Project #5

A series of word art. I decided to do this project a little different, I just chose cute things that make me happy to turn into some form of word art. I often times post cute messages and such on the bulletin board at my apartment complex so this project worked out great for that!

Reading Response: Robert Montgomery

What I found really interesting about this article is the fact that this artist actually took inspiration from Jenny Holzer, he even said she is where it all started for him. I think it’s awesome that literally what she wanted to do by putting those private messages into public settings, really did work. You now have artists who have built their own career off of her stepping outside the box and making her messages public and in public spaces. Using billboards is I think a brilliant idea, I think it would be nice for a change to see something like these artworks rather than pointless ads that aren’t trying to better you. I also love that Montgomery creates all his own poems, it would be really easy to take someone else’s words and create a piece from that, but he does it fully from his own emotions and thoughts which is awesome.

Reading Response: Jenny Holzer

The way this article starts out I knew I was going to enjoy it, as soon as Holzer said she wanted to create something even non art people would understand I was intrigued. Mostly, I enjoyed her talking about moving to outside artwork or more of an installation type of work rather than paintings or in studio pieces. To me, her doing this proves she really did want to spread messages that weren’t made just for art people. When you want to create meaningful artwork, a lot of times only other artists or art people are going to see it because they are going to be the only people following your socials, or going to art exhibits and museums. What Holzer did is bring that meaningful artwork to areas where they can’t be chosen to see. They are in your face, when you’re driving to work, walking the dog, road tripping, traveling, etc. You don’t have to be looking for artwork to see her art.

Project #4: Performance Art

My theme was literally “to preform” and I think singing and dancing are the first things that popped into my head when thinking “to perform”.

I am in no way a singer, and this is the first time my voice has come out of the shower or jamming out in the car so bare with me people! I took this project as a challenge to push myself outside of my comfort zone and to really partake in performing for an audience (audience being you!) I hope I don’t make anyones ears bleed!

The Artist is Present Response

When watching Marina Abramovic I felt like I could really feel her emotion, and as an artist I understood what she was talking about. It made me think that sometimes like she talked about people being behind phone screens and sending texts rather than saying whatever they have to say in person, that artist a lot of time do the same thing with their work. I feel like sometimes artists hide behind their work, and allow you to perceive it how you will. Abramovic is becoming that artwork rather than hiding behind it, and I think the way people choose to interact with that gives you a sense of how comfortable we are just hiding behind things in our society today.

Reading response #4

Reading this article actually made me pretty upset, mostly because I think performance art has an extensive history that wasn’t discussed. Goldberg talks about Da Vinci and Picasso using performance art, however never mentions African Performance art. I find it kind of insulting that performance art was and still is a major part of society and culture in African countries, was frowned upon and not considered “real art” by Europeans yet is being discussed for it’s use by Europeans? No shame on choosing this article for us to read, I just find the writer to being leaving out details of the important history of performance art.

I did mine vanishing and becoming video by taking clips from videos and integrating them together, movies and intertwining vanishing and becoming something new when all placed together.

Vanishing & Becoming Reading Response

I want to be super honest here, this reading was really hard for me to understand. Just when I thought I had some inkling of what was going on, information came into play that I didn’t get... :)

But with the fact that I didn’t understand, I did learn a thing or two. For one, I think the beginning of this article and the discussion of art attempting to escape death was super interesting and a side of things I’ve never given much thought to. With reading this, I realized that is totally the case and obviously the fact that we have art history classes proves that it works. Second, the three senses of projection and the connection of that to how we view the world and how we analyze humanity was super interesting. This is one of the portions of the reading where I got lost a lot but I have appreciation for the amount of thought behind creating art and the representation and projection of humanity, within that artwork. After all, we create artwork to feel something or make someone else feel something.

Chapter 6 Reading Response

While reading this chapter I was fascinated by the creative process behind electronic and video art, and other non traditional forms of art. My talent falls under graphite and colored pencil drawing, and up until this semester I hadn’t strayed too far from that. I’ve never been able to fully understand the concept of representing time within my artwork, and am now realizing that might just be because I’ve never opened myself up to the artwork in which the representation of time is thoroughly important. The depiction and inclusion of time doesn’t need to in the form of something so upfront like a clock, hourglass, etc. It can be implied, subtle things that shape the viewer to seeing that inclusion of time. I always saw time represented in film works, or photography but never realized the different ways it can be included in paintings, performance art, sculpture, etc.

Project #2- The Loop

I decided to do my series on something I really care about and see everyday. My cat Noodle. She’s always moving, playing and making me laugh. This project wasn’t only fun for me, but incorporated my everyday life into it. I feel that these pictures really show her personality and the way that we interact together. She is first pet that is completely mine and I’ve very proud of that. I think it makes me growing as a person and becoming responsible. I find the mood of these to be innocent and cozy.

The Loop Project (#2)-

I decided to do these GIFs on various weather types (and one fire) because I didn’t want to do any movie GIFs because I thought a lot of other people would do that subject (and I also couldn’t think of a good movie to get GIFs from). I also really value dynamic weather because I’m originally from California, so something other than sunshine is just really awesome to me.

I also included one of fire because it can be really beautiful to look at, but super destructive if not contained. I honestly think that might be really metaphoric about certain things in life, but that’s not the point of this assignment to get into that.

I also thought these GIFs would just be really nice and calming to have on my computer. Most of these GIFs are from calming sounds videos.

Project #2 - The Loop (forever) / Artist Statement

GIFs are a really interesting idea. They easily grab the viewers’ attention and hold it for just long enough to get the intended message across. But the trick is being able to actually do that. By making my own GIFs I got to experience what it is like to create them. And it was surprisingly hard.

My theme was famous moments from the character Violet in the Incredibles 2 movie, and this proved more complex then I originally thought. I needed to slice the video short enough to be catchy, but also had to make sure that someone seeing it for the first time could still appreciate the humor or epic “superhero” move. The real struggle was starting and stoping the GIF at the right moments to give enough context, be quick, and still deliver the key moment.

I discovered that making GIFs is tricky and certainly not for everyone. But in the end, I really enjoyed doing it for the experience and inside look on how it’s done.

Haunting of Hill House Gif Series

For this project I wanted to make gifs that stood out from the rest and spoke for themselves. With this being said, I chose a great TV series in my opinion to help make this project beautiful. Haunting of Hill House I think is the perfect oxymoron of beautifully sorrowful. Making a forever looping gif is the perfect way to capture a feeling, a moment, or a scene of something that you want someone to internalize. I feel as if gifs can be viewed a memories good or bad. To me sometimes I have good memories that will loop over and over again in my head and the same goes with bad memories or even thoughts and I feel as if this gif series captures these bad thoughts/memories. Along with this I think that Haunting of Hill House’s scary scenes make for amazing and thought provoking gifs. Ultimately I feel as if I have become a part of a beautiful new community of art and a new movement that I never thought of before. Making gifs is such a unique and beautiful art.

Project #2 Artist Statement

I chose to stick with the theme I created within my first GIF for exercise 2, I selected 10 frames from the Billie Eilish music video Bury A Friend and turned them into GIF’s. I chose this music video because the repetition that is created through the flickering lights, and creepy movements that are shown in each GIF. I really love these 10 images and how they work collaboratively together, to feed into the eerie feeling that each gives individually they also collectively create a story of their own. You can see the rhythm they create as you scroll from one to the next, I have to say I really enjoy the outcome of this project.
