Devin took a deep breath as he took a step forward in his full armor, waiting to see if the good lady Maelora would take him to be her personal guard.

Maelora paced the hall a bit before clearing her throat. “I thank you all for your service today. I have picked Ser Devin to be my personal guard,” she announced as she nodded in his direction.

“ It is my honor to serve you Princess” Devin said as he knelt down, crossing his hand over his heart

She gave a nod of her head. “Arise Ser Devin, come, let’s get you familiarized with my quarters, those are usually the areas primed for attack,” she said.

Ser Devin nodded and stood up, walking quickly to the princess’ side “ Of course princess, your proactive approach is much appreciated”

“I try to be, even if other’s don’t always agree. Something I’m too headstrong,” she chuckled as she guided him. “Go on, look and get acquainted, ask my anything.”

“ it is far better to be headstrong than feebleminded” noted Devin who continued to follow her closely “ I do remain curious at the extent of your personal combat training, as well as if you tend to have secrets one may only share with a knight who serves them”

“You’re correct in that matter,” she replied and turned to give him a curious look before she sat down on her lounge. “Usually it’s not standard for a princess to receive it, I basically annoyed my father until he said yes and my twin supported me in the endeavor, reminding him that we have warrior queens in our bloodline.”

“ I believe it fitting for anyone in the Royal line to at the very least have the most basic of trainings in combat, though even more extensive work is good to hear of as well. It makes my job a bit simpler to be at complete honestly” Devin noted

“I would agree and I learned all the others aspects to, like needle point and harp playing and dancing, so I figured I could learn other stuff as well. I even taught Rhaegar the harp,” she smiled. “We should know how to defend ourselves.”

“ Hopefully that won’t be needed, as capable as you most certainly are” Devin noted and stood at her side “ I’m sorry did you say you taught your brother the harp?”

“I trust my knights to keep me protected, but one never knows. Traitors lurk around all corners,” she said then gave Devin a soft smile. “I did indeed, he’s actually better than me,” she chuckled.

“ I can Assure you of the many things I am a traitor I am not” Devin said softly, but sternly. “ that is quite impressive, I grow jealous of those with musical abilities”

“I’m certainly not implying that you are, one of the reasons I’ve picked you. Some of the others I don’t trust at all,” she replied. “I’ll give him some extra wine at dinner and have him play for you one evening,” she teased.

“ I would be so honored if you did, though I sure at some point I will see it at this newly appointed position” chuckled Devin

“You will, I’m sure you’ll see some very interesting things. The best advice I can give is to wisely keep quiet about things,” Maelora smiled.

“ Believe me princess, i am well versed in being quite when necessary. Knights aren’t known to be very talkative, those who are… I mustn’t say”

Maelora chuckled softly. “See? Already very clever. I knew I made a good choice with you. You fought to protect instead of a thirst for blood or to prove how strong you are,” she noted.

“ I simply joined the kings guard to protect and serve the land of my family and people. The games of power do not excited me I must admit” Devin said softly

“You’re one of the very few, smarter than most. Power is dangerous….and can be taken away easily,” Maelora said.

“ I find that those who seek power often have it stripped of them, while those who avoid it are gifted it. Though that’s only what I observe”

“You’re very observant and correct,” she said. “Probably another reason I was drawn to you.”

“ perhaps it was” Devin grinned “ perhaps it is a touch vain but I’d like to think my wisdom is also as important as my combat abilities”

“I would agree with you,” she grinned. “It’s not vain at all. One should be confident in their abilities.”

“ Im glad we are in agreement, I believe you made a wise choice in myself if for nothing but our ability to get along”

“That’s also true. You, Ser Devin, have a gift of being right a lot of the time,” Mae chuckled.

“ Perhaps I do, but I don’t think it happens nearly as often as you may presume, though I appreciate the confidence” grinned Devin

“We shall see,” Mae grinned. “We’ll be spending a lot of time together, I was heading to the training yard, to practice my archery.”

“ Of course princess, I am well aware of the way but please do lead us at your own pace” ser Devin said with a smile

“Of course,” Maelora smiled as they headed down to the training yard and she found her quiver and bow as the target was set up for her.

Ser Devin stood close to her, but was sure to leave a comfortable space between them as he watched her training

She practiced hitting the targets, having pretty good aim. She wasn’t as skilled as knight, but she could hold her own.

