You never meant for it to slip out. You’ve been so good, months of quiet hand-holding under tables, kisses stolen in dark corners of venues, your name buried deep in her phone under an inside joke so no one would suspect a thing.
You’d both agreed: it’s better this way. Less noise. More you and her, and no one else’s eyes on the soft, quiet thing you share.
but then tonight happened.
It’s just a little album wrap party, friends, a couple people from her label, some familiar faces. You’re not even supposed to be there officially; you’re just there because she wants you pressed against her side in the back corner, her hand slipping under the hem of your sweater every so often to trace soft lines of your hip.
She’s talking to some guy you vaguely recognize from her team, he’s sweet, a little drunk, leaning too close to her ear when the music gets louder. You know he means nothing by it, and you’re just tipsy enough that you know you should let it go, but you don’t.
So when Gracie laughs at something he says and your hand grasping her sleeve to pull her back into you, you don’t even think twice before you lean in and murmur against her ear, loud enough for him to hear:
“C’mon, baby, dance with me instead.”
It’s like the music cuts out, just for a second. He blinks. Gracie blinks. You freeze, mouth still half open, realizing what you’ve done.
Gracie’s eyes flick to yours, wide and startled but soft, the way they always are when it’s just you and her. But now it’s not just you and her, the people around you are noticing. You hear someone whisper your name, someone else glance over.
“Shit,” you breathe, your face burning hot. You pull back a little, suddenly hyperaware of your hand still on her waist. “Gracie, I-”
Before you can finish, she turns in your arms, slides her hands up your jaw, and kisses you. Right there, in the middle of the party, with her friends and her team and half the damn room watching.
You make a soft, surprised sound against her mouth but she doesn’t pull away, she kisses you like she’s daring anyone to say a word, like she’s been waiting to do this forever.
When she finally breaks the kiss, she leans in, her forehead resting against yours, her lips brushing your cheek.
“Guess that’s out now,” she whispers, giggling.
You groan, hiding your face in her shoulder as the room erupts in little gasps and laughs and not so subtle cheers. “I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to-”
“Hey.” She cups your cheek, tilts your face back to hers. She’s beaming, all soft dimples and flushed cheeks and sparkling eyes. “Don’t be sorry. I don’t wanna hide you anymore anyway.”
You grin at her, dizzy and tipsy and completely in love, your heart pounding so loud you can barely hear the music anymore.
“Good,” you whisper back, kissing her again, softer this time. “Then dance with me, baby.”
And she does, hands tangled with yours, spinning you around her little corner of the party like you’re the only two people who matter.
