permanent starter call

“detective ellen yin, gotham p.d. step aside, please.”
[it had been a close call-- but she’s recuperating in the hospital, though put out of action for a week at least.]
Icebreakers I
"Excuse me, but you’ve got a little something on your face there."
"Well... this is awkward."
"I guess this is the part where we shake hands and say 'nice to meet you', right?"
"I've seen you here before, but I guess I just never had the courage to say hello before."
"I'm so excited to finally meet you in person! I've always dreamed of this."
"Sorry, but, um... am I the only one confused here? Why hasn't anyone else showed up?"
"Watch out!"
"Am I dead? Are you an angel?"
"Okay, okay, listen. I miiiiight have had a little too much, and I miiight need someone to help me get home. You look trustworthy, so let's go."
"I'm sorry--please, can you help me?"
"I look forward to working with you."
"I look forward to serving you."
"Stay still! I'm trying to stop the bleeding!"
"I'm not trying to be nosy or anything, but... I've been seeing you here a lot lately, always by yourself. I just wanted to say, if you have anything on your mind, I'd listen."
"Um, I know you don't know me, but I think what you did back there was very brave."
"Some weather we're having, huh?"
( well, now she knows she’s dropped the hammer on the nail this time. she don’t look too pleased—- she’s not the first. )
❝ heh, you’d be correct. unless yer a priest; then technically speakin’, it’d be bastard child. ya don’t gotta worry ‘bout me, like i jus’ promised ya ‘fore. ❞
"you seem like a perfectly nice young lady. i'd hate to see you go the way of your father." which was to say, head-to-head with the bat in a frequently losing manner.
her tone has regressed; teasing warmth has surrendered to cool professionalism.
{mobster-princess}:
( && this is the moment of truth where she can back out now or blow it for the hell of it. )
❝ ya could group me with the long long list of people he’s pissed off, though i ain’t a victim—- thankfully. it’d sure be a day to remember he tries with me. i mean…
… black mask wouldn’t appreciate hearin’ of someone tryin’ to hurt his only daughter. ❞
(was she surprised? yes, because she wasn't aware that black mask, of all people, had a daughter, but criminals could have family too, she supposed.)
"i don't care what criminals think. you go by miss sionis, i presume? -- and as long as you aren't causing any problems, your father won't have to worry."

"You don’t have the guts, detective,” he bluffed, knowing full well she did. But riling her up could only work in his favour, trying to break that cold hard concentration. “Shooting me would be an awful lot of paperwork.”
The prototype was still in his hand, thankfully undamaged. Without looking over his shoulder, he tried to judge the distance between him and the edge of the roof. If he could get himself over, Yin wouldn’t have a clean shot, and he’d be able to hopefully get in the air now that the shock of the bullet in his foot was wearing off.
Or, you know. Fall ten stories and break every bone in his body. But he liked to live a little on the edge.
"Trust me, if I don’t get this pretty little piece back to my employer, I’ve got something way worse than a bullet waiting for me.” That’s right, tease her with the chance to figure out who the mastermind behind the project was.
"i don't concern myself with the fate of criminals once i've gotten them safe behind bars, firefly. pleading your case isn't going to work on me." that... that, admittedly, was a little bit of a lie. she worried about certain criminals, but they were mostly the poor teenagers and even pre-teens who the police picked up doing such mundane crimes as pickpocketing and mugging.
why did they have to do it--? actually, she knew. she and every sane person in this godforsaken city. but gotham wasn't known for sanity, and yin had long given up on being a voice of reason. she appeased herself with doing what she could, and if that meant bringing in impoverished juveniles and self-serving supervillains, she'd do it.
it took her approximately five large steps to bring herself within a yard of the downed villain. "it might work on the officers at the station, if you tell them who your employer is and be on your best behavior."
she kept one hand on the gun, other slipping a pair of handcuffs from inside her pocket.
(mobster-princess:)
❝yeah but —— a l’il harmless advice never killed nobody. technically. i’ll give it t’ya though fer bein’ ahead of the game —- my old man taught me a few things or too.
…. wait a minute. d’ya even know who yer talkin’ to right now?❞
"...no. not really. i don't associate directly with normal civilians-- it's usually criminals or victims. although, since you've had the pleasure of interacting with firefly, i could group you in the victims."
"who are you?"
“I told you, kid— we’re in this together.”