“ Your skills rival my own, archery happens too be one of my weaker skills” ser Devin noted with a small smile

“Thank you, and it takes a lot of practice,” she chuckled. “Although you’re a magnificent swordsman,” she praised.

“ I do pride myself on that yes” chuckled Devin, going forward to remove the arrows from the target for her

“Thank you, Ser Devin,” she smiled as she put them back into her quiver.

“ Princess” he nodded and stood back again, just admiring her personal ability to wield the bow and arrow silently

“There is a tourney coming up for my youngest sister’s nameday, are you planning to participate?” She asked him curiously.

“ i suppose if it is expected of me to participate in the tournament I will do so” answered ser Devin with a small smile

“It’s your choice, you can opt out considering you’re my personal guard now. However it would be a shame to not see you fight,” Mae grinned.

“ well I would not be well advised if told to let it be a shame to you, so I shall compete”

“Wonderful,” Mae beamed. “I can’t wait to watch and give you my favor to win of course.”

“ I would be so grateful” ser Devin bowed his head down with a small smile

“Lovely,” she said and the two finished up in the training yard before walking through the gardens.

“ it’s quite a lovely day” noted Ser Devin, looking at his boots a moment as they walked through

“It is indeed, we’ve been blessed with a long summer, although I heard winter is coming, but eventually the Starks would be right about that,” she chuckled.

Devin raised a brow and chuckled softly “ Forgive me but I haven’t the slightest clue what you speak about, perhaps it is something far above me” he teased

Mae gave him a smile and shook his head. “That’s alright, I’ll explain. See most of the noble houses have a Sigil and a saying, a motto if you will. House of Stark has a dire wolf and their house saying is that “winter is coming.” Of course, there have been times we’ve had long springs or summers, but eventually they end up being right,” she explained to him.

“ Perhaps then is it a statement about the inevitable?” Devin suggested with a small smile “ you never know”

“Most likely, yes,” Mae smiled. “The Starks are among the first of men, perhaps they know things we do not.”

“ Speaking in riddles is quite interesting” Devin noted “ Perhaps they do, there are similar legends amongst your own house”

“That’s very true, the song of ice and fire and the ones who are dreamers oft spoke in riddles,” Mae smiled. “Everything has to be so mysterious,” she teased.

“ I prefer to be straightforward, mystery leads to miscommunication and assumptions, those which lead to unnecessary conflict”

Maelor a let out a soft laugh and nodded her head. “You’re entirely correct and I can appreciate that. In politics and ruling the realm far too much could simply be avoided if one were direct.”

“Alas formalities are truly the main perpetrators of miscommunication” murmured Devin with a small sigh “ But that is simply not my issue to speak upon”

“They don’t even like it when those in positions of power speak on it,” she grinned. “They prefer to keep things as they were.” She shook her head a bit. “It’s a lot sometimes,” she admitted.

“ Knowing what I have heard of you in passing that does not surprising” murmured Devin. “ Perhaps you’ll make great changes”

“I suppose, my brother will wear the crown, but he’s smart and does listen to my opinions and always wishes for changes so,” Maelora smiled with a soft shrug.

“ You maintain far more power then you think you do” whispered Devin with a small smile “ even beyond what you may think”

Maelora gave him a sly smile. “Do I now? Perhaps you’re right. It’s a shame succession goes to the first born male, otherwise that would be wearing the crown when the time came.”

“ Are you the older twin?” Devin asked curiously, keeping a calm face with a small shrug “ and I would assume you do, most don’t know the extent of power you would technically have”

“I am, I came out first, alas Rhaegar is still the eldest male child,” Maelora smiled. “Still…seems the realm still wants a King to sit the throne and not a queen.”

“ Perhaps it is a personal skill but I tend to be able to identify an older sibling” chuckled the knight “ alas, there is little to be done with the opinions of the public”

“You’re right about that and one war nearly tore our family apart and ended our bloodline so it’s best to just keep the peace. I know Rhaegar will seek my opinion and respect it when needed,” she said.

“ I can see a calm and peaceful reign in your generation of ruling” Devin said calmly “ the only thing one can truly ask for is peace”

“Exactly, hmmm he would be my great great grand sire, but Viserys the first was known as Viserys the peaceful, which I think is a remarkable title as opposed to Maegor the cruel,” she teased.

