MEATWADS

When my son was an infant I couldn’t get over his little hands so tiny so strong perfect pudgy meatwads I called them his grandmother was not amused

they always made such a peculiar smack against my chest as he latched on to my breast or on the hardwood as he struggled to figure out this crawling thing

now his little meatwads have grown and thinned like the rest of him still so small but it’s undeniable he’s got his dad’s hands and they won’t be little for long

PEEK-A-BOO

this morning after breakfast I tried to play peekaboo with my son I crawled under the table and bounced out with a smile and a PEEK usually this would be met with giggles and squeals and today he growled at me ok maybe later

so I tried again later in the midst of fort-building a daily favorite I nestled in behind the sofa and then popped PEEK “nuh uh” wow ok not in the mood I see maybe later

later after we shared a cookie and some giggles and a little Pete the Cat I tried one more time crouching in wait for that perfect moment peeking from around the corner as he ran squealing down the hall “BOO” “no” lol I guess not today then

so I decided to go back to playing with the sun instead it seemed far more entertained by my antics and even played along bobbing and weaving between the branches and clouds

TWO

Squish and I have been working on numbers lately both the concept and the counting

we made our most massive breakthrough to date with peanut butter crackers (of course a leap of this scale would have to be food motivated he is my kid after all)

“Would you like more peanut butter crackers?” “Yes” “How many?” silence and his head cocks to the side like a confused puppy

I hold up my hand and use my fingers “Do you want one?” one finger up “Or two?” two fingers up and he excitedly interjects “two” while holding up all 5 fingers stretched widely for added emphasis eyes twinkling while grinning ear to ear and he starts to giggle

just an inkling of understanding but enough for today so we celebrated “two” with a high five and two more peanut butter crackers

BOOTS

When he picked up all the shoes he could find including my boots and dropped them at my feet on the living room floor I was pretty sure it meant he wanted to go outside

I would have much preferred staying in admiring how they shone In pools of sun on the floor

SIRENS

I currently hear sirens coming from the next room used to be that would cause concern ha no longer now simply the sound of a content though over-tired toddler who has decided to play through sleepy-eyes with his little plastic fire truck whose batteries are losing steam almost as quickly as he is

The red and white lights flicker off momentarily while the speaker takes all the available power nee-naw nee-naw

he might not be napping that would be better that’s always the hope really but if it’s not in the cards today at least he’s keeping himself amused nee-naw nee-naw so that I can get a little time to myself
