. He needs something to simplify the process or organising his band and looks to Soundboard.
Soundboard provides him and his other band members an all in one platform to communicate across and keep updated the bands upcoming events, practice times and progress.
His band members are often running late or forget about practice times and meetings so makes sure he updates their Soundboard regularly. Soundboard is able to provide his fellow band mates with all the information they need at a glance all from the home screen, so that they may save time on unnecessary communication errors and avoid missing opportunities.
Project Architecture
Login/Sign Up
This is the page that will be welcome the user with as they enter the website. Pretty simple login page which will then direct to the bands home page.
Home
The home page is the main interface that users will interact with. All windows on this page will simply expand and minimise when clicking on the arrow on the bottom of the tile, making it simple to use and lowering load time and lag when navigating through each section.
To Do
This page is a straight forward to do list, where users are able to create new items, mark them as completed or delete them.
Notices
Similar to many other social sites, the notices section is for posing a general question or updating the group on some information. Other users within the band are then able to comment and discuss, as well as post their own notice.
Upcoming
The upcoming section is essentially a calendar for future events and occasions such as gigs and rehearsals. This ensures all band members are aware of important dates and never miss practice again.
Messages
The messages feature will be similar to inbox style emails sent between two people. This will be for contacting band members directly.
Stats
Infographics that will be updated based on data that is collected through the application to inform where the majority of time is spent and on what types of activities etc.
Contacts
The contacts section is a great tool for keeping track of all the important people in the bands network, as well as a place to access quick information such as phone numbers and such.
Bio
Contains information about each individual band member and a summary of their role in the band.
Settings
Adjust settings and account details.

Overall Soundboard is intended as an all in one organisation companion that can help with the success and good will of bands young and old.