“ I foresee your brother having a similar title” Devin grinned and gave a small shrug “ though I am no seer”

“He most likely will, Rhaegar has never been a cruel person,” Mae smiled.

“ I would be so honored as to fight by his side one day” grinned Devin “ Though I am quite content doing this as well”

“Oh he always needs good warriors by his side, so I shall put in a good word for you,” Mae teased.

Devin felt his cheeks darken and shrugged his metal clad shoulders “ much appreciated, my lady, thank you”

“It is my pleasure,” she grinned as they made their way to the council chamber.

“ What is on the agenda for the remainder of that day?” Devin asked softly as he followed

“Listening to a boring meeting then listening to more boring people as my father sits the throne to hear grievances today,” she said.

“Unfortunate, though I believe you will manage the most insightful of input regardless” noted the knight with a reassuring grin

Maelora chuckled softly. “I certainly try, most of it is so petty though,” she sighed. “As if they couldn’t work it out themselves.”

“ A gentle push in the right direction is all some need on most occasions” Devin grinned

“Mayhaps or some just wish to win the favor of the King and brag over it,” she laughed.

“ Perhaps i am an optimist, but I would strive to think that people are simply seeking guidance and closure”

“At times, yes, they are, well you’ll get to hear since you’ll be my side as my sworn shield,” she grinned.

“ Of course, and should i be incorrect about my assessment i shall revise my prior statement” noted the knight with a small smile

“A wise man,” Maelora grinned. “Some men hold too tight to convictions, it can be a downfall.”

“ It has occurred quite often, and I hold no shame in admitting small inaccuracies”

“It seems you have a good head on your shoulder,” Mae grinned.

“Tis one of the few requirements for the knighthood” Devin teased a bit and puffed his cheeks out

“Indeed, but a gift not many possess,” she teased, enjoying the company of him quite a bit.

Maelora paced the hall a bit before clearing her throat. “I thank you all for your service today. I have picked Ser Devin to be my personal guard,” she announced as she nodded in his direction.

“ It is my honor to serve you Princess” Devin said as he knelt down, crossing his hand over his heart

She gave a nod of her head. “Arise Ser Devin, come, let’s get you familiarized with my quarters, those are usually the areas primed for attack,” she said.

Ser Devin nodded and stood up, walking quickly to the princess’ side “ Of course princess, your proactive approach is much appreciated”

“I try to be, even if other’s don’t always agree. Something I’m too headstrong,” she chuckled as she guided him. “Go on, look and get acquainted, ask my anything.”

“ Hopefully that won’t be needed, as capable as you most certainly are” Devin noted and stood at her side “ I’m sorry did you say you taught your brother the harp?”

“ I can Assure you of the many things I am a traitor I am not” Devin said softly, but sternly. “ that is quite impressive, I grow jealous of those with musical abilities”

“ I would be so honored if you did, though I sure at some point I will see it at this newly appointed position” chuckled Devin

“You will, I’m sure you’ll see some very interesting things. The best advice I can give is to wisely keep quiet about things,” Maelora smiled.

“ Believe me princess, i am well versed in being quite when necessary. Knights aren’t known to be very talkative, those who are… I mustn’t say”

Maelora chuckled softly. “See? Already very clever. I knew I made a good choice with you. You fought to protect instead of a thirst for blood or to prove how strong you are,” she noted.

“ I simply joined the kings guard to protect and serve the land of my family and people. The games of power do not excited me I must admit” Devin said softly

“You’re one of the very few, smarter than most. Power is dangerous….and can be taken away easily,” Maelora said.

“ I find that those who seek power often have it stripped of them, while those who avoid it are gifted it. Though that’s only what I observe”

“You’re very observant and correct,” she said. “Probably another reason I was drawn to you.”

“ perhaps it was” Devin grinned “ perhaps it is a touch vain but I’d like to think my wisdom is also as important as my combat abilities”

“I would agree with you,” she grinned. “It’s not vain at all. One should be confident in their abilities.”

“ Im glad we are in agreement, I believe you made a wise choice in myself if for nothing but our ability to get along”

“That’s also true. You, Ser Devin, have a gift of being right a lot of the time,” Mae chuckled.

