My young son has just turned 3 and is entranced by thatgamecompany's Journey. Not a bad "first game".

Another awesome post from the ever-impressive Jeff Atwood.
Fantastic concept art for Guild Wars: Nightfall, by Jaime Jones. The entire thread is pure gold.
I look forward to playing CCGs with my son. I don't know if I'd go this far, however.
An excellent rant by Braid creator Jonathan Blow.
The Karac Peninsula, the setting for my Dungeons & Dragons game at work. Made using the brilliant Hexographer and Photoshop.
The Silken Bridge
I'm running a Dungeons & Dragons game for a group of newbie players at work, and figured that their first ever time through should involve a pub and a bearded old man who would send them on quests. So I needed to invent a pub.
The Silken Bridge is not the largest tavern in the city-slum of Providence, nor the cleanest. It doesn’t boast the priciest drinks, nor does it lay claim to be the favourite watering hole of any sung hero. Any weary adventurers looking to rest their bones between jobs would have a task getting to sleep; as the Bridge is, well, made out of a giant wooden bridge between the towering walls of Providence’s only canal, it plays host to foot- and mounted traffic nearly 24 hours of the day.
As the sun sets, then, on a scorching, late-summer day, and the night-time smells of incense and woodsmoke permeate the air, only one thing draws the crowds: the business of exploring and plundering Lost Endul. The Silken Bridge is the adopted home of those brave or foolish enough to venture across the border in search of knowledge, treasure and glory, and there is no better place to find a group of like-minded individuals, score a sponsor, or charter a ship to travel the treacherous waterways of the once-great empire.
Seated comfortably around one of the larger tables in the tavern’s common-room, you cast your gaze around, taking in the loud but otherwise remarkably peaceful scene. While fights can and do break out, over gold, contracts, promises broken or deliveries failed, such disturbances are rare.
Because fights are bad for business.
Stunning Guild Wars 2 concept art from the always-amazing Daniel Dociu.
