PARROY: DISCOVER THE SECRET TO THE SUCCESS OF BRAZILIAN TATTOO ARTIST PARROY

You already know that we, at DESTRANGEIRO, love tattoos and enjoy getting to know the inspiring journeys of artists. But when we come across eye-catching, unique works on our Instagram feed, we can’t help but be amazed and curious to learn more.

Tattooing is not always a straightforward creative process. Most of the time, it’s a challenging journey to find the right style and ultimately achieve success. Parroy, a 37-year-old artist, is one of those restless (in a positive way!) tattoo artists who has discovered the recipe for success through his talent.

DESTRANGEIRO - How did your career begin? Was it a smooth start?

With fifteen years of experience, Parroy granted an exclusive interview to Tattoos for Life. Let’s dive into it.

DESTRANGEIRO - How did it all begin? What influenced you besides your love for drawing and art?

Parroy – “The early days of the profession were not easy. We know that being a tattoo artist is not always well-regarded by everyone. In some places, we are marginalized. Music, especially hardcore and metalcore, was undoubtedly an inspiration for me. Artists in those genres were always heavily tattooed and served as excellent artistic references for me at the beginning of my career.”

DESTRANGEIRO - Since access to the internet wasn’t common back then, how did you stay updated on what was happening in the tattoo world?

DESTRANGEIRO - Every artist has their main influences. Who were your mentors in the beginning?

Parroy – “I always sought quality information from the source. I looked for inspiration from the best tattoo artists in the city and also frequented the more traditional tattoo circuits, such as the Galeria do Rock, where I worked for years and professionalized myself until I eventually had my own studio.”

ALEX URAGAN: ART OF ANTIQUE TATTOOING

As it is known, tattoos have become a real trend today, and this trend is gaining momentum all over the world. Many people decide to take this step to express their individuality, capture important events in life, or simply decorate their bodies. But what happens inside this industry, how it develops through the eyes of a modern tattoo artist, what trends emerge, and how tattoo artists cope with competition? These and other questions will be answered by the famous ancient tattoo master – Alex Uragan.

He will tell to DESTRANGEIRO about his travels, the popularity of ancient tattoos in different countries, as well as the importance of education and passing on experience to newcomers in the industry. And, of course, we will find out how he sees the future of the world tattoo industry in the coming years.

DESTRANGEIRO - Is tattooing for you art, work, or something else?For me, tattooing is something in between the fashion and beauty industries.

Tattooing is definitely connected to the beauty industry through client service. Comfort in studios, customer orientation, and, of course, safety during procedures. So for me, tattooing is a good income, the emotions of clients, and self- expression in my work.

Also, classical motifs blend perfectly with other styles. For example, the currently popular micro-realism + geometry + abstraction. Well, everyone knows what I’m talking about.

DESTRANGEIRO - What unique features of your work can you identify on your own?

The main feature of my work, both technically and creatively, is the complex compositions built according to the anatomy of the body, consisting of multiple characters and elements that are united into a cohesive narrative.

Another feature is my personal style, which many people seek. It is not just a style, but my own perspective on how a tattoo interacts with a person’s body, appearance, and lifestyle.

I view tattoos as an enhancement to a person’s appearance, and I strive to ensure that my tattoos do not overpower the person’s overall look, but rather harmonize with it. They should blend with the person’s clothing, accessories, and overall lifestyle. That is why I chose the black and gray technique, as it creates semi-transparent tattoos with exposed areas of skin. After healing, they look incredibly cool, and even clients say it looks like they were born with those tattoos.

Everyone shares this view of tattoos. That is why 60% of my clients get their first tattoo from me, and often their first tattoo becomes a sleeve.

DESTRANGEIRO sat down for a fun chat with renowned Brazilian tattoo artist known as Parroy to show that tattoos are a serious matter, requiring experience, advanced techniques, and above all, clear and transparent communication with clients, whether they’re famous or not.

Born in the northern zone of São Paulo, Parroy has traveled to several countries around the world, showcasing his art. He carries with him not just needles, drawings, and inks, but also a personality that has evolved from traditional tattooing to more intricate works with fine and meticulous details, while still keeping his primary influence deeply rooted in traditional American tattoos.

With fifteen years of experience, Parroy shared some insights with us about the celebrities he has had the honor of tattooing, his international experiences, and the recognition he has received.

DESTRANGEIRO – People love to get a glimpse into the lives of celebrities! Have you tattooed many artists?

