stardew valley has one nonbinary character who isn't even human (fairytale dwarf) and is locked away in a cave and never comes outside to talk to anyone else. and it doesn't let you be nonbinary. I think you can at least wear whatever clothes? so that's nice at least, if that's the case.

fields of mistria gives you one base character model and lets you have any pronouns and clothes, which is way better for letting you be nonbinary than stardew, BUT it doesn't have a single nonbinary npc character in a cast of 32 (34 if we're including 2 unreleased ones which are. allegedly also not nonbinary)

I really, genuinely, appreciate the step forward that npc studio has given us, but it still feels a liiittle bit. performative? like you're paying lip service, and then when you hit "good enough" to get queer people to get excited about the lack of gender-locked customisation, you go "well, that's enough effort" and conveniently forget about nonbinary people for the rest of forever.

and while every canon npc couple is straight in stardew, you get some hints of characters being bi in mistria (such as the in-universe dnd game where the guys and girls are all said to have dated a girl in the game. also everything with juniper and valen) but that just makes the lack of trans and nonbinary characters stand out even more imo? in stardew queerness feels a bit like an afterthought, so the lack of it doesn't stand out as much. in mistria, we have intentional inclusion of certain types of queerness, which makes the exclusion of other types feel more intentional as well.

anyway. i hope we'll get at least one nonbinary npc before the end of development. even if they're non-romancable, even if they're only added after early access is over. even if they're a goddamn nonhuman and/or locked away from all the other characters, like stardew's dwarf. please. something? anything? stardew, you can always add a new character too! it's not too late...!!

but, just.... in general, I wanna see more non-player characters that are even slightly like me. and so far, it feels like only toby fox is delivering on that, at least that I've seen.

I swear, every time I see a post that pits men and women against each other, it just utterly proves a complete refusal to acknowledge multigender people.

Like, if someone is both a man and a woman, do they experience actual misogyny or "misdirected" misogyny? Are they a man and therefore shouldn't speak over women about misogyny, or are they a woman and the man part of their identity can be excused while talking about their experiences with misogyny? Quickly now, decide which part of their identity takes precedence and erases the other side! Oooor are you going to base your perception of their circumstances on an individual basis, depending on their genitals/their appearance/whether you think they're actually trans or just faking for attention? (gee, where have I heard that one before?)

Everyone consider multigender people in their trans activism and fight back against transmedicalism NOW by refusing to uphold the arbitrary man/woman binary. If you can't fit multigender people into your theory, your theory is shit and you're no better than a garden variety transphobe.

people complaining about the increased shiny rates in newer gens tick me off a bit tbh

because like. I got the shiny charm in Sun and chained battles to 100, and even bred with a foreign ditto and hatched at least 100 eggs, probably more, and yet I still didn't get a shiny Fomantis before my 3DS analogue stick broke!!! I've finished W2 and X as well, and my only shiny was the guaranteed Dratini!!! Even with the increased rates in Scarlet I've yet to even see a single shiny…!!!! (yes I skipped SwSh lmao)

People complaining about how it's easier now should be sent to an alternate universe where despite all their efforts they never find a shiny, and THEN they can see how they feel about it. Not everyone has the time/patience/resources to shiny hunt even one pokemon, yet alone multiple (I say, gesturing at my now-broken 3DS, and also only being able to own one game per gen), and not everyone is lucky like my friend who has a streak of randomly finding at least 1 shiny pokemon a year.

MY hot take is that you should be able to guarantee a shiny after enough work (even if it's something really big like, hatching 500 eggs or chaining 300 battles or something. idk i haven't done it in a while so I don't remember what's considered "big"). I feel like getting one through hard work would make it just as rewarding, if not moreso, than some extreme low chance gamble that statistically, you might never achieve, with bad enough rng.

The thrill was interesting and fine back in the day, but now shiny pokemon are so well-established that it isn't really "special", so much as it is a nice treat, a fun little bonus. one that some people can severely miss out on, at no fault of their own. and I will remind you that these are games for children, and they are going to take missing out a lot harder than adults.

But, you know. maybe I just wasn't trying hard enough or something. Alright, lemme at the slot machine again, this time I'll get it for sure.

the unseen woes of finally getting out of the survival mode you were living through for years, and living in complete safety and happiness and comfort for a year or two; now that you are being forced to step out of that comfort zone again, your body seems to treat every minor inconvenience like the end times

i used to wake up super early and then travel on public transport for 2 hours to get to school all the time, why does the thought of potentially doing so once again now give me intense dread???

it's like all my resilience was the result of me constantly clenching my muscles, but now that I've been able to rest, my muscles are back to square 1 strength and I can't handle the same shit I used to

then again I used to be constantly suicidal so maybe it's a good thing I'm not willing to go back to that. but still. feels bad man. feels like I'm weak and making excuses because practically everyone else has it so much harder than me, so it feels pathetic for me to be complaining about things that are comparatively so easy. this is what years of struggling with undiagnosed audhd do to a person i guess. it feels bad to admit that i really am disabled and do need extra support

okay so after another week of working has passed I can confirm that it gets less physically painful the more you do it. as long as I don't have to do more than like 3-4 hours at a time, with a day's break in between, I'm lowkey chilling tbh

now my issue is wondering how people get ready for work within an hour of waking up without breakfast making them feel sick. because I need to eat to have enough energy to work but I need to be careful about what I eat or else I'm going to end up feeling like I can't breathe, apparently. i straight-up need a battle plan for this shit

Thinking about ChatGPT, and students relying on it to write their essays....

