“you obviously want something if you’re here, elektra.” maybe that would make this easier. maybe things would be easier if he stayed cold and kept himself at a distance, things could be better with them. things could be easier. he’d keep living his life and she’d keep living hers and it would be like this intersection of their paths never happened—but even matt knew that was nothing more than wishful thinking. he knew he would be thinking about her for days to come, that he would be running through all the different scenarios in his hand and pouring all of his concentration in trying to remember what her hair smelled like. after all these years, matt was still head over heels in love with a woman he should have been staying far, far away from. he hated himself for it.
but he didn’t, not really, because no matter how much heartache it had caused in the end, matt wouldn’t trade that time spent with elektra for anything. hell, he’d give just about anything to get some of it back. he would give anything for them to be able to bring back the days when things were simpler, when they weren’t tangled up in notions like love and romance and instead they were just having fun and enjoying each other as the only people who understood.
he stiffened slightly as he heard her coat sliding against her arms with a smooth shuffling sound. it made his heart ache. he wanted to touch her arms. he wanted to bite her neck. “are you giving me another option?” he asked.
❝ I TOLD YOU, MATTHEW. i thought i'd drop by, for old time's sake. ❞ her shoulders rose in an almost languorous shrug, coat and scarf both folded and draped across his kitchen counter. ❝ and i tend to do illegal things when i get bored. ❞ it was only half a lie. elektra tended to do illegal things all the time, but she knew that she wasn't the only one. she remembered the two of them flirting right on the edge of recklessness, dancing over that line without a care, young and wild and hot - blooded. she remembered how light she had felt then, as if finally she'd found someone who understood her. and she remembered how crushing it felt to become a woman she thought matthew could no longer understand. ❝ breaking into your apartment seemed like A VICTIMLESS CRIME. ❞
SHE TURNED, LITHE AS A JUNGLE CAT, to lean the small of her back against the kitchen counter. ❝ of course. you can offer me dinner and a drink, if you like that better. ❞ there was a shade of a smile on her lips, not quite wide enough to press dimples into her cheeks, but there nevertheless. ❝ or you can TELL ME TO GET OUT. ❞
* 001. INDENTIFIED: / WAYNE, DAMIAN.
BLOODSHED WASN’T SOMETHING that bothered the boy. He was an al Ghul after all. The life of an assassin was part of his history. Although in those ten years he took part in spending a lot of pain by killing anyone that got in his way. He didn’t think anything of what he was doing back then, and sometimes he can still hear their screams at night. Damian was a hero now, but all the good he has been doing can’t ever make up for the blood he spilled.
His katana is in his hand, but he slips it back into it’s sheath. “What’s the story behind that?” He asks, eyes looking up at the woman. “I died at the hands of a blade once too, still have the scars from it.” He casually mentions, not ever keeping his death a secret. He steps closer eyes looking at the weapon.
❝ IT'S A LONG STORY. and the only part that matters is how it ends. ❞ it ended with her, stabbed cleanly through the torso, bleeding to death in the streets of hell's kitchen. there was one thing they didn't tell you about dying: there was no peaceful white light. no choir of angels, no awaiting paradise. IT ONLY HURT.
HER EYES FELL TO THE WEAPON EVEN AS THE BOY'S DID. she spun it expertly between her fingers, and then sheathed it on her thigh once again. ❝ a synaptic snare with a biometric lock, keyed to my nervous system, and mine alone. if anyone else tries to touch the hilt of it, it will deliver a shock that will paralyze them. ❞ it didn't matter, she told herself. soon she would be putting it away, trying once again to live a life that didn't involve killing. ❝ i won't let anyone kill me again. i'm sure you UNDERSTAND THE FEELING. ❞
* 001. IDENTIFIED: / ROMANOVA, NATALIA.
Coolly, Natasha turned to Elektra, her loose demeanor the opposite of on edge. Despite her appearance, she is, as always, ready for a potential fight. It certainly wouldn’t be a surprise with Elektra, but she couldn’t think of something either of them had done recently to warrant one, unless her regular- casually, on friendly terms- meetings with Matt counted. She offers the woman an equally icy and false smile. “When am I ever not overjoyed to see you, Ms. Natchios?”
❝ THE LAST TIME. and the time before that. ❞ as a matter of fact, elektra couldn't think of any reason that the two of them would fight now. only that they had a history of it, and where the black widow was concerned, it was always hard to tell. the corners of red lips plucked upward, a long dark ponytail swinging behind her head as her face turned toward natasha. ❝ but i'm sure I DON'T HAVE TO REMIND YOU. ❞
“Oh, I’m sorry…did that hurt your feelings?”
the story of elektra is a tragedy. so shall this child’s story be. (elektra natchios vs electra by sophocles)
ur full of yourself tbh
you would be too if you were beautiful and interesting

