✎ | muses i think could actually hang in a tadc verse for at least a while: bellatrix (it’s funny + her grip on reality is loose enough that i don’t think it would be THAT distressing honestly until she started feeling weird and guilty about not being forthcoming about the kind of person she was). misty quigley (she’d be annoying about enjoying until she rly, RLY didn’t). morticia addams (it’s just another day innit. she’s been a cartoon before who gaf). the baker’s wife (is it really that different from living in a tragic musical?). miranda hilmarson (she’d have multiple breakdowns but overall i think she’d take ragatha’s route of trying too hard to be rly, RLY nice and sunny about it).

The question--simply, ingenuously put, with the telling tug of a smile at one corner of Lana's mouth--snaps whatever is rigid between them. Larissa laughs, a sound that's half a sigh, as she stretches out her legs toward the glowing warmth of the hearth. "By all means, Miss Winters."

She heaves herself back onto her feet and moves toward the sideboard again, locating a brass ashtray and bringing it back to Lana, where she poses it on the broad arm of her chair. Now, she supposes, she might as well, and as she sits back down, she reaches up to her hair and starts to take out pins. The gradual slackening of the mass of stiff locks musts be something of what a circus elephant feels as its shackles and ornaments are cut away.

She's had no allies in this half-cocked quest of hers. Mayor Walker, yes, because she pays him, and on occasion, she will acknowledge her concerns to a close staff member or two, but none other. There's no partner in this. She supposes that Lana Winters might be one, if she allows it; after all, it might be the only way to keep the woman from going rogue, running after Hydes in the middle of the night.

"I'll tell you something of Nevermore's history, to start," she says. "Then, I suppose, you may ask away." A hank of hair comes down to fall against her cheek. "The academy was founded in 1791, only just after Vermont became a state. It was then called the Putnam School. In the period after the Revolutionary War, there was a great need for stability, normalcy, and a degree of rationalism, given the principles of the new government's founders. The Putnam School was a solution, by the abnormal, for the abnormal, to protect their own."

Her hair finally falls down, all of a piece. She shakes it out. "Jericho has an extensive history with the strange, as you may or may not know; it was an appropriate location. We've had numerous alumni you would recognize--our most famous, of course, being Edgar Allan Poe; his chequered history at the University of Virginia and West Point is a pure fabrication to cover the time that he was attending Nevermore, which was then Putnam. Though, I must say, his truthful history does remain chequered. I myself am a former student."

Hair down, shoes off, wine warming in her belly, Larissa feels as relaxed as she possibly can be, and as generous. She gestures. "When you're ready, Miss Winters."

Miss Weems’ laugh, levity shepherding an exhale of relief, catches against Lana’s intrigue like a doorhandle in a coat pocket, the sudden halt and stretch of backward second glances just the same. She hadn’t expected her to laugh. She hadn’t expected for her laugh to be the pressure valve of the entire room either, but she finds herself at last able to take a breath that isn’t forced.

It isn’t until now, watching Larissa Weems stand to cross the room again with the telltale stiffness of a long and tiring day, that Lana begins to notice her own discomfort: the skin of her knees stings beneath a crust of damp earth and dried blood caked into the ruined webbing of her nylons, the balls of her feet and the backs of her heels ache with the promise of blisters, her scalp tingles with the unpleasant sensation of a foreign object stuck somewhere in her disheveled hair. There’s a frown as she glances down at herself, the state of her skirt and shoes enough to tell her all she needs to know about the image the rest of her appearance must cut in the office’s lavish interior.

Removing her gloves to fish for the twig snared at the back of her hair gives her excuse enough not to have to look at Miss Weems so deliberately placing her gaudy ashtray there on the arm of her fine leather chair where Lana now sits, soiling the stitching with the grimy evidence of selfish disregard. A crease forms between Lana’s brows as the offending stick is placed in that open brass palm.

When she looks up again, cigarette smoldering mercifully between her lips, she has to exhale prematurely to avoid a startled cough, taken off guard as she is by the image of Principal Weems with her head tilted, arms raised in the manner of a wartime wallet photograph to pluck the pins from her hair. Even without the resemblance, it’s far too intimate, so much so that her eyes slide back to the hearth with an echo of old guilt rattling beneath her ribs.

Lana listens, but she won’t look, feeling already like an intruder as she busies herself with smoke and wine, with the fall of ash into an open palm. Without the aid of her notes ( off record ), she knows well enough by now that the more fiddly details will be lost, but the bigger, more compelling pieces do stick in her mental sieve.

Abnormal. Strange. Fabrication. Chequered. Former student.

At Miss Weems’ prompting, Lana does, finally, lift her eyes again, blinking at the loose white curls framing Larissa’s face, trailing down past the horizon of her shoulders. “You said 'abnormal.' What did you mean by that, exactly?”