Here's a little story. My highschool grades were all over the place; everywhere from Ds (>50%) to As (>90%).

But, when I did a uni course a couple years back, I finally had an official diagnosis, so I got to use accommodations. I was able to apply for extensions directly with teachers instead of going through a whole Process, and to have more test time (to account for my adhd brain thinking lag). AND separate from that, after I had an emotional breakdown in my first semester, I switched to doing 1 class less per semester than everyone else…

...and I got entirely Distinctions (>70%) and High Distinctions (>80%). for a LEGAL STUDIES degree no less; that stuff isn't easy.

I wasn't stupid. I am pretty smart, and I can learn things pretty quickly... if I have the brainpower to. And to HAVE that necessary brainpower, I just needed to be allowed to go to school 2-3 times a week instead of 5, and focus on learning 3 courses at a time instead of 5-6. Also, having only about 15 people in each class instead of 20-25.

When I had that breakdown in my first semester, I was feeling suicidal, like I had been all throughout my 6 years of highschool before I got diagnosed with autism/adhd. After switching to one less class a semester, though... my suicidal feelings ended up disappearing entirely, because I was no longer under constant, heavy stress.

I don't think students need ChatGPT like they think they do. I think they DO genuinely need more support than they're getting, though. They need more time, and a smaller workload. It's possible! I know it's possible, because they managed to make the time to let me do those things!! But I didn't get diagnosed until 18, and I have plenty of friends finding out that they're autistic/adhd well into adulthood. And I wouldn't be allowed to access those things without that diagnosis. And looking at America right now, it seems like getting an official diagnosis... isn't really an option for. most people.

I would not be surprised if a lot of people are only turning to ChatGPT because they feel like they physically don't have enough time to complete the work otherwise. And, to be honest, most of them probably don't have as much time as they need.

Our modern society pushes overwork so much because they're obsessed with trying to cut costs in any way possible, and I hate it so much. We could have something great if we just let people take their time, if we gave people the opportunity to rest more often. But, we don't, and so... people grasp at any small opportunities they can find to let themselves rest.

And when their options are "cheat and get away with it now, unlocking more opportunities, even at the cost of consequences down the line" or "don't cheat, be unable to keep up (despite the fact that you feel like you should be able to keep up if you just had more time), and then completely fall behind and be blocked off from future opportunities" then... can we really put the blame entirely on them for trying to cheat and steamroll their way through a system that's unfair to begin with?

If we want to reduce ChatGPT usage, we need to stop acting like "lazy" students are the primary issue. Because when I was in highschool, I didn't have ChatGPT, but I also didn't have enough support, so I just... didn't do my work, a lot of the time. Because I physically could not. Because the constant stress, and subsequent clinical depression and anxiety, caused my brain to develop such heavy brain fog that doing my schoolwork was a nightmare for me.

People have always cheated. We need to give them less reason to need to cheat. More time, more support. Actually teach them the material, even if they need one-on-one support. And yes, that means paying teachers more, hiring more teachers, giving more people incentive to BECOME teachers, and not be put off by the stressful working conditions of having to deal with rowdy teenagers so frequently, and doing so much work for so little pay.

ChatGPT usage is a symptom of a larger problem, it is not the problem itself.

we'll only achieve true trans liberation if we strip sex and gender of any extant meaning. anybody should be able to have any gender and it should have no actual bearing on anything external. that is the ideal that we should be striving towards

include nonbinary people and intersex people in your trans activism NOW, dismantle the "requirements" for gender in your head, or you'll be forever going in a goddamned circle of finding which trans person isn't "trans enough" to be who they say they are. butch trans women and feminine trans men and other GNC trans people will be the first on the chopping block behind nonbinary and intersex people. we're already seeing a rise in tensions and seeing all of these people feeling unsafe within their own community.

do better. stop licking a patriarchal, transphobic, exorsexist and intersexist society's boots by insisting that there's any measurable difference between men and women beyond internal identity. there is not. I'm so serious. transmeds are a scourge on the trans community.

for the last goddamn time, people are people, stop arbitrarily grouping them and then treating them differently because of said arbitrary grouping!!!

remember when it was considered a social faux pas within queer circles to ask people what genitals they have? i remember that. we should bring that back, I think.

we should also combine it with not assuming, too. I've met trans people irl who pass so well that when I knew (from being told) that they were trans, but I didn't know their pronouns, I was 50/50 that they might be trans in a different direction than they actually were.

I think the only information you need to know about a person is their pronouns and gender, and you should take that as gospel, and any further information they decide to share with you is a privilege, and a sign of trust that you would do well not to squander by doubting the validity of their identity