The glowing appreciation on her face shone brighter than the noonday sun. “I’m no superman, but sometimes I wish I was. Instead of saving the world, I just get to write about other people doing it.” Sometimes Karen wished she could do more to help the current global situation, but she knew it was near impossible. Even the heroes were having a difficult time these days with politics getting in the way of what they do best. The politics had turned heroes into vigilantes. “How long have you been in Star City?” she asked. The woman in front of her had an air of sophistication and allure about her that made Karen want to know more. “And how are you liking it so far?”
❝ BETWEEN YOU AND ME, superman is boring. and half of his work is done for him, by the journalists that write about him. not nearly as impressive as he seems at first glance. ❞ elektra couldn't completely vouch for karen page's writing talent, but the blonde would've made a terribly good spy. something about the woman made her horribly easy to talk to. even for elektra, who hardly talked to anyone. she turned, easing past the painting of the erinyes with a thoughtful hum. ❝ not long. and it's a city, just like any other... you? WHAT BRINGS YOU SO FAR FROM HOME? ❞

matt felt something twist deep in his stomach, though he wasn’t sure what that feeling was. it was something close to guilt—he had given up on them, hadn’t he? but guilt wasn’t the right term for what he was feeling, not when she had hurt him just as much as he had hurt her. every time they got together it ended in nothing but trouble for both of them, but matt couldn’t help himself. he kept going back for more, going back for second and third helpings of the pain as if he hadn’t had enough pain in his life already, as if she hadn’t hurt him enough already. it was like matt had selective amnesia—and the selection had entirely to do with her.
he tugged at his cane to unlink the sections, folding it over in his hands and wrapping the strap at the grip around it, holding it together as he put it down. it might have looked like he was relaxing as he shrugged off his jacket and draped it over a chair, doing the same with his tie, but the truth was that he was preparing himself for if he had to fight. he unbuttoned his cuffs, deftly rolling up his sleeves as he took a few cautious steps towards her. “and why should i believe you?” he asked quietly, his voice deathly calm. “you’ve lied to me before.”
❝ YOU DON'T HAVE TO BELIEVE ME. i wasn't asking for your approval. ❞ she couldn't say why she'd told him to begin with, as a matter of fact. maybe only because it felt like she needed to tell someone, to make it true. and where was logan when you needed him? she'd had a vision of her mother, once. and the vision had been starkly clear about where her life was headed. ( all that blood. one day you'll drown in it. ) she hadn't given it much thought, then... but some days it did feel like drowning. death followed her like a shadow, and she didn't know if she could ever truly shake it off. she had tried, so many times. BUT SHE COULD TRY AGAIN.
HER FINGERS PAUSED IN THEIR DRUMMING, and then her hand tapped once against her thigh. a dull thump of her palm on denim. no suit, no sai sheathed right above her knee. ELEKTRA, ASSASSIN was folded up and stashed in a safe in the back of a closet somewhere. a neat eyebrow arched. ❝ if i'd come here to kill someone, i would've done it without waving it in your face. and if i'd come here to hurt you, it'd already be done. I'M FINISHED. ❞
MAYBE SHE COULD'VE MENTIONED WORKING WITH S.H.I.E.L.D. run down the list of every legal, good thing she'd done recently. told him to listen to her heart and see if he heard any falter in it. instead, she whisked her scarf off and let her coat slip off of her arms. ❝ please tell me you're rolling up your sleeves because you're about to OFFER TO POUR ME A DRINK. ❞

“Oaths are a very sacred thing. I can understand why they would be pissed. There’s nothing worse than a broken promise and a mountain of lies behind it,” she turned her gaze away from the painting and toward the woman. “I’ve written a few articles here and there. I guess I must’ve pissed someone off because they have me stationed here to write about this gallery’s opening night,” she gestured around the room at the beautiful artwork. “Not my usual beat, I’d say. What brings you out here tonight? Interested in investing in the arts?”
❝ A FLUFF PIECE HERE AND THERE NEVER HURT. even superman takes a break from saving the world to save a kitten from a tree, now and then. ❞ one of her eyebrows arched slightly, and then her expression smoothed as she looked around the room. often, elektra had dreamed that she had become an artist rather than an assassin. that her father was still alive, and her life had not crumbled. sometimes it stung, to wake up from those dreams. to remember that the RED ON HER HANDS WAS BLOOD, not paint. that she was a woman of destruction, not a woman of creation. ❝ something like that. mostly i'm just trying to find my bearings in a new city. PEOPLE WATCH. ❞