❝juuuust trust me. i know what ’m doin’ here. an’ if it makes ‘im feel any better, i’ll leave a kiss on the note, he’ll know i send my ah… regards and adoration for him.❞
"it is a good idea to not quite trust anyone until they are completely assured to be fully loyal. ...i expect you already know that."
(mobster-princess:)
❝hmm… well alrighty then. guess i’ll take to rememberin’ that. ‘s only fair after all. an’… so long as i behave, we can jus’… say that i found ‘im like this? in return i’d pay fer the medical expenses!❞
"we aren't going to say anything. i'm not the type of person who gives advice like this. it's your decision-- as well as the issue of medical bills, although i have no doubts firefly is more than well enough prepared."
(mobster-princess)
❝ so hypothetically speakin’… if i beat the shit out of garfield lynns fer callin’ me a princess one too many times—- honestly it’s a totally acceptable concept then?❞
"only as long as you call up gcpd after so they can come and take him into protective custody."

X. | — ❝ Listen, I uh—- I know yer a cop an’ all but haven’t ya ever jus’ wanted to jus’ go beat someone’s stupid face in with a bat or somethin’? Only ‘cause they need to shut up? That’s my mood right now. Tell me I ain’t the only one. C’mon. Please?❞
"of course i have.most... cops, come from troubled backrounds. that doesn't lend itself to being a polite and well-adjusted individual. granted, it's mostly my co-workers, so i can't do it..."
"Ooh, temper," Firefly said through gritted teeth. The bullet in his foot hurt like a bitch, but his suit had helped the impact somewhat. With any luck and a quick trip to his favoured back alley "chop shop", he’d be right as rain in no time. "You should really watch that blood pressure of yours, detective. Wouldn’t want you blowing your top. Or saying something you might regret."
His wrist shot up with practised speed and with precision aim he fired his left gauntlet at Yin, just singing her hair.
"Concentrated plasma bursts can do a lot worse than a bullet, any day."
"not if i shoot you first." her voice was even, matter-or-fact, austere and cold as the steel weapon in her hand. it fit there, like her palm had been molded around the grip. for all the low-down villains in the city, it may as well have been. "firefly, this is silly and unnecessary. i'm only going to ask you one more time before i shoot you somewhere worse than your foot: stand down."
her voice left no room for argument; but knowing firefly, he'd carve out a little wiggle room.
"Bulletproof glass and body armour, detective! You think I didn’t learn from all the Batarangs?" Not that it mattered a lot in the long run, the Bat always found some way to circumvent whatever fixes he put in place, but—
Oh, there was the gun, not just drawn but aimed pretty expertly in his direction. Which was his cue to leave, really, even if he’d been hoping to stick around and get a chance to lead Batman on a wild goose chase, so he was going to just—
Apparently not go anywhere, because getting shot in the foot was a real dampener on trying to concentrate flying a very intricate and complicated flight suit. It did made it a lot easier to crash painfully into an adjoining rooftop, though.
if yin were in a fancy action movie, she would have tipped the gun up; blown a sickly trail of smoke away from the muzzle, perhaps. but she wasn't, and so she didn't, instead favoring the route of climbing up a ladder with her gun still drawn. the trip took a mere ten seconds, but with her heart pounding and hand stinging from the recoil, it seemed to take hours. she finally reached the top and scanned the rooftop for the criminal, holding her gun up warily.
"give up, firefly. a batarang doesn't have the range and force of a gun, and i assure you--" she paused to flip her hair out of her face. "i can and will hurt you if you don't stand down." saying that she would prefer not to was a boldfaced lie. she wouldn't kill him, of course-- she would never stoop that low. but she wouldn't mind putting his garish yellow-and-black self in the hospital for a while.
