Databending is the process of manipulating a media file of a certain format, using software designed to edit files of another format. Distortions in the medium typically occur as a result, and the process is frequently employed in glitch art.
The glitch art movement encourages exploration mechanisms by which licenced software users are limited and for consciously going beyond the schemes and frames imposed by the developers. True software freedom can be achieved in open source programs, and glitch art is a manifestation of this fact.