matt’s apartment had just been pulled back together after his place had been ransacked, and after getting everything back to the way he liked it, he was way more comfortable in there, thanks to the familiarity of it all. he pressed his lips together as he walked up the steps towards his door, hearing the sound of the neon flickering outside as he fumbled with his keys before letting himself inside—and immediately feeling that something was off. he heard the heartbeat resonating through the room, and while he originally assumed he was hearing his neighbor’s heart when he was out in the hallway, once he got inside, he could tell that the pulse he was hearing was entirely different from what he was used to—despite it also feeling like he was finally coming home the moment he heard it.
it was her, it was always her, and matthew froze for a moment as he heard her voice. he stiffened, hands tightening into fists around the grip of his cane as he stood by the door, jacket still on his shoulders, tie still tightened to a noose around his neck. his shoulders were tensed, every hair on his body standing up as he tried not to give in to everything that he remembered and loved about the encounters they had in the past. if he didn’t keep reminding himself about how wrong it all went, he would get weak. he would let her back in—and he couldn’t afford to do that. he clicked his tongue against the roof of his mouth. “what are you doing here, elektra?”
AMAZING HOW NO MATTER HOW MUCH TIME HAD PASSED since she saw him last, elektra still knew matthew as well as she knew herself. but perhaps that was the way it should be. she had crawled across a city just to die in his arms. he was MORE OF A HOME to her than any building could hope to be. or he had been, once. none of those thoughts were betrayed by her expression, nor by her heartbeat or the steady in - and - out of her breath. ❝ in your apartment? i thought i'd drop by, FOR OLD TIME'S SAKE. ❞
AS THOUGH HE WASN'T WHITE - KNUCKLING HIS CANE, she stepped lightly into the kitchen, fingernails drumming against the countertop as she passed. ❝ in star city? that's a longer story... ❞ one that she wouldn't have told to anyone else. but it wasn't anyone she was talking to: it was matt. there was a time when she could have, and would have, told him anything. everything. that time was long gone, but THE REFLEX WAS STILL THERE. her chest rose with a long inhale, fingertips dragging gently over the counter's surface. ❝ i've been trying to get away from my past. being an assassin... i've tried before, but always in new york. this city seemed like a good place to get lost. ❞ if she'd known that he was there, SHE MIGHT'VE PICKED SOMEWHERE ELSE.

Karen tilted her head slightly as she examined the painting. There was something primal about it that she took a liking to. “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned,” she noted. “He probably didn’t make it out of there alive based on their expressions. I wonder what the story behind the painting is. What did the man do to unleash the wrath of the erinyes?” she wondered out loud.
❝ PROBABLY BROKE AN OATH. the furies are like that. ❞ elektra wouldn't admit that at one time she'd considered herself like them. DEADLY WOMAN, carving out justice with sai in place of knives. but she'd been younger then. her eyes turned to the blonde beside her, curious. speaking of the story behind the painting... ❝ you write stories, don't you, ms. page? hunting for TRUTH AND JUSTICE? ❞
❝ I AM NOT A MURDERER. i don’t take joy in killing. ❞

THIS PLACE WASN'T FAMILIAR TO HER. this wasn't matthew's apartment in hell's kitchen... it wasn't his college dorm room. but it was his, and he had left his mark here. the smell of him ——— still comforting, somehow ——— lingered even though he wasn't here. his coats hung on hooks. had she really missed him so much that simply being in a room where he had been was soothing... ? her fingers dragged along the back of his couch, and she moved QUIETLY AS A WRAITH in the silent space. the heels of her boots on the wood of the floor, a whisper - quiet movement of hair as dark curls that tumbled to her waist shifted across her back. YES, SHE HAD MISSED HIM.
THE SOUND OF THE DOOR UNLOCKING CAUSED HER TO PAUSE. her hand slipped back into her coat pocket, the soft folds of her scarf covering the slender column of her neck as her head turned. she was quiet as a shadow, but she knew it made no difference. she could be QUIET AS THE GRAVE, and matthew would still know she was there. she stood with feet firm on the floor, statue - still but for her head tilting and a smirk blooming on her lips. ❝ ——— there you are, matthew. TOOK YOU LONG ENOUGH. ❞

A LIFE WALLOWING IN BLOOD. she wears death like a second skin, always veiled in it. and almost always she is the one dealing it. ( the deadliest assassin in the world, they call her. DEATH ITSELF. ) but she has found herself on the other end of a weapon, as well. her own sai, driven between her ribs, through her heart. there is still a scar there, just below her chest. a lesson. a reminder. DEATH WAS A MISTAKE SHE WOULD NEVER MAKE AGAIN.
❝ I HAVE DIED ON THE END OF THIS BLADE. ❞ she turns the sai, letting the metal catch the light and gleam. her gaze turns toward the boy, dark and distant. ❝ every time i kill someone with it, I KNOW EXACTLY HOW IT FEELS. ❞