Parroy – “I have tattooed quite a few famous people. Sometimes it was through referrals, and other times, the celebrity would just show up at the studio unexpectedly. It’s also fun to be surprised like that.”

DESTRANGEIRO – Tell us: which artists and celebrities have you tattooed?

DESTRANGEIRO – Did you feel more pressure because they were celebrities and web influencers?

DESTRANGEIRO – What attracts celebrities to seek your artistic work?

Parroy – “It’s hard to say for sure, but I believe it’s due to the recognition my work has gained over the years. I have won some awards, such as ‘Best Traditional Tattoo,’ and have been featured in publications like Metal Head magazine. Naturally, our work gains traction. I’m happy about it, always staying grounded.”

African imigrants | downtown, São Paulo.

Hortense Mbuyi is lawyer from Congo: after the murder of the Angolan (mentioned in the article above). She abandoned her home at Itaquera and moved to "9th july squad” (@cozinhaocupacao9dejulho) in a hurry with all her family. Mother and social activist, she collaborates with food preparation in the occupation kitchen to help homeless on weekends. Check her social profile: https://bit.ly/3gOaKgw. According to the oficial Census of Population on the Street there are more than 24,000 people living on the streets of the city (attached photos I took of the social action).

The high unemployment rates and the low value of social assistance of only 600,00 reais per month (current conversion $111,00 dollars) during the pandemic period in São Paulo, a city considered the economic capital of Brazil, made the low-income population even more vulnerable. Following a global movement with the economic slowdown and the lack of perspective, many denunciations of xenophobia are happening in the suburbs. Even at the top of the vulnerability pyramid, the main point of my documentary project is to investigate stories of overcoming women who are articulating themselves through social movements and individual voluntary actions. In this complex context, there are several stories of psychological support, document regulation consulting and social assistance provided by immigrants and refugees to their own community and also vulnerable Brazilians.

Nesse complexo contexto, há muitas histórias de suporte psicológico, regulamentação de documentos, assistência social realizada por imigrantes e refugiados. Mesmo no topo da pirâmide da vulnerabilidade, mulheres refugiadas estão se organizando por meio de movimentos sociais e ações individuais para ajudar pessoas em situação de vulnerabilidade que vivem nas ruas. É o caso de Hortense Mbuyi. Advogada e congolesa, após o assassinato do Angolano (citado no artigo acima), abandonou sua casa no bairro de Itaquera e se mudaram para a Ocupação Nove de Julho (@cozinhaocupacao9dejulho) às pressas com a família. Mãe recente e ativista social, colabora com a preparação de alimentos na cozinha da ocupação para ajudar moradores. De acordo com o Censo da População em Situação de Rua, divulgado pela prefeitura, há mais de 24 mil pessoas vivendo nas ruas.

Jorge é imigrante peruano e ajudou no preparo de centenas de refeições que são servidas todo o domingo para pessoas em situação de rua do centro. Como ele estava de máscara, cometi a gafe de não reconhecê-lo. Já havia fotografado ele em dois momentos rs.

Ele mora na ocupação. É um artista de sopro e percussionista talentoso. Com pouco recurso e muito carinho, centenas de marmitas fizeram o domingo de muita gente. Total respeito à autogestão.

A palavra Cosplay surgiu da contração de duas palavras em inglês, costume e play . É um hobby que consiste em se fantasiar de personagens de filmes, games, seriados, quadrinhos ou desenhos animados. Mas, além de usarem as fantasias, os cosplayers também interpretam esses personagens através das posturas, das falas e das poses típicas. Essa prática se tornou muito popular e, a cada dia, agrega mais fãs, que demonstram seu amor pela cultura pop.

Eles se reúnem em eventos, como convenções de anime, mangás e games e participam de diversos concursos. Muitas pessoas acreditam que essa prática surgiu no Japão, pois os japoneses adoram o Cosplay. Mas, sua origem vem das convenções de ficção científica nos Estados Unidos na década de 1930, quando dois jovens apareceram fantasiados com trajes espaciais na 1° Worldcon, em Nova York.

Eles fizeram tanto sucesso que, nos anos seguintes, dezenas de pessoas compareceram às convenções com fantasias de ficção científica e foi criado um concurso para elas.

No ano de 1984, Nobuyuki Takahashi, de um estúdio japonês chamado Studio Hard , visitou a Worldcon daquele ano e ficou impressionado com as fantasias e com as apresentações criativas dos participantes. Ele difundiu essa prática no Japão através das revistas de ficção científica e criou o nome Cosplay para designá-la.