“ Perhaps I do, but I don’t think it happens nearly as often as you may presume, though I appreciate the confidence” grinned Devin

“We shall see,” Mae grinned. “We’ll be spending a lot of time together, I was heading to the training yard, to practice my archery.”

“ Of course princess, I am well aware of the way but please do lead us at your own pace” ser Devin said with a smile

“Of course,” Maelora smiled as they headed down to the training yard and she found her quiver and bow as the target was set up for her.

Ser Devin stood close to her, but was sure to leave a comfortable space between them as he watched her training

She practiced hitting the targets, having pretty good aim. She wasn’t as skilled as knight, but she could hold her own.

“ Your skills rival my own, archery happens too be one of my weaker skills” ser Devin noted with a small smile

“Thank you, and it takes a lot of practice,” she chuckled. “Although you’re a magnificent swordsman,” she praised.

“ I do pride myself on that yes” chuckled Devin, going forward to remove the arrows from the target for her

“Thank you, Ser Devin,” she smiled as she put them back into her quiver.

“ Princess” he nodded and stood back again, just admiring her personal ability to wield the bow and arrow silently

“There is a tourney coming up for my youngest sister’s nameday, are you planning to participate?” She asked him curiously.

“ i suppose if it is expected of me to participate in the tournament I will do so” answered ser Devin with a small smile

“It’s your choice, you can opt out considering you’re my personal guard now. However it would be a shame to not see you fight,” Mae grinned.

“ well I would not be well advised if told to let it be a shame to you, so I shall compete”

“Wonderful,” Mae beamed. “I can’t wait to watch and give you my favor to win of course.”

“ I would be so grateful” ser Devin bowed his head down with a small smile

“Lovely,” she said and the two finished up in the training yard before walking through the gardens.

“ it’s quite a lovely day” noted Ser Devin, looking at his boots a moment as they walked through

“It is indeed, we’ve been blessed with a long summer, although I heard winter is coming, but eventually the Starks would be right about that,” she chuckled.

Devin raised a brow and chuckled softly “ Forgive me but I haven’t the slightest clue what you speak about, perhaps it is something far above me” he teased

“ Perhaps then is it a statement about the inevitable?” Devin suggested with a small smile “ you never know”

“Most likely, yes,” Mae smiled. “The Starks are among the first of men, perhaps they know things we do not.”

“ Speaking in riddles is quite interesting” Devin noted “ Perhaps they do, there are similar legends amongst your own house”

“That’s very true, the song of ice and fire and the ones who are dreamers oft spoke in riddles,” Mae smiled. “Everything has to be so mysterious,” she teased.

“ I prefer to be straightforward, mystery leads to miscommunication and assumptions, those which lead to unnecessary conflict”

Maelor a let out a soft laugh and nodded her head. “You’re entirely correct and I can appreciate that. In politics and ruling the realm far too much could simply be avoided if one were direct.”

“Alas formalities are truly the main perpetrators of miscommunication” murmured Devin with a small sigh “ But that is simply not my issue to speak upon”

“ Knowing what I have heard of you in passing that does not surprising” murmured Devin. “ Perhaps you’ll make great changes”

“I suppose, my brother will wear the crown, but he’s smart and does listen to my opinions and always wishes for changes so,” Maelora smiled with a soft shrug.

“ You maintain far more power then you think you do” whispered Devin with a small smile “ even beyond what you may think”

Maelora gave him a sly smile. “Do I now? Perhaps you’re right. It’s a shame succession goes to the first born male, otherwise that would be wearing the crown when the time came.”

“ Are you the older twin?” Devin asked curiously, keeping a calm face with a small shrug “ and I would assume you do, most don’t know the extent of power you would technically have”

“I am, I came out first, alas Rhaegar is still the eldest male child,” Maelora smiled. “Still…seems the realm still wants a King to sit the throne and not a queen.”

“ Perhaps it is a personal skill but I tend to be able to identify an older sibling” chuckled the knight “ alas, there is little to be done with the opinions of the public”

“ I can see a calm and peaceful reign in your generation of ruling” Devin said calmly “ the only thing one can truly ask for is peace”

“Exactly, hmmm he would be my great great grand sire, but Viserys the first was known as Viserys the peaceful, which I think is a remarkable title as opposed to Maegor the cruel,” she teased.

“ I foresee your brother having a similar title” Devin grinned and gave a small shrug “ though I am no seer”
